Things get weirder: BMP plans to revive The Beat

There were rumblings of the proposed migration a few weeks ago. I have to hand it to BMP for
trumping Univision in the press. An indication of more battles in Austin between these 2
media groups. However, the real war begins Monday. Look for more surprising moves from BMP
in the months to come.

In all reality, it isnt much of a signal. You can bet that station (less than 3 thousand watts) hired the old Beat staff back for about half of what they were already making. It wont make much difference in the long run. They will be just strong enough to take about 2 shares away from Hot 93.

If i'm not mistaken, I believe there is an application to move 104.9's tower several miles closer to Austin (currently just East of Dripping springs), to just west of the "Y" in Oak Hill (about 10-12 miles W of downtown Austin). It will have more of a directional signal pattern, but it can't hurt. I dont know about the timing of this move, and it could be too late by then.

The move is so directionalized that it is a flat top to the north and equally severe to the east. Both directions that they MUST cover to hold on to loyal listeners of The Beat. Hot should win this one, hands down.

Judge it for yourself.... old pattern http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1048711.html
new pattern http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1167857.html

You don't cut back a signal in the area that you want to cover. If they want to "optimize" an antenna, you can't do it. The directional pattern must be field tested to "prove" that directional pattern is correct. That leaves no room for "improvement". It really seems like a very bad move.

I agree, VERY limited coverage, and will be a challenge. The morning show took calls from listeners yesterday complaining about the weak signal and interference. The DJs just seemed happy to be there and working.

Out of curiosity, what is limiting their coverage to the north and east? My guess would be to accomodate co-channels at 104.9 in Waco/Mexia (north) and La Grange (east).
