Things I've never heard before

I do most of my radio listening through headphones, and continue to hear things I've never heard before. For instance, I've been in radio, mostly at pop/rock/top 40 stations for 33 years. I must have played "Heaven must be missing an Angel" by Tavares hundreds of times through the years. But this morning I was listening to the "70s and 80s flashback weekend" on Lite 102.9 in Charlotte, and for the first time I heard that the rhythm pattern at the beginning of the song is far more complex than I thought. I could clearly hear more instruments, and a syncopated line I'd never heard before.

Don't tell me the "HD" doesn't stand for "high definition". Even on familiar records THERE'S MORE TO HEAR with hd. It's stunning to hear this level of detail on over-the-air radio! And for music lovers, and particularly those of us who are also musicians, the ability to hear more of what's on the record is worth it. It's what audio gear IS FOR!

I'll tell you, it doesn't - the HD, in HD Radio, stands for hybred-digital, not high-definition - actually, the HD Radio Cartel now says, that it doesn't stand for anything, but sneaky, as they are, consumers think that it stands for high-definition (that was the whole sneaky plan, anyway). Actually, it it stunning to hear in pure analog, not digital, with digial artifacts - unfortunately, most people aren't audiophiles, or musicians, so they don't care much about audio quality. If HD Radio, ever makes it into automobiles, outside of BMW, which is more-and-more doubtful, road and engine noise cancel out any supposed improvements in audio quality (HD Radio doesn't work well in moving vehicles, anyway). Too bad, for the HD Radio Cartel, that was banking partly on false claims of audio improvement - have you seen the latest Google Trends, for HD Radio:

Well Richard Cranium, er...I mean 700 I KNOW it doesn't stand for anything actually (the HD). It was chosen because of how it sounds.

MY POINT was that the actual received definition (as in the ability to hear deeper into a recording) IS HIGHER. It's called wit, Dude. My attempt at being clever. Zoom, right past ya'! What a shock!

Things I've never heard before

Me too, with spectral based lossy compression the levels in certain frequency bands are equal to the orginal. Depending on what it is it can highlight or hide things that were in the orginal source material.

In addition multi-band processing at the station can totally re-EQ the orginal material.

That is why, I only quoted part of your post - I am just an ignorant software engineer, but I do know enough, as an unbiased consumer, that this whole HD Radio rollout is just a big fraud; too bad, most other consumers have no clue, what is going on behind-the-scenes.

Despite the road noise, I can still here the multipath and picket fencing on analog, which HD radio effectively clears up. Your statement that HD radio doesn't work well in moving cars is patently false!

;D Right on MIKE!!! I live in the NC mountains in terrain that might be worse that yours (Asheville) and tons of the multipath nasty is gone!!! I do hear more and I hear it in the car over the road noise!! Preach on brother MIKE!!! It seems like the people that have an HD radio are satisfied with them and the ones without are the complainers...kinda like the 5 y/o kid that will not try a new food at the dinner table and says they "Don't like it" but have NEVER tried it!! Here's one for ya!......WESC-FM Greenville, I drove 45 minutes in nasty mountain terrain from Greenville to Asheville Friday and lost the HD signal 1 time, the analog was gone too! I puposely went up the old US 25 near the Greenville watershed and behind Pinnicle Mtn. For you DXer's out there- when ducting is happening the HD WILL come alive, I caught a few HD stations out of Alabama here in WNC....not to shabby!!

Here's a post, from Adam_F123, on the AVS HD Board (which, I am not allowed to post a link to):

"Improving reception in-car for HD?"

"I have a 95 Toyota truck with a regular metal whip antenna. I just bought a JVC HD radio. I would like to improve the reception in my truck. Has anyone tried those "FM amplifier" type things? Or is there a replacement antenna I can bolt onto my truck? Thanks! I've only had the radio for a day, but driving around last night the HD was cutting in and out. Quite frustrating."

I suggested, he mount a roof-top dipole (one guy, had it in his back seat), but he needs to watch out for low-lying bridges, toll booths, and car washes ! :D

SUPERCASTER... You know that you’re coming dangerously close to the “antics” of 700WLW... GOOD!

Hippo, SUPERCASTER, et all,

I hate, to give these guys the attention they crave, but take a look at the "other" board, before this thread is gone:

"Things that make you go HMMM.." :D

Well BM (a.k.a. autopaint-1), remember this infamous post, of yours:

How did you know, if I was adopted/illegitimate, or not - now, all your little buddies, get to see, what an amazing guy you are ! Too bad, you can't delete this post, as you do every anti-IBOC post/thread. LOL ! :D

Ok I'll admit it, that's funny. But there are no new antennas under the sun. Loops, ferrite rods, longwires, dipoles, monopoles, they all date back to the earliest days of radio. And every radio, analog or digital, including the wi-fi in your 'puter or pda (which is radio after all) requires one of 'em.

700... I need you to give me some background (and maybe a briefing on the past “dramatics”) because I have never visited “the other site” ... In fact—I have no idea what it is. SHOCKING—I’m not the obsessed anti-IBOCer that some may credit me for. This is the ONLY radio site I’m signed up at... For goodness sake—ONE IS ENOUGH!

So, in words that will keep the “mod” happy... What things will make us go HMMM? Could you lend me your Captain Crunch decoder ring on this one?

OMG... Did you possibly post a link to SUPERCASTER’s humorous contribution over there—raising BN / autopaint-1’s cholesterol count a few more points... You big mean software writer you

The thread was moved to their, "Off Frequency", Board... no, I didn't post anything over there, but they seem to be very concerned, about what is happening on this board, but I am not allowed to post a link, or mention the name of the site. No big deal... thanks.

My car reception with my JVC KD-HDR1 in dash player/receiver gets great reception here in the Dallas-Ft.Worth Metroplex !

I'd like to say that I've heard a lot new things on songs that I've heard before, but, I don't listen to FM Classic Rock Radio, becasue I disdain their narrow, overplayed "AM" Style Playlists.... But, I have heard on an HD-2 stations that plays NOTHING but The Beatles, a Paul McCartney song that has new life to me beacause of HD Radio.
That song is "Goonihgt Tonight". The bass riff that Paul lays down on that song is just awesome in HD! The fulness I never heard before on regular FM is remarkable!

HD Radio can be fine tuned with each station. And some do it better than others.
But it's a learning curve, and those stations that strive for excellence will get there. Those other stations that accept less, accept...less.

No system is without it's faults, .... but I do appreciate all of the "UP" sides to HD Radio ! ! ! I will not concentrate on the negatives, as others here have taken up that baton with great enthusiasm!

I can only hope as HD spreads, and it's spreading.... that someone, somewhere, will get the balls to do something in Rock, other than the tired, old Classic Rock Routine. ;D

Too bad, you do not like Classic Rock - WABC AM, has brought back 60s/70s Saturday-Night Oldies, along with supporting Web blogs - visit their Web site, and see, how popular it is ! The only thing that is spreading, about HD Radio, is the gap in consumer interest, versus XM, Sirius, podcasting, and Internet Radio (look, how interest in HD Radio, is taking a tumble):

1) http://www.google.com/trends?q="hd+radio"

2) http://www.google.com/trends?q="hd+...,+xm,+sirius,+podcast&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all

"What kind of digital radio are listeners searching for?"

'What a cool analysis Google now provides via Google Trends. It's what folks are searching for - and we can assume that search is a representation of interest."

http://www.hear2.com/2006/10/what_kind_of_di.html

Not, searching for HD Radio ! :D

Come on 700, even you can't claim that nothing is "spreading about HD". The number of stations grows every month. And the number of radios/tuners/receivers has increased tremendously in the last few months.

You lose all credibility when you say there are NO advances, when clearly there are. Is the race won yet? Of course now. But it sure as hell isn't lost! Want someone to take you seriously? THEN SAY SOMETHING SERIOUS!
