The RIAA's broadcast flag will affect any digital broadcast. One of the satellite services had a receiver for a PC that allowed saving songs to the hard drive. It's gone.

The RIAA has expressed concern about the SIRIUS S50 portable unit. They don't like the fact that it records. They fear someone will hack it and allow downloading of stored music. In their eyes it's not much different than illegally downloading music and use it like an MP3 player.

I wonder if the broadcast flag could disable existing receivers.

This seems a little foolish to me, since none of the digital systems are very high quality. I doubt anyone would notice a difference between a digital recording of a signal or a recording of the analog output.

The real problem might be the further encoding via MP3 of the already cascaded encoding of an IBUZ signal. Is it worth the disk space to record cascade encoded material to a .wav file?
