They preempted that for this?

In Northern Virginia whenever a Washington DC station wouldn't show something we usually see it on a station out of Baltimore or Richmond.

Where I lived, cable carried affiliates from both Fort Wayne and Dayton, and in some areas Columbus. We could get both markets with an antenna as well

At my parents house we had a TV antenna with a rotor where if a Memphis big 3 station pre-empted any show we could turn the antenna to another area with a station. ABC was the easiest because we could get WBBJ 7 in Jackson, TN and KAIT 8 in Jonesboro, AR. We could get CBS from KFVS 12 in Cape Girardeau, MO and NBC from WPSD 6 in Paducah, KY. Also, My grandmother and later my brother had cable in Dyersburg, TN, and KFVS and WPSD were on Cable One there. Later when I changed jobs, got married, and moved to the Jackson, TN area Charter carried WSMV NBC 4 and WTVF CBS 5 from Nashville. There was no alternative for Fox besides WHBQ 13 in Memphis until WJKT 16 in Jackson picked them up when UPN and WB merged and became CW, and WJKF went to Fox.

KAIT, KFVS, and WPSD went away as options after the digital conversion made them unreceivable, and Cable One dropped KFVS and WPSD. The same happened with WSMV and WTVF with Charter. Now however CBS is available from WBBJ 7.3, and NBC from WNBJ 39 in Jackson, both of which are on Charter. Charter carries both WJKT and WHBQ but Fox is blacked out from WHBQ. WBBJ is the only option now for ABC from Charter, but Cable one in Dyersburg also had WATN 24 from Memphis.

At my parents house we had a TV antenna with a rotor ...

Same story for me growing up. Everyone in town had rotors. Looking back, our area in the 60s didn't really need rotors. From Cedar Rapids we got CBS from 2 WMT-TV and ABC from 9 KCRG-TV. Waterloo's 7 KWWL-TV for NBC was too far away back then. Even with a 2000 ft tower built in the late 70s, too much interference from the other side...7 KHQA Hannibal/Quincy.

All we could get from Des Moines back then was the other network we needed: NBC from 13 WHO-TV. The other stations were too short and too far away.

As a bonus was the hometown station, CBS from 3 KTVO Ottumwa (talking about the main studio rule.. they got away with not having the main studio in C.O.L. of Kirksville MO for its first 18 years. They had a one camera studio at the transmitter that they called the main studio)

We could easily just have had the all-band VHF pointed at Cedar Rapids, with a ten element channel 13 antenna pointed at Mitchellville for WHO. We had enough signal from channel 3 to get a usable signal off the back side of the antennna. Less fun for DXing, but immune to freeze-ups in ice storms.

Typical antenna set-up in my part of West Central Ohio: A VHF antenna pointed to Dayton for channels 2 and 7, a UHF antenna pointed to Fort Wayne for 15, 21, 33 and later 55,and a smaller UHF antenna pointed to Lima for 35. We didn't have the "Lima" antenna and ours was a little lower than optimum

I was thinking about whether I needed to unplug any of the TVs when I go to the mountains. I need to keep one plugged in so I can tape all the shows I would otherwise miss. There is a risk there. I don't know what happened several years ago, but I lost all the shows i had taped during my time in the mountains. Maybe lightning caused something to happen. Everything worked after I got home but I just couldn't watch anything i had wanted to record.

So this is how I lost an episode of "Complete Savages". WLOS-TV in the mountains showed some local special while that was on. Why? They could have shown that during an ABC show that was a rerun. or they could have aired "Complete Savages" an hour later. They might have aired it at another time but i had no way of knowing. To this day I haven't seen the episode. Considering all the Youtube videos that there are, it might actually be there to watch!

Update UK TV stations may have pre-empted regular programming to air the tower on fire in London as of today

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/who-is-steve-scalise-louisiana-congressman-shot-in-virginia/

But in the USA CBSN and CBS affiliates are airing a mass shooting where one of the victims is Congressman Steve Scalise and the shooting is being compared to the Gabby Giffords incident. This is a case where 2 breaking stories are happening at the same time.

ABC, FOX, and NBC were also airing breaking news this morning about the congressional shooting. Heck, at first, local FOX O&O WJBK was airing coverage from DC O&O WTTG (complete with WTTG's bottom line) prior to FOX national going in

This isn't exactly a network pre-emption since network programs wouldn't be on at this time (and it's certainly not inexplicable). It was just before 4 Central Time when WNAM, a radio station in the Green Bay area, seemed to be joining a conversation between two meteorologists. I would assume that was going out over a local TV station as well. There had been weather bulletins mentioning that large hail and damage were likely. Nothing about possible tornadoes, I don't think. The first thing I heard when they joined the live conversation was that a tornado was on the ground. I also heard someone say a third meteorologist was joining the conversation, and someone saying the computer was getting so much information they couldn't keep up. There must be a topic around here somewhere for this sort of thing.

What is remotely inexplicable about major breaking news coverage? (And wasn't the theme about affiliates breaking away from the network during network time, not networks themselves airing breaking news?)

Yes and its a rare thing for Local stations to pre-empt national and international breaking news such as a mass shooting in Virginia and the tower fire in the UK to cover another mass shooting in their DMA zone. Yes these are all unfortunate unrelated events that happen to land on the same day.

Again, this is not about pre-empting a network program, but I tape a morning newscast from an antenna so I can see reports by one particular reporter. He wasn't on Wednesday morning. The newscast started with a brief mention of the shooting, and a few minutes later the entire newscast was devoted to that. I can't believe it happened that early in the morning.

So basically not germane to the topic at all?

I wonder why the networks didn't break in immediately when the shooting took place?

Some of the outlets like Sky UK and BBC News had London Tower Fire first but then again you had multiple breaking stories at the same time for completely unrelated reasons. The Last time I heard of multiple significant breaking news stories take place was because of 9/11/01. Then we had 2 mass shootings in the USA where the networks aired the Congressional Mass shooting and Local San Francisco TV Stations pre-empted the Virginia Mass shooting because of a Mass Shooting in San Francisco at the UPS building. National News outlets didn't really put emphasis on the San Francisco mass shooting for understandable reasons though due to the fact that one of the victims was a member of congress and rumors of other shooters connected to the in Virginia was still being verified.

Connecticut NBC Station Won’t Air Megyn Kelly Interview With Alex Jones

The NBC-owned station WVIT in Connecticut will not air Megyn Kelly’s interview with Alex Jones, TheWrap has learned.

The station serves the region of Connecticut that includes Newtown, the town where the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took place in 2012. In an internal memo, the station objected to the “Info Wars” host’s previous claims that the shooting — which left 28 people dead, including 20 children — was a hoax orchestrated using actors.

“Over the last few days, we have listened intently to Sandy Hook parents, our viewers and importantly, to you. We have considered the deep emotions from the wounds of that day that have yet to heal,” the memo read. “Because those wounds are understandably still so raw, we have decided not to air this week’s episode of ‘Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly.'”

Will other stations follow suit? BTW, isn't Newtown in Fairfield County (NYC DMA; WNBC presumably will air the show)?

We had a rotor too. Allowed us to pick up stations from Minneapolis/St Paul to the north. I'm not sure if our rotor(and booster) would have allowed us to pick up the signals clearly from the west with Sioux Falls and the south with Des Moines. We never tried though. So we got our Austin/Rochester/Mason City mamrket stations as well as KEYC out of Mankato(out of market but very close) as well as the Minneapolis/St Paul stations. This all ended for us in late September 1989 when we FINALLY got cable TV in our hometown.
