WIS in Columbia did the same thing. I had my ZapperBox recording (I'd programmed it last night), so I had to switch over quickly to CBS (WLTX). WIS went on with their local news until 1 pm.

Major fail for both WIS and WSMV. I am wondering if NBC was delivering a feed and they just didn't pick it up, or if NBC itself was asleep at the wheel.

NBC has a feed. My local NBC (KMNF-LD) has carried it since it went live (right after the smoke).
KEYC CBS 12 has carried it too (both are owned by Gray). FOX has regular programming

I'd think more the former considering how affiliates are sometimes when it comes to handling network breaking news coverage where its sometimes optional to pick up + local ad revenue too. Here in Phoenix, all the Big 4 stations are carrying it.

At least some 7:00 ET CBS airings of #S-8184 will be pre-empted by an optional extended edition of CBS Evening News due to the new Pope. Contestant Kyle from this episode is from the Boston market and has already received word that WBZ will be moving WOF to WSBK.

My ZapperBox let me down. Once I discovered that WIS wasn't providing coverage, and WLTX was, I immediately started what I thought would be continuous recording on the ZB until I told it otherwise. Nope, it stopped at the end of the scheduled program (The Bold and The Beautiful).

Here in Phoenix, KPHO didn't show the 2nd half-hour, opting to keep their 6:30 newscast local (which unlike the other afternoon/evening newscasts, is exclusive to CBS5, not simulcasted on KTVK 3TV). In regards to network coverage itself, no surprise about ABC considering they have Nightline & they'll probably have a special 20/20 on the new Pope if not tomorrow night, definitely in the near future, knowing how they are when if comes to covering breaking news.

There weren't a lot of Catholics where I live in the Charlotte area but there are more than there used to be. "Jeopardy" aired as usual. I was more concerned about severe weather coverage, but that was limited to crawls. However, I didn't know how bad things were. There were severe thunderstorm warnings for two counties next to mine, and I am near both of the counties. And the same line of storms had produced golf ball size and even lime size hail. I never heard of lime size hail. The rain was really coming down and there was quite a bit of thunder and maybe wind, but not what anyone would call severe.

Tonight's the 2nd Arizona Diamondbacks game on KPNX (NBC Phoenix) against the Los Angeles Dodgers & the primetime NBC programming will be shown tonight after Seth Meyers rerun & that'll likely be the norm for D'backs gamenights on 12 News going forward, the first game didn't go that way due to Pope Francis's funeral a few weeks back. Love the big game treatment they give pregame, having a one-hour special at 3 from Chase Field & having at least an anchor there along with the sports anchor on the newscasts. BTW, ABC will air a one-hour special 20/20 on Pope Leo XIV tonight at 9/8c. They always like doing this after big breaking news happens on many occasions.

There are a lot more Catholics in the Charlotte area than there used to be. In-migration from the urban Northeast has fueled much of that.

I would say that if a choice had to be made, threatening weather coverage was more important.

If you wanted to see some serious coverage of the new Pope, the Chicago stations were the place to go. For obvious reasons, they are all over it, it's pretty much all WBBM and WMAQ have been able to talk about. Chicago being Chicago, and having a hometown son elected, it's no wonder.

On now-defunct Guiding Light, Sacramento's then-CBS affiliate KXTV (now ABC) dropped it in 1992, and when KXTV and KOVR swapped in 1995, KOVR refused to do the same thing and even as a CBS O&O. Pretty uncommon for a network O&O station not clearing a show broadcast by their network. Fox's Weekend Marketplace, different story.

Congress, the NAB, and the FCC screwed us on the SHVERA and later STELA laws on distant network feeds. It would be nice if they let us watch network programming (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX from NYC East/LA West) on like DirecTV for example on satellite incase of a local station pre-empts it for local or nonsense stuff. But never happen to satellite subs.

I miss getting WHDH in Boston, KTVU in San Francisco, WSB in Atlanta, and WUSA in Washington DC on my prime star! Also, when I grew up in Elba, AL we had both Montgomery and Dothan stations until 2003 when with the exception of WSFA it became all Dothan,

Thank you for this. I will need to find a way to dedicate storage space (6 GB), probably a thumb drive, as this just about maxes out the hard drive storage space on my laptop.

My laptop can't transfer a 6 GB file to a 32 GB thumb drive, says there is insufficient space (which there's not, may be some kind of buffering issue, or cache issue, or whatever you call it, I understand the concept even if I don't know the proper name).

I'll try to find a shorter video of similar live coverage, the first four hours or so of this video aren't relevant to the election of Leo XIV as Pope. I'd like to have some kind of archive of the live network feed for historical purposes.

Perhaps it's not inexplicable, but to those of us who actually wanted to see NBC's game shows, or David Letterman at the correct time, it's inexcusable that WMC's station management was allowed to get away with it for as long as they did. It lasted until the station was sold in the early 90's to what would eventually become Raycom, but by that time NBC was caving in and giving most of daytime back to the local stations, and WMC moved Late Night back to 11:35 CT only after Conan O'Brien took over as host.

What NBC should have been doing was to penalize stations like WMC that pre-empted too much of their programming, possibly even to the point of losing their affiliation. I've read where that happened with some stations, but NBC let WMC and others get away with being pre-emption crazy.

Same goes with ABC and WSB as well as CBS and WKMG.

The WSMV pre-emption Saturday sounds like may have been accidental or a scheduling screw-up, but in the 80's WMC in Memphis would regularly come into Major League Baseball games on NBC late because NOTHING came before Memfus Rasslin' (which also pre-empted some Saturday morning cartoons over the years), even if it meant coming into major sports on NBC late, and this went on for years.

One place where WMC pre-empted sports that I didn't mind was when they carried football games on the syndicated SEC network instead of other sports from NBC on Saturday afternoons including Notre Dame Football in later years because I'd usually rather see the SEC game. That lasted until the SEC Network games moved to WLMT 30 in Memphis in the early 90's.

WSFA would also do the same for the Jefferson-Pilot sports package. Future sister station WDFX in Dothan would air the Notre Dame games though.
