The Zone launched one year ago today

Yeah yeah, no one else cares. But it was the only station that I would ever just "leave on". I never leave on a station now - I always flip around, between FM and Sirius and CD and AUX. The Zone - I could leave that on for some reason. I'd write something here - I remember writing about how they played the particularly censored version of Everlast's "What it's Like" and a few weeks later they had a less censored version on, and I've got to think they read my post. Someone else wrote about how they had a weird version of Republica's "Ready To Go" and then later on they had that changed too. Someone over there gave a damn, at least for a little while.

The only reason why I run "The Dump" now is because COX screwed up. RIP.

If anyone is interested, I have unscoped recordings of at least the last 12 hours of The Zone. I'm looking for unscoped KRBE "Roxy" live shows from the late 90's. I used to tune in with RealPlayer - anyone remember when they would broadcast with RealAudio? Only station that did that in Houston.

Hey Mike, I'm still taking "The Zone" flip pretty hard. It was the only station I streamed via my phone, and would never change. That was "my" station, and not only did COX take it away, but they didn't even have the decency to push it to 106-9HD2, or keep "Pat FM." I remember driving into Houston in January of this year and hearing it for the first time---I was blown away. There isn't another station like that in the US.

Here are 10 songs I heard played consecutively (with one commercial break) on The Zone:

New Order---Regret
Primitive Radio Gods---Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand
The Church---Under the Milky Way
Toad the Wet Sprocket---All I Want
Porno For Pyros---Pets
The Rentals---Friends of P
Mighty Joe Plum---Live Through This (Fifteen Stories)
Splendor---Whatever
Trapt---Echo
Duran Duran---Ordinary World

Wow. I personally like most of those songs you just listed individually. But playing them together, consecutively? That's a recipe for a 1-share (or worse).

@MikeRichardson I've got LOTS of complete recordings of KRBE live at the Roxy with Mark D. I know I've said it here many times.. and have yet to produce. I apologize its so hard for me to follow through with alot.. I have a site where I started posting my recordings. But.. with my schedule.. running a restaurant.. its tough. On top of that my Roxy is on VHS tapes and I'm without a Hi-Fi 4 head stereo VCR to make digital recordings on my laptop

rageradio, I've got a Samsung unit here, it's a 4 head HiFi VCR and DVD Recorder combo (personally verified HiFi capability). Easiest way to rip tapes is to dub them over to DVDs and then just rip the DVDs.

I remember streaming The Zone on my phone too. They had only a rather marginal quality stream, 64 kbps MP3. They had a dogdy signal in Meyerland too, back when they launched, stereo was pretty spotty. I listened anyway. To a degree, their content trumped their signal deficiencies, but it was almost guaranteed that if I was in Houston, I'd probably be listening to 106.9.

After they killed it - that's when I ripped out my factory GM Radio in favor of a unit that could handle Sirius and AUX. And I'm not hearing any commercials on Sirius or AUX. I still remember when the Zone's main advertiser was "ACE Cash Advance".

I liked 'The Zone' but i enjoy KHJK more. I like discovering new artist/music and hearing old forgotten favorites on the same station.

KHJK is pretty good, but I feel like it is a parting gift after losing "The Zone." I'm glad to see KHJK is simulcasting on KRBEHD2.

If we could get "Pat FM" back on 106-9HD2, I would feel a lot better about things.

I think The Zone was on the verge of debuting new music right before it was cut down. I remember a post to their Facebook page regarding the new Coldplay album.

Zone was killed two years ago today.

Of course, now we've lost KHJK.

I basically listen to a station on my radio called "AUX" and sometimes 92.1 these days.

That's for reminding me how sad Houston radio could be be bumping this topic.

I honestly wish for an album oriented rock station for this market. It will have to happen someday, I bet the next format change will be to AOR. I really hope whoever runs that pipes in Sixx Sense.

I do miss KHJK. :'( It was the perfect soundtrack while sitting on the beach in Galveston.
I miss KHJK as well. The closest station that is somewhat similar to KHJK that still exists, is Mix 96-5.
