There were some times that 95x actually sounded good

And that should be what is focused on.

Sorry I keep going back to the Wiki, but the public should read something like this.

WAQX Radio was founded in 1978 by Syracuse University students [[Craig Fox (radio host)|Craig Fox]], Ted Utz and their PD, Ed Levine.
Levine took 95x and competed with 94 Rock (Classic Rock) and was easily beat in the ratings every hour and every book. You almost felt sorry for the staff because Levine was also known as the "Worst PD to work for in history". Meaning that he was like a bad general that no one could get behind and this reflected on the air. The music selection was bad and no one seemed happy. Levine has a series of broadcast facilities to this day that are operated the same way. To the listener, the reason why 95x is still around is in 1983 the large company that bought 94Rock believed that a wider variety format would make more money than the rock format, and flipped it to the listeners dismay. Now all of the Classic Rock listeners were forced to settle for second best and still do to this day.

If the owners of 95x would focus on people that understand the actual history of the station. Then those people they hire could focus on the high points of the stations history. Hard to find the right person.

94 Rock played some classic Rock as it was a part of the (AOR) Album-oriented rock programed by Burkhart/Abrams. but 94 Rock was not a classic rock station . 104.7 WKFM (Kix-FM) was "Syracuse's Original Classic Rock" and that was there slogan. I forget where but online you can find an air check of WFBL Fire14's Last day where it announces " A new Album Rock Station on FM starting tomorrow at WSYR-FM 94 Rock" I think this is the one http://airchexx.com/2005/01/03/archives-hot-hits-wfbl-fire-14-syracuse-1980/

That is true. Kix was the first station to use the phrase "Classic Rock". But the genre was all similar. There was 94 Rock, Sky 101, Kix, and in Rochester it was WMJQ and WCMF. Utica WOUR and Rock 107.
Right???

Classic Rock was a big part of there formats my point is at the time the format was AOR and not Classic Rock . 95X did have a much tighter rock sound with fewer classics and I thought 95X was a good station. I remember having the radio on Kix-Fm one afternoon in 1987-88 and the two DJ's where talking about the new ratings book and how well 95X did compared to Kix saying that 95X was a great station but did not say where the 2 stations where in the ratings just that they where close. I Think you are right if the 94 Rock format was around today it would for sure be Classic rock the only point was that at the time it was (AOR) Album-oriented rock.

Listening to your Great Air Check here ELL383. Loved the Josephs format. It was a bit ahead of its time for Syracuse but went on to work in bigger markets. Haha I just heard a Bob Brown promo. You are more in touch with the older CNY radio history than I am. 95x had a lot of shining moments. One that comes to mind was Thursday Nights at Suburban Park (The night club that is). They built that crowd to what had to be 1000 people through the door every night. When Dave Frisina was on after Stern were good years too. Also the ratings reflected it. 95x should be a Classic Rock or AOR station for sure. It just needs to be done correctly.
If the staff across the hall at "The Rebel" went back to 95x and did a lot of valid, retro stuff. Like updated but similar rollovers to the originals, people would tune in to take them back to the day. If the announcer was able to give a story here and there, the people would come back. Syndicate in the morning is a bad Idea though because of how Howard Stern left and the way that he publicly embarrassed 95x a few days before he left. A talented local PD in the morning could make it good.

I think if 95X & the Rebel switched formats with each other and 95X started to build the format from the ground up with heavy 60's and 70's and have a classic rock music voting on there website for the whole on air playlist so you get sick of a song you select "sick of or overplayed" if you hear a song that's in low rotation you would select "would like to hear played more" the PD could use this as a guide and if the format starts to drop in ratings you could add songs to list but not to the playlist before online testing. just an idea.

Cant do that in Radio. You will muck up things. Besides, it would wind up being another alley way that the listener gets frustrated like the phones.
Simple Talent and an individual is the answer. There aint a lot of it here, but that doesnt mean there isnt any. There are a few of us classy guys out here who remember vividly how Levine was beat in rock radio. 94 Rock had a lot of class. TK99 has a low budget sound. We know that the pay grade in radio is low, but you can still make it sound good. I could do PD and Mornings somewhere for 20 hours a week (Because I have a Good Job) and still beat TK99 I bet. Dave Frisina and one part timer would be all i need. NO BOB and TOM. This is going to be real local, rebel radio with out the bragging "Rebel" moniker. The only way to contact me is email listed in my profile here.
