Things about WOKV I Can't Understand

They've been cutting into Rush Limbaugh by adding too many commercials to various clusters - I've noticed this about twice every show. In other words, Rush rejoins later - gthe last spotin the cluster is simply run over him.

They've added some software or hardware in order to scrunch the show - so they can add even more commercial time, likely at the end of an hour. Yep, keep listeners tuned in with more and more commercials and the same boring PSAs and over-the-top promos. Bad Radio.

Also, why does WOKV run so many spots for HD radio? Is WOKV consciously trying to get people totune away from WOKV? HD Radio is like the old AM Stereo. Nobody cared about AM stereo, or wanted to buy new receivers in order to receive it. Now, who wants to buy new Radios just to listen to HD Radio?

Seems to me everyone's doing IPods these days.

Considering this is the ONLY station in the Jax cluster with any ratings, are you really surprised? yes, I've heard it too, cutting into Rush's show, it sounds sloppy, the poor board op must get really confused trying to time out to their local avails.

But hey, Bob Nealy must be happy.............

By the way, I am almost positive certain "local" personalities are able to work there, because they are primaril doing sales. Maybe they have to sell their own shows! You hear them on so many spots, claiming they use all the products they advertise. Sure.

WOKV has been compressing the Limbaugh show for years ... it's just lately that they've been obvious in running long on those stop sets. If I'm not mistaken, all the Cox Jacksonville stations run more than their fair share of HD ads, but running them so heavily on a cash cow like OKV makes no sense.
Don't overestimate the impact of i-pods in mainstream America. Most of the handful of people I know that use them on a regular basis just use them for music or videos ... podcast programs are for someone who has the time to get them from a website and THEN listen, and most folks I know are a little busier than that. They use their i-pods in ADDITION to radio, not INSTEAD of radio.
The same people who cried Wolf over satellite radio are doing just that with i-pods. Those of us fighting the fight here in New Radio will dispatch them the same way we've dispatched satellite - Hard work against the new foes, not sitting around bitching about the old ones.
BTW-the "local's" on the weekend pay for their one or two hour shows, then OKV runs spots by them saying how the station made them millionaires and such. It implies that you are some sort of chimpanzee business person if you DON'T advertise on OKV ... and make them join the Limbaugh show in progress!

I'm postive sure Bob Schuman and Cole Pepper are bringing in sponsorship money for gtheir shows, in order for said hosts to keep their jobs.

I listen to the Savage show at 10 PM at his archive site - zero commercials, PSAs or aanything else. I agree that Ipod listenership will take over Radio, but also I say that Internet Radio can;t work with ten zillion people doing ten zillion formats (like on Live365.com.

All that's out there seems to be rap and hip-hop garbage, and hardly any moderate Talk-show hosts whose game is helping people; not blasting them. But Radio has turned into National Enquirer crap, and the market will decide who survives.

Some of us may have to re-learn how to turn things off and actually speak to our spouses and family!! Horrors!

Interacting with other humans on a personal level!?!?
Perish the thought!

Hey! I often go to Panera Bread (when wifey is at work) and only then do I take my laptop. I never, ever would own a bluetooth! Weird looking people, often WITH a companion, seem to always be around, tied to laptop, cell/bluetooth, Ipod, and i sometimes see guys wearing big headphones like I used to use when on the air!

Never, ever, do I take my laptop when wifey and I are together, and my cellphone is OFF.

But when I am by myself, I somtimes listen to archived shows via a simple earpiece, so I don't bother anyone.

My Radio is more OFF today than it ever was, and this from a true Radiophile goingback to 1953 when I was 3!

TV is way more off than it used to be, as well. is there any hope for Radio?

I think there IS hope, but radio's next incarnation will be nothing like it was back in the day. It can't be. The rules and laws have changed the perameters forever.
Look at it in terms of the evolution of life on Earth. The Giant Asteroid from Outer Space has hit, and the wave of destruction is moving out from Ground Zero. It wont be until the dust settles that we can determine The New World Order. In the meantime some species will die off, others will be born, and the survivors will adapt. We just don't know because we don't know the new physical laws governing out industry yet ... Im not talking FCC or any other physical entity. I'm talking about the economy, technology and how it's embraced by middle America, and whether or not a new pool of talent can rise from the ashes and carry on into the new world.
We can make it ... just how remains to be seen.

They are the only game in town, we don't have a choice..........down the road in Market # 63, Gainesville has 2 FM talkers, they both sound great.

Long time reader, first time poster. Thanks for taking my post.

I'm sure (or as wrko writes, "positive sure") that every host and personality in radio is expected to bring in sponsorship money for their shows/station. Some are out beating the bushes and making cold calls...basically splitting time between programming and sales, while others bring revenue in because they get ratings and are marketable personalities.

I know this is a little off the original statement about HD spots and compressing Rush Limbaugh, but as I understandit, WOKV is one of the few stations in town that asks their on-air people to be just that--on air, and don't have them doing double duty in sales. Isn't this the way it should be?

It is very simple, Programming from the sky, a laptop, your cell phone, or that tiny little ipod ALL contribute to what has happened to radio, and what will continue to happen. HD radio is a bad bet. It is the ever increasing options consumers have for entertainment and news. It is competition on a level radio has never seen and quite frankly, was not prepared for. Radio owners were asleep at the wheel! The competition is not for users, it is for dollars. Radio must find a way to generate dollars with fewer listeners. HD radio is not the answer, most everyone here knew that years ago because the writing has been on the wall for some time.

Agree - owners were asleep, must find a way to generate dollars, competition is for dollars.
Disagree - competition is also for users/listeners

Can radio compete w/ choices? Sure can, if you know what to do and how to do it. ;)

Never thought I would see the day Cox would stoop so low for money to do a remote at Wacko's. A Jacksonville low rent strip bar. Guess you have to go where the money is but are things THAT bad ?

That just shows Talk Radio 970 was years ahead of its time. Are we sure Greg Larson isn't in sales at Cox?

1. WOKV does NOT speed up or put a delay on the Rush Limbaugh show. Any sloppiness heard in rejoining the show is completely the fault of whoever is operating the board locally. Something to consider would be that it is still the summer book, and that is when most full time employees are urged to use their vacation time. It is very well possible that a part-time employee who normally does not run the show is still getting used to Rush's clock, which is different than Boortz's, Hannity's, and Howard's.

2. Bob Schuman and Cole Pepper do not sell advertising in addition to their on-air duties, but they DO use the products they do spots for. Most clients insist on it because it is an easy way to offset talent fees. They may sometimes go on a sales call, but only at the request of the FULL-TIME sales staff who is selling live/recorded sponsorships for the station.

3. The HD Radio spots and the "Weekend Host" spots are filler. This is an effort to lessen the load of PSA's while the market adjusts to a lower frequency of advertising.

4. As for Michael Savage's "archive site"...(#1) It belongs to his syndicator not to Savage...(#2) There are no commercials due to a law passed saying that any voice talent used to record commercials must be paid again for airing on the internet. This is why most radio stations web streams just play filler when in commercial breaks, unless a client has PAID for web advertising...(#3) If you go to Savage's page at MichaelSavage.com you will find in lieu of hiring his own advertising staff to sell ads, he has resorted to begging for donations, and shilling hats and mugs. That's the same premise as selling to clients, except now you (listener) are asked to foot the bill. Somebody has to pay for his website bandwidth

That's about all the insight I've got on this thread. The next time you guys want to know what's going on, just ask. Speculation makes you look silly, and out-of-touch
