The Zone finally goes all sports

HHH announces this morning this is his last week on the Zone, as they are going all-sports beginning next week.

It was good to "borrow" him from WNOX for awhile. And while I sometimes enjoyed his show, even he admitted that when you're building a brand, in this case a local sports station, it's hard to do so with one piece out of place. Many don't remember that when the Zone signed on the air it was a talk station that including sports, and HHH was the final holdover from that day. The Zone will be stronger in the long run with a consistent brand.

Too bad Citadel didn't also have an AM here or a third FM where they could build a an entertainment talk station, with Rick and Bubba mornings, HHH middays, etc.

Nothing specific, just sports.

But he also didn't mention he had his Knoxville radio and TV gigs, or his gig with the DIY network (based in Knoxville), to fall back on.

Is it possible HHH could resurface on 1510 WLAC?
______________

Doubt it. 1510 only seems to have the morning drive slot open, and HHH is doing his WNOX show then, 5:30 - 10 ET.

Re: The Zone Programming

What will be the new format for the Zone? Will they use current employees like Matt Kuehn, John Merrick, Jay Retread, Darren McFarland or will they reach out and bring in Rudy Kalis, Hope Hines or Paul Jones? There are other rumors that some of the WNSR talent may move over. Greg Pogue, David Boclair, Bill King and Greg Ruff are names that continue to surface. You could see Greg Pogue team with David Boclair or Greg Ruff. You could see Bill King rejoin with David Climer and Bubba Miller. There are numerous possibilties that have been running wild around town the last two weeks.

I wish the Zone would tweak the morning show and lessen the role of Frank Wycheck except during the football season. They need to get Mark Howard fixed or lessen his role.
______________

Re: The Zone Programming

Oh man, I hope they don't put on Jay "Romper Room" Walker and Matt "Mushmouth" Kuene. They have such a high potential to put something good there, but 104 has always made terrible programming decisions. I'm prepared for another one in this case.

I really like the all sports format 104.5 is going to, but the programming geniuses down there keep giving me reasons not to listen.
______________

ZONE NOT ALL-SPORTS

WGFX still isn't all sports. They have more than one NON-sports talk show on the weekends. They can't boast all-sports format with that programming on.

I am all for filling Triple H with sports. WGFX has been a odd car wreck with its programming. Everything from being sports and the political talk and then Jim Rome and all the mix. They also had the odd situation in the evening where they had a live talk show som e nights and then a national talk show on other nights. Very odd. This solves one problem, but many others remain.
______________

Who cares that they have a couple of "home" shows and "outdoors" shows on the weekends? Even with Under the Roof coming over from 99.7 to add to the mix. They play to the same target market. What's going on M-F is what qualifies a station as all anything, anyway.

The "car wreck" came about because when the Zone first aired, they were not a sports station but a talk station that carried a good deal of sports. As fans began asking them for a sports station, they slowly evolved, leaving them with an odd programming mix.

If they put Fox Sports in for HHH or a replay hour of Rome, I'll lead the way in trying to get HHH back on the air.
Edited by jetfli on 08/03/05 11:57 AM.

I doubt it, but watch the 9-11 slot goes to Joe Williams, who just wrapped up Bud Select Zone last week. I wonder if the termination of both shows is linked, or just a coincidence.
______________

Won't happen. The 9-11 a.m. shift would conflict with Joe's day job. The night show drop is more than a coincidence, though, supposedly they're moving "resources" from that spot to middays. The Zone opens up Fall with a heavy rotation of specialty shows, then live games, in early evening. Makes having a regular evening show difficult. Supposedly the BUD Zone would never have occurred if there had been a hockey season this past year. The shame comes in defaulting to Fox any evening.
