THINGS YOU DON'T LIKE ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE STATION

Well I'll tell you one thing I don't like & I saw it on All Access today. Sam Stevens is gone from WCTK after 11 years! I guess someone having to leave was a given since the new PD was going to be doing an airshift, so regardless of who he replaced I'd be posting this, but I find it very sad. Sam is one of the most natural, non-phony, regular guy jocks in the market & this is a loss for the station. It won't make me stop listening but I damn sure hope this doesn't snowball into another stream of exits from the station. The job situation in almost any field is rough, but radio continues to be the one business that eliminates the best people.

My favorite station is WBRU and for the most part they got it right. My second favorite is WPRO, they need a locol guy in the evenings. Ralphie voice tracking just doest cut it, its just painful to listen to. I guess what I am saying is local talent, local talent, local talent!

I'm not surprised that if any jock had to be let go it would be Sam. He's been there the longest which is a money factor and was doing only a two hour shift. On the other hand he was probably one of the ones who busted his butt multitasking during that last year when the station had no PD so this is a boot in the butt so to speak. It's too bad they're requiring the new PD to work an airshift although they must figure if they functioned without a PD for a year there's no reason why the new one can't find time to at least track it. Not the first Providence jock of late to be let go to make room for an on-air PD. It happened at both PRO-FM and HOT 106.

My favorite is NPR too. I switch back and forth from Boston to 1290. I wonder, since they are dependent in part on the listeners donations, if Terry Gross was being canned and lots of contributers called the stations to complain... would it have more weight than on a commercial station when a beloved host/jock is told immediately after the shift, "That was your last show..."

Actually it happened at Hot 106 and Lite..not PRO-FM, but same PD so same difference.

So it doesn't seem like Hall is that innocent when it comes to letting people go. And if you check out Jerry Del Colliano's latest blog he got an e-mail from a Clear Channel employee who says more firings at Clear Channel and possibly Citadel to come over the next few months. We shall see. Fourth quarter begins in less than a month.

We constantly say there's nowhere else to cut at most Providence stations but everytime we do, they find ways to cut so I wouldn't be surprised to hear the hits just keep on comin'.

Believe it or not there is plenty to cut. We or I wont like it but there is a lot. They could nix Geo and Kim and put syndicated stuff on. Same for the afternoon. HJY also, they could cut Paul and Al and possibly Charles. SNE studios are already a roach motel but cuts could hit CTK and 105.1. I dont see anything like this happening to BRU, its owned by Brown and on air talent is from the student body, thats why they are tops on my list.
