There Just Might Be Some Hope For Oldies.....................................

If public pressure can convince CC to put liberal talk back on the air after they dropped it, maybe there's hope for Oldies. There's GOTTA be more Oldies listeners than liberal talk listeners. Let's all find a CC station that dropped Oldies and set up picket lines!

From the Wisconsin board:

MADISON, Wisc. – December 22, 2006 – Clear Channel Radio-Madison today announced that the progressive talk format on WXXM FM, The MIC 92.1 will continue into 2007. The decision reverses an earlier announcement that the station would switch to local sports programming on that date..

'We are overwhelmed by the recent outpouring of support for our Progressive Talk format from the public, some of our community leaders and some dedicated local advertisers," said Jeff Tyler, Vice President/Market Manager of Clear Channel Radio-Madison. "As a result, we have decided not to change the format of WXXMFM, The MIC 92.1 on January 1, 2007. We thank everyone who spoke, called, e-mailed and wrote to us intelligently and actively about keeping progressive talk on Clear Channel Radio in Madison . We deeply appreciate the local business leaders who are pledging their advertising support -- they are playing an enormous role in helping to keep progressive talk on the air in our community.

Re: There Just Might Be Some Hope For Oldies....................................

I hope you are right. There are certain areas of the nation where liberal talk radio would draw a bigger crowd. (Do you think Hillary could have been elected to the Senate from Ohio or Arkansas?) I just think many of us oldies fans have given up and went to XM, although Cincinnati has a great oldies station. Check out www.oldies1160. com .....And remember where this circumstance you site happened; one of the liberal cities in the nation.

Hope For Oldies

If you were right, the "big protest" when CBS-FM flipped to Jack would have produced more than a whimper. In the biggest market in America where Oldies radio started in the early '70s, that "protest" included about 300 people and they were barely heard from again. Oldies stations all over America fell over the past 2 years, less than a handful replaced the incumbents and the people who were the most pissed off were disc jockeys, not radio listeners. Say all you want about the state of radio today, but radio execs are looking for any and every way to generate positive revenue- IF there were gold in them thar hills (Oldies), don't you think corporate radio groups would be ADDING Oldies stations, not evolving them along or changing format? I mean, it really is that simple, folks.

So, I hate to burst your bubble but this had more to do with politics than format preference. Oldies radio's problem (it's ONLY problem) is that it's audience is aging out of the most desirable sales demo.

Period.

That certainly won't happen with liberal talk. Otherwise CC wouldn't have dropped it in the first place!

Hey, Cat, it's a rimshot FM from outside Madison. In the overall scope of radio in America today, the 3kw progressive talk in suburban Madison WI is not causing shockwaves anywhere-except for the die-hards in Madison, WI.

And, by the way, good for them making their voices heard. I guarantee you that if Oldies radio listeners were really THAT passionate about their stations when they flipped, more of them would have been replaced very quickly. That clearly has not happened.
