THINKING OF MIKE SELDEN 10 YEARS LATER

More death anniversaries...Radio Legend Mike Selden left us 10 years ago on March 11, 1997 at age 52. Fans will remember his shuck-and-jive approach, and his uncanny ability to "hit the post." He also was the master of double entrendre, and knew exactly how far to push the envelope without getting in trouble. Mike was truly a master of the whole DJ process. And he lived the life of a local celebrity, along with all its spoils and excesses...and ultimately paid the price for it all. We lost him far too soon, but the folks that knew him say his candle blew out long before he left us. Very sad. But it was great seeing him finally inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame last year. I don't know of anyone who deserved it more.

And who can forget the "GREAT RACE" of 1974 when Selden and Chapman went opposite ways around the world. I heard Ron was designated to win (kinda' like Fritz Von Erich would designate winners in 'rasslin matches)....but Mike broke the rules and got back first!

Gotta love that!

In regard to Selden winning the Great Race: When he got on board the flight that would take him back to Dallas, if the plane arrived at the appointed time, he would have lost. Selden spoke with the pilot, and the pilot was a KVIL listener. Selden asked the pilot if he could bring the plane in a few minutes earlier, and the pilot did so. That's what made the difference...
