They preempted that for this?

Maybe you should take that up with the OP of this thread. But considering that this thread is eight years old, he probably is not around anymore to offer up an explanation.

What I was referring to was one of the current participants of this thread who actually gives a damn about pre-emptions starting a new thread with more focus.

Start of NASCAR race preempted by college football

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series Chase for the Championship race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night started without being televised.

The race was supposed to air on ABC but was preempted by a Baylor vs. TCU college football game that ran long. The network, which owns ESPN, couldn’t move the game to another of its many networks due to other college football games and a Miami Heat vs. Cleveland Cavaliers preseason NBA game. The network did get the race on ESPN3, but many still couldn't watch if social media is any indication.

The race was finally picked up by ABC around 8 p.m. eastern time with fans missing key action from a NASCAR playoff race (25 laps total). Some networks didn’t pick up the race and opted to air the local evening news instead. Little Rock’s KATV in Arkansas was one such network that opted to air local news instead of the race, which not only infuriated viewers, but a NASCAR legend.

As a college football fan, and a maybe once a year NASCAR viewer, I'm glad NASCAR's deal with ESPN/ABC is up at the end of the season. Those Saturday night races do nothing but disrupt the Saturday night football games. Of course, this week was unusual, with that Baylor-TCU game lasting well over four hours. Maybe if NASCAR would actually take the fall off, nobody would be inconvenienced by all these scheduling conflicts.

Or if college football coaches would rediscover defense and the running game and stop giving us these bloated 4-plus-hour games. Just because a game winds up 62-58, or whatever the final of that abomination of a game was, doesn't make it a classic, or watchable for more than four hours. I can't stand NASCAR, but I hate what college football has turned into.

You could say the same for WJBK, KDFW, KSAZ, WTVT, KTBC, WJW, KTVI, WDAF, WHBQ, WBRC, etc.

During the time I lived in Dallas (1976-79) KDFW did very little pre-empting of the CBS schedule; I recall it didn't carry the Sunday-morning cartoons or the religious/cultural block of "Lamp Unto My Feet," "Look Up And Live," and "Camera Three" (but very few stations carried those three programs; WTVT was one that did), and it delayed the CBS late-night block a week and aired it at 11 PM (CT). Once I get past that, I can't remember any, although I think it started pre-empting CBS's 3 PM show about the time we left.
WTVT was the most pre-emption happy affiliate in Tampa Bay; it refused for years to clear CBS's 10 AM show (Mike Douglas used to run 9-10:30), it delayed "Search For Tomorrow" to 1 PM and pre-empted "Young And The Restless" in favor of the hour-long "Pulse Plus!" (I remember when it did run "Y&R" from 1 to 2 and pre-empted "Bold And The Beautiful'), it pre-empted CBS at 4 PM while NBC (Channel 8) and ABC (Channel 10) were carrying their network shows (yes, we got "The Money Maze," which a lot of ABC affiliates in the Eastern time zone turned down). It also pre-empted CBS's Saturday newscast and at least one of the network primetime movies as well as the CBS Friday late movie. And WJBK had the strange habit of carrying "Y&R" at 11:30 AM and "Love Of Life" at 1 PM; sister station WAGA did just the opposite, as did most CBS stations that delayed "Y&R" when it was a half-hour.

I also have to apologize for a couple of things: (1) misreading the thread about "Press Your Luck" in Memphis; I had forgotten that WREG did air it at 8:30 instead of 9:30 when it was on in the mornings (but then again Memphis is not a market I have the same interest in as I do some), and (2) the thing about keeping this on-topic, although I don't think it stops people from going off-topic.

From TexasTVNews on tvnewstalk.net:

As many of you already know, WFAA preempting ABC programming this Monday due to ESPN Monday Night Football (Cowboys v. Redskins). Dale Hansen has a pregame show at 6:30PM and Kickoff is at 7:30PM. In this case there's no "sister station" to carry the ABC Monday night programs. So, what this means is that WFAA ABC 8 will air Dancing with the Stars from 12:57am and Castle from 2:58am early Tuesday Morning. So I would set my DVR for those shows.

DWTS and Castle are airing on ABC in DC, while football is on FOX-owned WDCA (MNT).

WXYZ is preempting Last Man Standing and Cristella to 106am tonight for a Detroit Lions in London special from 730-9 tonight.

And Last Man Standing stars Detroit native Tim Allen.

In recent weeks WREG in Memphis has been regularly pre-empting the programming from CBS at 8 PM ET Saturday nights for a fund raising infomercial for Operation Smile. Now they're starting to run infomercials in a regular time slot in prime time. Even if it's in the least watched time of the week, CBS needs to put a stop to this.

It's really simple for a network to get an affiliate to stop pre-empting a particular time slot. The network just has to air a really good show that gets good ratings.

From PelicanGuy on tvnewstalk.net:

WWL is airing the final senatorial debate between incumbent Mary Landrieu and her challengers Rep. Bill Cassidy and Rob Maness at 7 pm Monday. This is only the second time all three candidates will debate together.

This preempts new episodes of 2 Broke Girls and The Millers.

The best chance of that this time of year would be if CBS would carry college football games on Saturday nights like ABC and Fox. It happens occasionally, but it's still not a weekly thing. I believe it's happening next week, and WREG is carrying it in its entirety.

Conflicting reports: The Attleboro Sun Chronicle (flip to page 7) says WCVB is preempting Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion tonight for the Steve Harvey special Young Men Big Dreams. Yet according to Zap2it, Star Wars Rebels is airing on WCVB and sister station WMUR. Anyone in Boston who can confirm this?

From bostonmediaguy on tvnewstalk.net:

The Steve Harvey special is scheduled to air Thursday at 8pm.

What's even more intriguing is that a newspaper still publishes a tv listing supplement!

That's the first day of November sweeps. And it's preempting a repeat of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, which is still airing on WMUR.

Detroit...again. On Wednesday, WDIV is preempting a new episode of The Mysteries of Laura for two local news specials. Laura is pushed to WADL, where it airs on Saturday(!). Also on Saturday, while WDIV is airing the Breeders' Cup (because it has to), they're dumping repeats of Law & Order: SVU and SNL for the Canadian vampire movie Love Bites.
