There goes KHFI

They had been avoiding hip-hop and R&B for the most part ... a few songs here or there. Well, within the last week or so, they've really ramped things up. It's now every other song ... or very close. Weak, guys. Very weak.

I bet they sound like 106.1 KISS FM in Dallas now.
Sadly, KRBE plays that krap too.

Isnt that what all top 40 stations play? mixer of top 40 & Hiphop. Personally I think they need to add club/dance to the playlist instead of hiphop, hiphop is what r&b stations are for.

Yeah, I thought these type of stations generally mix some hip hop music in. Are they doing more of that now?? Possibly wanting to compete more heavily with KXBT and KDHT??

Everytime I hear 50Cent on KRBE, it makes my stomach ache inside. That krap belongs on a R&B or Urban formatted station. Top 40 is not what it used to be.

Top 40 is just that...the top 40 records being played...no matter what...
when I was working in Top40 AM radio in the 70s, we would go from some heavy R&B/Soul song to The Kendalls (Heaven's just a sin away) to disco (Bee Gees) to AC style (Elton John)...

the problem is that the music has skewed because young white kids listen to the crap out there nowadays.....and radio is just following what THEY are listening to...I dont like it anymore than you do....but thats the way it is...

Agreed... its what is mainstream at the moment. Hip hop will never go away, but like all forms of popular music, it will evolve, and I think you'll see mainstream top 40 shift away from it within the next couple of years. Of course it'll be back!

I like to see you haters cry! Like the saying goes, don't hate the player, hate the game....

The ratings will be the ultimate judge. If they wanted to add hip-hop and R&B, the time was when The Beat first signed off ... not now, when there are two stations devoted to that format full-time. This reeks of a decision made by the new PD. The old one knew better. KHFI has been fairly steady lately. We'll see what happens now ...

The real problem is the PD change. Tommy Austin had the station sounding good and in a good position to compete in the market. Now, Jay Shannon is back. Unfortunately he was one of the reasons that Tommy had to "fix" the station. Jay is a little two reactionary. He seems to think that just because a high rated station across town is playing hip-hop that his station needs to also. Bottom line is...it doesn't. Yes, Top 40 means playing whatever the top 40 songs are, but its also figuring out the frequency you play the songs and what else (older hits, future hits, pop vs r&b vs Hip-hop) to mix in.

Funny how all react to Jay. When he was in Lubbock, KZII was consistently #1 or #2 throughout his tenure. Since he's left, KZII has basically gone to hell. Maybe he should go back to Lubbock. I'd like to have him here.

KHFI's music mix, while a bit eclectic at times, used to have personality and be a great mix of the hits WITHOUT becoming a clone of many of the other CHR's across the country. Looking at their playlist now, that's been flushed down the toilet. I have a feeling that the change in leadership has to do with this...

And on another note, KHFI MD/Late Nights Deidre Gott is featured this week under All Access' "10 Questions With..."

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck.....well, you get what I mean. Some PD's seem to have their ultimate job or ultimate city where they do great and just can't do it elsewhere. Seems like everything he's done since then hasn't really worked....

KHFI is one of my favorite radio stations. I find it to be
a brilliantely programmed and executed radio station. However,
with that said i have noticed the station take on a decidedly
rythmic lean the last month or so. What makes KHFI great is
it's balance.
