Theme weekends...

My wife had a few friends over last night and they started discussing radio stations which was a first for me to hear woman talk about this subject. A woman brought up that the Zone was doing a party songs weekend and she heard Bon Jovi, Pat Benetar and U2 on her way over along with the regular upbeat songs they play and was going to listen all weekend. How come this isn’t something that stations in the market do more of? I am personally a big fan of 98 rocks weekend features where they get away from the typical songs for an hour or two but I really haven’t seen many full weekend music themes. Wouldn’t this help to build TSL? Is it just the programming people don’t want to put the effort in for just weekend numbers?
 
I suppose, with radio-narrowcasting the way it is, there is not
much latitude to have music-theme weekends...good question...

At least during KHYL's "Cool 101.1" years, we had some nice
theme weekends (Beatles, "Million Dollar," One-hit Wonders, a.o),
yet kept within the regular format...

I liked KZZO's "Party Songs" weekend, too, although it took
some adjustment to hear Steppenwolf and AC/DC, mixed with
Finger Eleven and Sara Bareilles... ;D

At the Eagle, we've put on theme shows on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Sunday one (Eagle Easy) comes from the idea of what KFOG has been doing for decades (Acoustic Sunrise). Both are excellent. As far as TSL on a weekend, you must be joking. Once M-F comes around it's everyone back to their CD's and iPod's.
 
Used to be fun when we had airstaffs and maybe some prizes to blow out.
Remember when we had those ??? :mad:

It was a nice diversion, wasn't it. One of my old bosses, Chris Kidd, was really into them when I worked for him in SLT. We did em a bunch at Y92 too. It's nice to bust loose from the format once in a while.

Isnt the greatest TSL during the work week, when people are either driving to work, at work, or home from work? CD's and iPods seem to be more for leisure listening and that would take place more on the weekend.

Theme weekend's are a great programming muscle to flex
