Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life"

It's odd enough that B98.5FM started adding this song, but what even more odd to me is that while Star 94 leaves out the vamp after the lyric "when I'm with you I feel like I could die and that would be alright", B98.5 plays the entire vamp uncut. Its time for Star to lighten up and quit being so conservative, because who knows if B98 will start adding the REAL version of Tonic's "If You Could Only See". Just something odd I noticed.

The fact Star plays Feel Good Inc...or at least tries to play it is amusing. Nothing like hearing a hook, edited together, 16 times in a row.

Way to have your finger on the pulse guys...way to go.

Tomorrow, Star will begin using a new liner:

"Star 94, Always #1 For Today's Edited Hit Music (Except Rap), and Home of the Chopped-Up "Rick Dees Weekly Top 40" and "American Top 40" with Ryan Seacrest, Which is Also Shredded and Full of Special Requests that Replace Many of the Songs on the National Charts. Star 94!"

I hear Star is also coming on strong for the title of "#1 Station for Listening at Work," and (don't tell anyone who told you this folks) may have the exclusive franchising rights to Star Jones' Gutbuster Buffet and Drive-Thru Gastric Bypass chain.

I will protect my sources, so don't ask!!

That has got to be the worst thing I've heard them do. It is bad enough when they butcher other songs, but this one goes above and beyond. I really don't understand why they even bother with that song.

When the song was a hit in 1997, many radio stations were uncomfortable with the references to "doing crystal meth", so many radio stations played a version with it edited out. I am assuming Star 94 is playing the same version they played since '97.

The song was played on B98.5 the other day, and the crystal meth references were intact. B98.5 added the song during their annual October rotation.

Star 94's owner is Jefferson-Pilot Communications, a subsitiary of an insurance and financial serivces company (currently being sold to Lincoln Financial), and the manangers and shareholders tend to be conservative-minded. Plus, Star's GM has been there since the WKXI/WQXI-FM (easy listening) days.

Also, Star actually tends to serve the older crowd, rather than the traditional CHR 18-34 audience. (B98.5's core, as is AC in general is 25-54).

Go figure.

Even Third Eye Blind admits that its basically a huge joke that this song ever started playing on commercial radio.

Basically, all of the lyrics are filled with not-so-hidden innuendo that just happened to slip by most censors when the song first came out.

That being said, almost every radio station I've ever heard gets rid of that vamp. Its more unusual that a station would play that part, instead of leaving it out, at least in my experience.

It's a JOKE to call them a Top 40 station. To NOT play songs in a national countdown show is ridiculous. To edit the Gorillaz song to the point of a repetitive hook is hitting an absolute low in "playing it safe". Hey guys - if you're THAT SCARED that someone will be offended by a black man rapping - DON'T PLAY IT!!

Back in the early 90s, Star used to play "The Power" by Snap, but with the rap part edited out. But the rap part was the most significant part of the song to the point that without, it wasn't the same.

At least Star isn't as bad as the former Star 100.7 in San Diego. The former Star would play "Time" by Hootie & the Blowfish with two verses cut out.
