If they can strip an entire building of copper pipe or to get back to radio topics plow up an entire field of ground radials they could take one of the newer solid state transmitters. The TV transmitter wold still be a challenge but the new smaller radio transmitters not so much. Bring back the big old Gates and RCA behemoths. ;D

It's a Harris HPX-30. Not exactly what you'd call a smaller transmitter.

Unless they were at least somewhat knowledgeable in Electrical matters, they probably would have met their maker when they attempted to cut the electrical service to it.

I don't condone the activity but it seems to me if you're going to steal a radio transmitter, don't do it during morning drive on a popular station; somebody will definitely notice.

So does anyone know how long K99 was OFF THE AIR?

Also, I would have thunk since COX doesn't spare much expense, that they would have had the fence and the building alarmed; it is in west Dayton after all.

It was off the air until the 2550 pound, 2 cabinet, 6'6" tall transmitter could be located by the police, recovered from the scrapyard, muscled back into the building, connected to RF, AC, audio, control, exporter, and importer.

All in about 3 hours.

Actually, I think the thieves unplugged the processor and that's about it, other than stealing some computers and metal.

If it wasn't alarmed before, it should be very soon.

Also, is WHKO's aux tx the one in operation right now? I'm not sure how police are investigating this, but wouldn't the tx stolen be withheld currently by the police, given that the third person is still at large?

No transmitters were stolen, Nathan. They are currently on their main transmitter.

Gotcha. My apologies for the confusion.

This is way beyond my geographical area -but-should raise concerns about others to check their security at the transmitter(s)...also since radio stations are federally regulated, shouldn't these
thieves be turned over to the FBI? and do time a federal pen? Just wondering...

Apparently that angle is being pursued by local law enforcement as well. Two men arrested after K99.1 FM ....

Why don't we wait for the facts? This just seem to be to good to be true.

Greg knows of what he speaks...he is a Cox employee. Also...read the humor between the lines on his post...

Lets hear what the Cox Engineering Dept. has to say about this before we jump to conclusions.

Greg is an engineer with Cox. There is nothing more to read into this. Move along.
