They preempted that for this?

With the next 2 days of the DNC across all of the Big 3 broadcast nets extending coverage to 2 hours from 9-11 Eastern (hopefully ending in a reasonable time unlike the last 2 nights, wishful thinking perhaps), KPHO (CBS Phoenix) which normally airs the CBS Evening News at 6PM MST will preempt it altogether (not even airing at 5:30 or bumping it to KTVK) opting instead to air Cardinals Game Plan today & 5:30 local news tomorrow. At least with only one hour of primetime scheduled altogether, Western Big 3 affiliates primetime schedules won't be so out-of-whack as they were the last 2 nights.

Not sure if it was scheduled before the Convention or maybe just in the last day or so because of how far overrun the DNC has been, including tonight, but KNXV (ABC Phoenix) took no chances & bumped back Who Wants to be a Millionaire? to 9 MST & scheduled a special newscast from 8-9 likely as a buffer. KPHO (CBS) & KPNX (NBC) goes straight to the one hour of scheduled network programming afterwards. KSAZ (FOX), as they did in the RNC, bumped primetime tonight & tomorrow as well to 11pm after news.

Maybe because it's only the first day of the convention, but KSAZ's showing the Live Now from FOX feed for coverage. Checking just now (8:12 MST) & they've switched to the FOX News feed.
Fox told affiliates they’d provide coverage on an alternate satellite channel.

But at 10 PM Eastern/7 PM Pacific&Arizona time, the alternate channel was still on a color bar slate.

That slate actually aired on KSAZ for a few seconds while they switched to the Live Now feed. (Looks like they didn’t want to return to Fox regular programming only to interrupt it later.)

Fox finally began coverage on that alternate channel at about 7:52 Pac-Az time.

KTVK (IND/Phoenix) will broadcast the final night of the DNC starting coverage after Good Evening Arizona at 7, bumping Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy! to 11PM.

Heads up for the Boston viewers, Wheel will be airing at its regular time tomorrow evening on WSBK replacing the first half-hour of TBBT as the main WBZ channel is airing a special half-hour edition of Patriots All Access.

The real main problem is that my Bell Fibe Op might switch WSBK over to CTV 2 Atlantic to show TBBT in place of Wheel as I've seen that happen before.

The local paper showed "Young Sheldon" and "Ghosts" instead of an extra hour of the convention last night. However, what actually aired on CBS was the convention, as I found out since I record whatever is on at that time as a precaution.

I was counting on this because Walz's speech was supposed to be the highlight. They had speech after speech after speech and even during the slot where I normally record news, it was still going on. Walz didn't start until ten minutes before the news was supposed to be over! I didn't bother to record anything else because obviously the night would be about him. Well, it was, but not him doing his own speech. It was him being praised.

I haven't even gotten to the recordings of most of the other speeches. I do know Kamala's speech ended during the time when news is supposed to air because I checked my recording. I haven't seen much of what happened last night yet.

Noticed this from someone posting on my Discord, WKMG (CBS Orlando) preempted the Arizona Cardinals/Denver Broncos game from 6:30 on to cover the Lake Mary Little League World Series triumph over Chinese Taipei in the championship game. They rejoined CBS for 60 Minutes at 7:45. Betcha they wouldn't do this or at least to this extent if the preseason game CBS had involved the Dolphins, Bucs, & especially the Jaguars.

Seeing the TV listings locally today & next week, looks like KPHO (CBS Phoenix) is going to make the most out of their new broadcast contract for programming with the Arizona Cardinals by airing Cardinals Game Plan at 6:30 Wednesdays throughout the football season leading into CBS primetime, preempting the 6:30 newscast.

WHO 13 (NBC) in Des Moines Iowa will be airing Friday Night High School Football games soon with the first one airing tonight but on 13.4 on its weather channel.

On the WHO 13 News talking about the high school football game tonight they said NBC wouldn't allow them to pre-empt NBC programming for the high school football game tonight and that's why it's on 13.4.

Wondering what makes other sports High School or other events ok to pre-empt programs from local stations and others networks say no to and they can't. You would think the networks wouldn't want any of their programs to be pre-empted unless it was syndicated but not networks like primetime or daytime.

FOX affiliate WFQX pre-empted one Friday night lineup in 2020 to air the rivalry game between the two largest schools in its coverage area (Traverse City Central vs. Traverse City West). A few weeks later, they aired the first half of the longest-running rivalry game in its area (and one of the longest-running ones in the country; Ludington vs. Manistee) before punting the game over to its website at 8pm.

There is only one example I can remember of any inexplicable preemptions happening in the Albany NY, area. In early 1994 a new Peanuts special “You’re in the Super Bowl Charlie Brown” aired on NBC. This was the only Peanuts special to air on NBC instead of CBS (until the 00s when they switched over to ABC) because NBC aired the Super Bowl that year. I was a VERY hardcore Peanuts fan as a kid and new specials were like Christmas to me, especially by the early 90s when they were becoming rarer and rarer, it was actually the very last new special to air on network TV during Charles Schulz’s lifetime. So that night my family tuned into WNYT and were greeted with some kind of news documentary or something, I don’t know what it was it was a really long time ago, and as you can imagine I was very upset about it.

This preemption must have been decided at the last minute because the special was still listed in the TV booklet that came with our paper's Sunday Edition that week, that was how we knew about it in the first place, and I remember it was supposed to air on a Tuesday because we switched over to Full House when it failed to show. It's possible that we were looking at an outdated TV booklet or something, but that seems like a stretch. I know that nowadays most Peanuts fans usually consider this particular special to be amongst the worst ones, but that's besides the point, kid me still enjoyed it when, a couple of weeks later when we were visiting my aunt in Syracuse, my parents managed to get me the VHS at a Shell gas station, who were selling them as a promotional item since they sponsored the special.

This particular promotional VHS is the only time that the special has ever been made available after it aired because of the legal issues with things like the fact that the kids were all wearing uniforms with real-life team logos on them , and I don’t ever remember there being any Shell stations near where we lived and even if there were we had no idea they had them there, so it could be very lucky that we were visiting my aunt within the right time frame and that my parents decided to fill up at a Shell station.

Edit: Another story I just remembered. On the day that Dale Earnhardt died WXXA interrupted a new episode of Futurama to announce it. Don't mean to be disrespectful but I was very annoyed that they didn't wait until a commercial break to do that, especially because they re-aired the exact same announcement during a commercial break during that night's Simpsons episode instead of interrupting it

Tomorrow WTMJ will air the Peacock-exclusive match (Eagles vs Packers), with the AGT rerun airing at overnight and the Paralympics will be on WPXE. Same with Philly, where the AGT rerun also airing at overnight. Not sure about the Paralympics

Technically not a pre-emption, but the TV section that used to come with my paper and is now mailed separately had "Goonies" listed for last night. For whatever reason I never saw it.

Instead, the station joined just about every other station there was in airing the VMA Awards. Why? You only need one channel.
