Does anyone know how long Entercomm will let The End run on fumes?

I thought KEXP was simulacasting on that channel.

That just about says it all.
Not even on the radar of anybody even caring to comment.

Time to put a fork in it. Or maybe reinvent the wheel and make it something worth
listening to(again), But probably not.

I can't imagine things will remain the same there much longer....either a format flip or a complete overhaul. Here's the problem. First off the music tends to lean towards the younger alt rock listener and those people are more apt to find other ways to get their music (iPods, Myspace band pages etc.) That way they can hear their favorite new bands instantly, without sitting through all the banter and commercials on air. There is no music in the morning and their afternoon show averages 6-7 songs an hour. At 3-4 minutes long, you are looking at 18-28 minutes of music per hour and more than a half hour of commercials and bs from the show hosts. Young people want to hear music and they are not going to sit around for hours hoping to hear some of their favorite songs.

So if you are committed to chasing after those teens, then the station needs to be music intensive throughout the day. If they are committed to their shows, then they need to maybe lean more classic alt and drop all the new stuff. The older demo is more likely to sit and listen to the radio as opposed to finding alternate means, but they have to enjoy all the content that the station offers. That means talent they can relate to and a music library that brings back memories. Kids care about bands like Artic Monkeys, Silversun Pickups, Biffy Clyro etc. But they are going elsewhere to listen to this new music, so why even bother playing them?

So without rambling on, it's simple. Drop all your talk shows and go music intensive or skew older and build a library and find talent that meshes well with that older music. If not, I just don't see how this station can survive.

Understood. Thank you for the enlightenment. As a listener, I guess what you're saying is they'll prolly make no personality changes and let laslo keep running it into the ground under the guise of 'entertainment'. Any suggestions of where I can go after Thee End has turned the screws on 'the faithful' like myself for the last, God knows how many years. Time to quit hoping for a change, huh? Guess I'll start rocking the ipod & maybe
investigate satellite now :( It's crystal clear, the station really doesn't matter to anyone, young or old. Sad.

I always love this argument. If this is true, then explain to me why KUBE continues to be a top five station and HUGE numbers with exactly the people you are talking about. I happen to know the answer but I'll let this get kicked around a bit more because I have to run right now.

Well a couple reasons seem to come to mind. First off, the music heard on KUBE is probably as popular with white kids as it is with minorities. The END doesn't have that same luxury. Secondly, in alot of cases, it comes down to money. Unfortunately, alot of minorities simply do not have the means to buy iPods or have a fancy computer at home that they can use to download mp3's. Don't get me wrong, alot do, but their is a very large percentage of folks that whose family just can't afford to get them this new technology. If you think I'm full of it, spend a day on a Metro bus and count the number of minority kids listening to a walkman or a portable CD player that sells for 10 bucks these days.

Those are my thoughts. But since you already know the answer, why don't you fill us in.

There's also the fact that KUBE plays HUGE mainstream hit music from the likes of Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys etc. while The End does not.

Maybe Entercom ought to give this station back to the same folks who ran it when it was KRAB! It can't do that much worse at this point......

I think if there's any hope for The End, they need to take it back to the way it was. I don't mean just playing music from the 90's, I am talking about jocks. A music intensive morning show - with MARCO COLLINS! Too bad they can't bring back Jennifer White for middays....or maybe they can? Dick Rossetti in the afternoon, and keep harms at night. Little talk, lots of music. I think that's the only way they will survive. All of those people are incredible alternative radio jocks.

I loved The End, and I am definately in their target demo, but there's no way it's getting programmed back into my car stereo if Lazlo is still there. He and his show bring nothing but brainless banter to what was (and still could be) a legendary alternative MUSIC radio station.

OK!! this is what I'm talkin' about!!
If the ill advised management at Entercomm had any sense of regard for what listeners want, they would
put Rosetti, they would put Marco back on the air, relaunch the thing and stick with what made the station
notable in the first place : music, music, music. How unstoppable would a line-up that included Andy Harms,Rosetti & Collins?
Its would be like a personality all star KZOK worthy lineup of alternative or new music or whatever.
If Marco is back in town, we know where Harms is, is Rosetti still around?, didn't he used to say on air that his
wife is a doctor or something? if so, he's probably still in the area code.

It's better I stay in a fantasyworld. This would never occur would it?
Thats why radio sucks nowadays, they don't do anything to make you want to listen :( :( :(

Seems that the END could return to the music that made it great when I listened in the early 90's. Big focus on Gen-X music from Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Beck mixed with some like-sounding new music. Forget the talk show in the morning and personality show in the afternoon in favor of lots of music and personalities that connect, but don't talk alot. KMTT is for 45-65 year olds, this would appeal 25-44. It would be my station of choice. Right now there is no where to go to hear music for men 25-44 in morning drive in Seattle. Lots of older stuff from KBSG and KJR. KZOK, KISW, KNDD are wall to wall talk. Seems this would be a perfect opening for KNDD.

The END is near. If Funkey Monkey moves into position on 104.5, KIRO will simulcast on 107.7.

DJDAN,

I think we are on the same page and I am shocked that it is taking Entercom this long to figure this out. As far as talents brought up on this thread, as far as I'm concerned, Jennifer White can stay in San Diego. She is a lousy jock. If you want a female midday girl that has some experience back when the End was actually good, call up Kim Monroe. And while he might know his music, Harms is flat out terrible. Ask his boss what he thinks about Harms. Word has it Lazlo wanted to move Dick to nights when he and his wife took over PM drive, tossing Harms out the door. Dick passed on the offer because he didn't want to see his friend get canned.

Look if the end ever wakes up and finally goes after an older demo, Marco & Dic Rosetti make sense. And what about Bill Reid? Is he still on the air here in Seattle? These are guys that know their music and are entertaining in the short time they crack the mic. A much better fit than the current on air lineup.

If by "near" you mean three to five years - then your time frame would be accurate.

As for KIRO on 107.7 - Bonneville owns KIRO and Entercom owns The End. Hmmm...maybe Bonneville strikes up a TBA with ETM?

The END is near! Seattle needs a full market hispanic station and one that is locally programmed for my hispanic sisters. This audience demo is exploding in Seattle.
Mamma says adios to THE END and buenos dias la ya ya Super Z todos los dias durante nuestros programas en vivo y podrás elegir lo que a ti te gusta escuchar. ya ya

Entercom is still the licensee for both KIRO-AM and KNDD right now. KIRO is currently operated by Bonneville through a Local Mangement Agreement with purchase later on in the year or in 2008. But Mr. Pro, you may be correct when you say Bonneville would need to give consent to Entercom to run the simulacast on 107.7, as Bonneville is the operator of KIRO.

Think about it folks. Say you're an alternative fan (and you actually work). Assume it's 9 to 5. You go into work in the morning, and you don't hear any music....none at all, it's wall-to-wall Carolla. On the way home, you got the Lazlo thing going on. While they do play about six songs an hour, most of them are the recurrents or tired gold that's been around for awhile.

And if you're an alternative fan, you try KISW, but they don't play music in the morning, and play even fewer songs in the afternoon than Lazlo.

No wonder there are so many displaced alternative fans...they have nowhere to go!
