This is what you wanted?

So after all the JACK trash talk, what did you get? The slogan could be "JACK.. without the new wave, 90s or today". In other words, a tighter playlist of predictable songs... most of which were on JACK anyway.

I'm sure Mayor Koch enjoyed Little Red Corvette.

It's not terrible, but I liked JACK... bring it back!

Man, oh, man ... as the Daily News says, quote, "The honeymoon lasted about 30 minutes ... New York's a tough town."

Uh, was there any doubt as to what the format was to be? I think not. What did you expect, "Freebird" to start, maybe some AC/DC? Oh, how about some Joan Jett? Lynard Skynard. Maybe some Def, some Diddy, too. And Snoop?

Wow. Tough room, too, I'd say ...

"I Love Rock 'n Roll" would fit. "Sweet Home Alabama" and "What's Your Name" would fit. "Highway to Hell" would definitely not fit.

In plain English, CBS-FM ignores the legacy of Musicradio WABC and Hot-Rockin' Flamethrowin' Z100.

I would simply say that people need to "clue in". Time sums everything pretty well. The world, the country, the advertising community, all have changed. I don't see what the issue is with what this station plays. I'd suggest that those who want doo-wop 50's music invest in Sirius or XM. It's like everything in life....room must be made for the "next generation". No you don't have the exact radio legends on that station, but you now have a crew who means something to those of us in our 30's and 40's.

Uh, and why should they be concerned with anyone else's legacy but their own? Z-100's legacy isn't up to CBS-FM to do. Let Scott Shannon go back there to do it.

My fear was they'd hire him at CBS-FM.

I think, with the exception of Bill Lee, they do serve part of the WABC legacy, with tweaks. Lee has already worn on me with the hip to the jive rhymin' stuff that he did at 'KTU.

Yeah...Joan Jett. It's a "Greatest Hits" station, no one has mentioned CBS-FM as a "Rock & Roll" (or oldies) station ... yet.

This format will do. Its liveable, likeable and has all the old jingles. Some old faces are there, and to me, some new ones too. The playlist will shape itself. The stations 8 hours old. Even in its first few hours its better than that cold dead jack sound. Its vibrant, friendly and familiar, with an offer of... Try this... its sorta like what you like, just a little newer." As a matter of fact while we were listening to the old CBS-FM we were aware of some of the newer songs that werent bad in "small doses" because they were melodic and had a nice hook. We'll adapt.

Also to note that in 1972 and onward, CBS FM played music that was NEW then, too... "Future Gold"... Its all similar sounding and familliar.

The station is GOOD.

I have to listen to the internet Stream. It sounds very good now BUT. Not sure about the FM Dial but the internet Stream has been Commercial FREE. is it the same on Radio? How long will CBS-FM be Commercial free?

Today at the top of the 6PM hour, I heard Ziggy do a promo for Geico and announce that they are 'sponsoring this hour of music". A clever idea that's been executed on Jack many a time...

Is this because they kept the reverb off?

As a current imaging voice guy and jock in the 60's and 70's I gotta tell you the opening montage gave me shivers to remember how really great and compelling radio can be. This is audio "show-biz" and somebody there "gets it" Sure we're (a lot of us at least) old radio dinousaurs, but the positive flow, and good feeling vibe of the revived CBS-Fm should stand as a benchmark for other companies in other markets to do the same..Don't call it oldies, don't call it (fill in the blank with useless moniker) but DO radio as it should be done with people communicating between the songs, and seize the audience with localized flavor to seal the deal...

I only wish I could have been involved in this one. It sounds really good.

And remember if CBS-FM is EVERONE's second favorite station..they will be a solid NUMBER ONE!

Great post, Jeff ... and thanks for being here.

You're right about the montage and as a follower of your v/o work ... you would have been an outstanding choice (and voice,) as well for CBS-FM.

Maybe you just missed the memo from Dan Mason :-\

From what I recall, "Future Gold" began in early 1973 and was a result of some nervousness on the part of advertisers as to the viability of oldies.

The point of mixing compatable currents is often overlooked by those who anaylized what went wrong with the format.

Simply put; Future Gold did not damage the format, it was frequently #1 from fall '89 through 1992, and if used correctly, it would have continued to provide a gentle transition as time went by.

Some months back Don K Reid appeared on Jory Reynolds' WOR show and pointed to the fact that up untill 1990 WCBS had incorporated selected songs from the previous decade, at that point he was told by management that this would not occur with 1990s material. I did hear some currents untill 1992, after that, time froze.

One of the arguments against the inclusion of 1990s currents was ofcourse the rise of hip-hop, however there were/are many good mainstream hits that would fit and there isn't any need to worry about the hip-hop audience as they don't seem to be interested in "oldies" of that genre anyway.

Eventhough the motives for the return of oldies are probably have more to do with how audiences will be measured in the immediate future (PPM), It's good to hear them back.

Scott Shannon has been with 95.5 PLJ for 15 years and is content to remain there. Besides, he works for Citadel now.

Like setting a CBS-FM shotgun jingle to a WABC logo. That shotgun was being used before the Jack flip -- I'm surprised ABC never sued CBS over that.

CBS-FM was playing "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" in the morning show today.

OK, but how about AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long"? It was a crossover hit thanks to the film "Maximum Overdrive" - and a good video on MTV helped for the cause, too. Hell, one time I heard 106.7 play it! Yes, WLTW, I am not lying!

"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" in the morning show? Not unless you're a music-intensive rock station.

CBS-FM sounded Oldies in its first hour, Classic Rock last night and Classic Rock this morning...

Poor Joan Jett... [Other than grabbing some “glitter”] WHAT did that lady ever do to deserve all this bluster about a classic hits station in it's infant hours of broadcasting? F.W.I.W. – I LOVE "Rock ‘n Roll" - and "Hit Me..." also]... Isn’t that song somewhat emblematic of the “Hot Hits” CHR return in the early 80s? It hardly seems out of place in CBS-FM’s scheme of things, and would not at all induce me to hit the “next arrow” on my internet audio player.

I can’t say that about the likes of “Chapel of Luuuv” [by the Southern Bra Girls] for the billionth time :D

I am not disagreeing with the people who want their 50's music back but most of us are looking at this from a perspective of folks who have worked in the business. According to this article, most (not all) of the people polled like the new format. From a personal point of view I love 60's & 70's music (the 50's were a bit before my time) so I love this new format. I have relocated to the Boston area and CBS is definitely playing a wider range of music than Boston's classic hits station (105.7 WROR) which has a very limited playlist. Again, I can sympathize with those of you who want more 50's mixed in, but in this environment it is not goiing to happen. Let's just be happy with what they have given us, it is better than Jack. Tell me if you agree with this article. David Hinkley who wrote this colum is a respected columnist from the N.Y. Daily News.

Ah, yes... good old 106.7 "Not-So-Lite-FM." I used to love the station, but then they started playing a lot more new music. Hearing "Let's Get Loud" by Jennifer Lopez followed by "Bohemian Rhapsody" turned me off. So, I turned off 106.7 and haven't looked back since.

Jack died, yippee!
