Things can't go any worse at KUSI

Apparently things are getting really bad at KUSI.

Not only did they lose a chance at snagging the FOX affiliation for San Diego, they have now lost Regis and Kathy Lee which apparently they really did well with at 9-10 a.m. My moles tell me is that they will now air more local news in the 9-10 a.m. time slot when they lose Reg.

Also I am hearing they are axing personnel from the news department as well....10 as of last Friday....OUCH!

Well, I'm not sure losing "Regis and Kathy Lee" is the earth shattering end of the world for any TV station.

On the other hand, I think the other information you just noted is more significant (if it's true).

I should have said "Regis and Kelly" (I just proved that I don't watch the show!). R and K is a big rating getter for independent stations. Big Ratings = big money.

But just one show, not the only thing available. One show shouldn't bring down an entire station.

Garrett, under what rock do you live under...and you are a public school teacher? You never quite understand things fully. And why do you even attempt to discuss San Diego broadcasting when you are living in Texas?

TV stations get big bucks from running "Regis and Kelly" during the morning block. It draws a lot of viewers to a station....then the station gets to charge advertisers big bucks for the large audience they are delivering.

"Let me get this straight....They are going to ADD a 9-10am Newscast while CUTTING the news dept?"

The same thing is happening at KPIX. They just announced layoffs, including news reporters Manuel Ramos, Tony Rusamanno, and a couple of others. This is on the heels of their new 10:00PM newscast on "the CW." (44).

Ouch!

Please, there's no need to resort to that kind of talk.

I do not see how that is of anyone's business, and what difference would that make anyway?

I'm very sorry that bothers you.
First of all, I never claimed to understand anything fully, and nobody ever does. If I were to do that, that would be wrong. I am sorry that I gave that impression.
Just a friendly discussion on a message board. If I'm wrong, fine, you are welcome to disagree. But really, it did not seem like that big a deal, just an opinion about a TV show. I've worked for many years for two different TV affiliates in various capacities, and just because it was not a TV station in San Diego shouldn't matter (in my opinion). Please accept my apologies to you if that is a problem.

Second, by what authority is it of anyone's other than the moderators to decide which message board I am qualified to post to?
FYI: I lived (and worked) in San Diego for 12 years. I lived there from 1988 to 1998, worked at 2 radio stations there beforfe leaving and came back between 2001 and 2003. And, I was in San Diego two weeks ago, and watched plenty of TV, and even made a few radio airchecks (copies of which you are welcome to have). I would like to live in San Diego again, and I am constantly listening to San Diego stations over the internet and reading the web pages of 6, 8, 10, 13, 51 and 69. I'm not really sure what your criteria is for "qualifying" anyone to talk about San Diego TV and Radio stations, perhaps you are suggesting to the mods that there be a rules change, I don't know.

Either way, I didn't think I was under an obligation to justify myself for anyone. I realize that this must be a personal subject for you and I am sorry that I upset you. I guess you are close to the situation, so please do not take offense. I mean ZERO disrespect, espeically if you work at a San Diego TV station and know stuff that I don't know. I am not claiming to know anything, and again, I am sorry if I came accross that way.

I don't disagree with you on that point at all, and I am sorry that my discussion with you is getting you upset. But if Regis and Kelly is so important, why do TV stations have more than one program. Can't KUSI just find another TV show to plug in? To me, the bigger story would be the fact that they can not find another syndicated show to replace them. Again, just my opinion, that's all. If that's not the way it is, well I am sorry that I have it wrong.

I am sure that R&K allows stations to sell advertising time and bring in strong billing. But is it really the only syndicated show that can do that?

Really, I am sorry that you got upset or offended, and PLEASE do not think I'm trying claim to know about these things, please accept my apology, it was just an opinion, that's all. Believe me, nothing upsets me more than when people post on the board like they know what they are talking about and don't know anything, and I think we agree more than we disagree.

I don't know what else to say to you about this, but please do not hold a gruge.

KUSI has been trying for a good while to get FOX and FOX didn't seem interested in them at all. It didn't seem bad luck as much as Zell (the Tribune's new owner) having a better relationship with FOX (read Murdoch)

Could it be that KUSI simply didn't want to spend the money for Regis and Kelly? That show is one of the most expensive syndicated programs available to stations. Another thing to keep in mind is that the local station only gets to sell a third of the advertising time for the program. The remaining advertising time is controlled by the syndicator.

Running an hour of news is a lot cheaper and has more advertising spots than Regis.
