They preempted that for this?

Last night's mayoral debate in Knoxville pre-empted Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! on the local NBC affiliate WBIR. They were moved to their sister channel 10News2, which normally airs simulcasts and replays of WBIR's newscasts. I believe the channel is only carried on Charter and Comcast. Interestingly enough, 10News2 is even available on those providers in the Tri-Cities market, though WBIR itself is not. Fellow NBC affiliate WCYB carries the two shows there.

Tonight the Tennessee Titans are playing their first preseason game against Philadelphia, and the geme is being broadcast over their syndicated network, which will pre-empt regular programming:

Nashville: WKRN Ch. 2 (ABC)
Bowling Green, Ky.: WNKY Ch. 40 (NBC 40.1/CBS 40.2)
Chattanooga, Tenn.: WRCB Ch. 3 (NBC)
Evansville, Ind.: WTVW Ch. 7 (CW)/WEHT Ch. 25 (ABC)
Honolulu, Hawaii: KHON Ch. 2 (FOX)
Huntsville, Ala.: WZDX Ch. 54.1 (FOX)/WAMY Ch. 54.2 (MyTV)
Jackson, Tenn.: WJKT Ch. 16 (FOX)
Johnson City, Tenn.: WJHL Ch. 11 (CBS)
Knoxville, Tenn.: WATE Ch. 6 (ABC)
Memphis, Tenn.: WLMT Ch. 30 (CW)/WATN Ch. 24 (ABC)

In the cases of cities with multiple stations listed this is probably an either/or situation.

For WJKT Fox 16 in Jackson, Master Chef and Spin the Wheel will be shown after the game.

ALso I guess this will be happening with all NFL games during preseason that aren't on a major network.

Nashville: WKRN Ch. 2 (ABC)

Meaning Wheel of Fortune gets preempted for the 50th time this year in Nashville. WKRN always pre-empts it for any Titans game and a weekly Titans show on Mondays during the regular season. Sometimes they air it around midnight, but other nights like last night, they don't air it at all. They also frequently air local news specials on Thursdays in Wheel's time slot.

Ironically, the Titans also have a game on August 29, where that day's WOF is a rerun of an episode saluting Nashville, an episode that WKRN actually helped make possible, and yet they likely won't air it. They did air it the first time, though.

WKRN has a MeTV sub, so I don't get why they don't just move Wheel there when they have to. Other markets with MeTV subs will always do this, such as Indianapolis (WTHR) and Louisville (WLKY).

NYC's preseason Jets/Giants game was on WNBC 4 last night with pregame starting at 6:30 Eastern, so that station lost NBC Nightly News (although it does repeat overnight), Extra, Access, The Wall, and Hollywood Game Night, and the schedule did not have any make-goods of any of the shows.

Since I live by the NY/CT border, I also receive WVIT 6 out of Hartford where the evening lineup is identical, so I could have watched the shows there if I wanted to (albeit in SD). Something I noticed back when NBC carried TNF is that WNBC and WVIT both showed favoritism towards Access (then Access Hollywood). Since pregame started at 7:30, both stations would move Access to 7:00 and replace Extra, which wouldn't air at all on either.

Upstate, Elmira's NBC affiliate WETM 18 carried two stately games. The main channel aired the Colts/Bills game starting at 7:00, pre-empting Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, The Wall, and Hollywood Game Night. Only HGN got a make-good at 3:00 AM. Usually if this station pre-empts WOF or J!, they move to its indie sub 18.2, but they were carrying the other NY game, Jets/Giants. Counting pregame and postgame shows, it took over 18.2's schedule from 6:30-10:30, pre-empting Two and a Half Man, a repeat of WETM's 6:00 news, Modern Family, Dateline, Chicago PD, and a 10:00 newscast.

WVIT-TV (NBC) of New Britain, CT was channel 30, not 6. Maybe you're talking a cable positioner? Many Comcast and Cox systems in greater Hartford had them on analog channel 4.

I must be. I have Comcast and my network lineup is like this...

2 - WCBS NY (CBS)
3 - WFSB CT (CBS)
4 - WNBC NY (NBC)
5 - WNYW NY (FOX)
6 - WVIT CT (NBC)
7 - WABC NY (ABC)
9 - WWOR NY (MyTV)
11 - WPIX NY (CW)
13 - WNET NY (PBS)
16 - CPTV CT (PBS)

Wheel of Fortune was pre-empted in the following markets last night by various preseason games or pregame shows:

  • Huntsville, AL - WAFF/NBC
  • Los Angeles, CA - KABC/ABC (airing the Thu-Fri episodes on Fri-Sat, the latter replacing the previous-season repeat)
  • Palm Springs, CA - KMIR/NBC
  • Washington, DC - WJLA/ABC
  • Orlando, FL - WFTV/ABC (bumped to 10:30 PM immediately after the game)
  • Peoria, IL - WMBD/CBS (bumped to 1:37 AM)
  • Terre Haute, IN - WTWO/NBC
  • Baltimore, MD - WBFF/FOX (bumped to 3:30 AM, but listings still had Live PD)
  • Boston, MA - WBZ/CBS (bumped to 2:37 AM)
  • Bay City, MI - WNEM/CBS (bumped to MyTV .2 sub, but listings still had Access)
  • Las Vegas, NV - KLAS/CBS
  • Elmira, NY - WETM/NBC
  • Rochester, NY - WROC/CBS (delayed to 9:00 AM the next day)
  • Durham, NC - WTVD/ABC (bumped to Live Well Network .2 sub, but listings still had Food Rush)
  • Columbus, OH - WBNS/CBS
  • Nashville, TN - WKRN/ABC
  • El Paso, TX - KDBC/CBS

Of these 17 affiliates, Jeopardy! was pre-empted on 9: KABC, KMIR, WJLA, WTWO, WBZ, KLAS, WETM, WROC, and KDBC. Those that bumped Wheel also bumped J! in the same fashion. Jeopardy! was also pre-empted on WBBH Fort Myers (NBC), though Wheel was not.

KTVT CBS 11 in Dallas will be airing the Cowboys game against the 49ers tomorrow, which the game begins at 8 PM with the pre-game at 7 PM, the CBS saturday programming of NCIS: New Orleans and 2 back to back 48 Hours episodes will be airing on sister station KTXA Texas 21.

Last Friday's Vikings/Saints preseason game pre-empted Wheel of Fortune on three southern affiliates: WVUE New Orleans (FOX), KATC Lafayette (ABC), and WLOX Biloxi (ABC). WVUE bumped the show to 11:00 PM while the other two did not air the show at all. Jeopardy! was not affected on any of the three due to its time slots not conflicting with the game.

Friday's Buccaneers/Steelers game pre-empted both Wheel and Jeopardy! on WKBN, Youngstown, Ohio's CBS affiliate. They were bumped to 3:02 and 3:32 AM.

Preseason football is probably the time of year with the most pre-emptions. Of the 210 media markets, there are fewer than 10 that do not air any preseason football (notable ones include Paducah-Cape Girardeau-Carbondale [neighboring St. Louis, Evansville, and Memphis all get multiple teams] and Lincoln-Hastings-Kearney [neighboring Omaha gets THREE teams])

I was surprised to see that even Alaska is airing next week's Packers/Raiders games on all three of its ABC affiliates.

Once the regular season begins, Thursday Night Football causes local/syndie pre-emptions on FOX stations starting at 7:30 ET/4:30 PT. In New York, WNYW only loses a Modern Family rerun.

I was surprised to see that even Alaska is airing next week's Packers/Raiders games on all three of its ABC affiliates.

Alaska ABC/CW/FOX carries 4 different teams (all owned by same folks) in Pre-Season
Packers games are on ABC
LA Rams games are on FOX, ABC or CW
New England games are on CW
Seattle games are on FOX

Hawaii carries multiple teams...here was week 1

NE-DET 8/8 13:30 HT KHNL 13.2 (K5TV)
LAC-ARZ 8/8 16:00 HT KGMB 5 (CBS)
DEN-SEA 8/8 16:00 HT KHNL 13 (NBC)
MIN-NO 8/9 14:00 HT KHNL 13.2 (K5TV)
CIN-KC 8/10 14:00 HT KHNL 13.2 (K5TV)
LAR-OAK 8/10 14:00 HT "KHON 2 (FOX)/KHII 9 (MY)"
DAL-SF 8/10 15:00 HT "KITV 4 (ABC)/(17:00) KHNL 13.2 (K5TV)"

Given the circumstances, and it really shouldn't matter about whether a game show (let alone any non-news program) gets bumped, it looks like the Jeopardy-Wheel combo (and probably some of ABC primetime) may bumped and/or delayed in Philadelphia tonight on WPVI. There's breaking news coverage where six Philadelphia Police officers were shot in an ongoing standoff, which has been going on since around 4:30pm ET. They already pre-empted World News Tonight as I'm writing this, and I can imagine that other regularly-scheduled programming on KYW, WCAU, and WTXF will be bumped as well throughout the evening.

Judging by ABC News' live stream of WPVI's coverage, it continued well into the 8:00 PM hour.

Last night, coverage of the Little League Grand Slam Parade in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania pre-empted NBC Nightly News, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy! on Wilkes-Barre NBC affiliate WBRE.

There was also the Friends of the Smokies telethon in Tennessee, pre-empting WOF and Jeopardy! on Knoxville NBC station WBIR (which moved them to 10News2) as well as ABC affiliate WLOS out of Ashville, NC (moving them post-Nightline at 1:07 and 1:37 AM).

This week's New York preseason games are on WCBS and WNBC.

On Thursday, WCBS aired the Jets/Falcons game from 7:30-10:30, pre-empting Entertainment Tonight, Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, Big Brother, and half of Elementary. All except ET aired on sister station WLNY, which is always used as a backup whenever CBS network programming (but typically not syndies) gets pre-empted. WCBS joined Elementary in progress after the game at the same time it was airing on WLNY. ET was not a total loss since the same episode repeats on WLNY at midnight. The usual primetime lineup on WLNY is Dr. Phil at 8, a one-hour newscast at 9, and a double run of Judge Judy at 10. Phil and Judy also air on WCBS from 3-5 PM with the exact same episodes, so again, this was not a total loss for the shows. Neighboring CBS affiliate WFSB Hartford did not air the game, so all shows including ET could be watched there in my case on the NY/CT border.

WNBC is airing tonight's Bears/Giants game from 7:30-10:30, pre-empting the time slots for Access, a two-hour episode of American Ninja Warrior, and half of Dateline. Access moves up to 7:00, pre-empting Extra (Wonder why they do that. Aren't they basically the same show? WVIT Hartford would do this too when they aired games at 7:30). Dateline is scheduled to be joined in progress after the game, and ANW will air at 3:00 AM, but it's a different episode that is only one hour long. The lineup can be watched unaffected on neighbors WVIT.

Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! were pre-empted on NBC affiliate WILX in Lansing, Michigan last night due to a special titled "Decades with the Dean". Both shows aired on its .3 AntennaTV sub, but the listings still said Archie Bunker's Place. Also, the same episode of Jeopardy! aired on WILX at 12:00 PM (in place of a year-old repeat), but Wheel only had the one airing on AntennaTV. (Another example of how many stations are biased towards Jeopardy! compared to Wheel and other syndies)

CBS affiliate KLST and sister NBC station KSAN in San Angelo, Texas aired a high school football preview show last night, pre-empting Wheel of Fortune on the former and Entertainment Tonight on the latter. Wheel was bumped to 12:37 AM. Would have made more sense if they bumped it to the year-old Jeopardy! repeat slot IMO, maybe if not for the rule that Wheel can't air in the afternoon...

Wheel of Fortune was also pre-empted in the following markets last night by preseason NFL:
  • Huntsville, AL - WAFF/NBC (programming director specifically said that their only other option was a 3:07 AM makegood and figured it "wasn't agreeable" with viewers)
  • San Francisco, CA - KGO/ABC
  • Washington, DC - WJLA/ABC
  • Savannah, GA - WSAV/NBC
  • Baltimore, MD - WBFF/FOX (bumped to 3:30 AM)
  • Omaha, NE - KETV/ABC (bumped to MeTV .2 sub)

Of these, Jeopardy! was only pre-empted in DC and Savannah. KGO in particular gave a big "FU" to Wheel fans last night. Their schedule originally had Wheel at 8:00 after the Raiders game and Jeopardy! at 8:30. This is the opposite of the order they usually air in, so they likely were trying to avoid the chance of J! getting pre-empted if the game ran long, but didn't care if it happened to Wheel. Then by last night, Wheel was replaced with a local newscast, likely to make up for the 6:00 news getting pre-empted. Despite this, Jeopardy! was still on the schedule at 8:30, and Wheel was no longer listed at all. Using Locast, I tuned into the game at 8 Pacific time and there were still over 3 minutes left on the clock, so enough overrun may have caused the news to pre-empt part of J! unless they opted to start it late.

KGO has the same scheduling for Monday. Wheel was listed at 8:00, now it's gone. Wheel of Fortune is officially the punching bag of syndies.
