This goes back a few weeks...

Folks...

When I listened to the format flip of the buzz to the wolf someone posted it sounded like they switched the power on high. The sound was staticky and just flat and then just changed and was completely clear and loud. I think someone mentioned they adjusted the processing and thats what caused the static to go away. Can someone clarify if this is the case or did they truly increase the transmitter power to eliminate the static?

Thanks.

It was likely the audio processing, nothing to do with transmitter power.

Talk audio processing is set up very different than music audio processing. It is likely that management didn't tell engineering about the upcoming change and was unable to take the necessary steps to accomodate the music on 100.7.

Thanks

No, the audio has nothing to do with signal quality on FM. It can do a (very) little with AM.

In this case, it's simply the audio that is sent from the studio to the transmitter.

Maybe that explains why for the first few hours every other song was out of phase because somebody wired one of the CD players backwards.

As far as processing settings - that's managed by Entercom's corporate director of engineering. The local guys don't touch it. So it could have been stored as a preset in the Optimod in advance, but was tweaked after the change was made.

They had a problem with some of the songs being recorded out of phase. It took several hours for them to correct the problem. Out of phase songs on the air will sound weak and distant.

Those who read Clay's column will note that he mentions the Buzz --> Wolf flip and that engineering knew nothing about it until the last minute.
