Thessaloniki, Greece - 8 Local CHRs!!!

If you thought your city was a haven for CHR radio then you'd really get a kick out of Thessaloniki, Greece's second biggest city.
With a staggering 8 CHRs this is truly a city where hit music lives. The 3 leading local CHRs are

Zoo, Star, and Plus can all be heard in cafes, restaurants, bars, and stores all throughout metro Thessaloniki. Three other CHRs that seem to be gaining traction are Athens-based Radio Deejay, Adult friendly Sunshine FM, and Ola FM which plays a 50/50 mix of international and modern Greek Pop hits

The city's also got some great Bright ACs that play a lot of lost 80s and 90s hits alongside recent hits

And if you're into Rock music Thessaloniki definitely has you covered. 106.5 focuses on Hard Rock where 105.5, 89.7, and 100.3 play a lot of Modern Rock. Websites for local Rock stations include

Might as well have a party while you go down the toilet, no? What city in the US is as broke and burned out as anywhere in Greece?

I gotta tell you that Thessaloniki city looked great this past weekend when I was there, and the locals look happy, and remain optimistic. Greeks are warm people, full of life. The Irish are the same way (though in their own unique way).
It's safe to walk around any part of Thessaloniki at any time of the day, which is more than I can say for most US cities, let alone places like Detroit.
In Spain, on the other hand, tension has been building among the unemployed, especially the younger demos. As much as 35% of Spain's 18-34 year olds are currently unemployed, which is why there are massive demonstrations in Barcelona, and especially in Madrid.

Getting back to saradio1's question, there are several US markets where you can pick up 3 CHR/Pop stations (including San Antonio and Reno). Up in Canada in the capital of Ottawa you've got 4 local CHRs.

I love that they use both odd and even-numbered FM frequencies.

You'll find that everywhere in the eastern hemisphere (Europe, Asia, Africa, New Zealand and a few stations in Australia, but most stations there use the American odd-numbered frequency scheme.) In the UK, it's packed SUPER tight with licensed stations alone. They all seem to run in much narrower bandwidths than American FM stations. Add the ubiquitous pirates and you REALLY need an excellently selective FM tuner to pick through the FM dial - ESPECIALLY in the London suburbs. Most local UK FM stations are about a few hundred watts, with a few 1-2,000 watters, the highest powered are usually in the major cities (the BBC FMs in London usually run at 250,000 watts) whereas over in Africa and part of Asia, there are still entire countries with HUGE swaths of territory with absolutely NO local radio service of any kind whatsoever.

In the Western hemisphere, it's far more organized, but getting just about as congested.....

As far as Greece goes, in spite of their economic doldrums, you have to admit CHRles is right about one thing. Greece (as many places around the world) is a VERY civilized place to be....Or at least better than Camden, NJ. They don't fall apart as easily as Americans......
