This isn't radio..but

it regards WXLV TV 45...now on my list as the worst TV station on the face of the earth...its a few min before the superbowl and we find out last week that they have NO HD SIGNAL on the TW cable tier...rendering our HDTV kindof pointless right now..even though watching the playoffs on WGHP and WFMY in HD was great!!! the analog channel has a noticable audio/video lag..its very annoying and its even present in commercial breaks.

/rant.....

WXLV has been running a crawl on the screen all weekend directing people with complaints about this to contact Time Warner Cable.

I can tell you that the local management of Time Warner cable seems to have a policy of not allowing anything done by the local stations onto their system unless one of the following applies:

1) It is deemed "must-carry" by the FCC -- HD channels are not currently required as "must-carry" unless a station is only broadcasting digitally and otherwise would fall under the "must-carry" rules.

2) It is produced by one of the market's VHF channels and carries something unique and not duplicated by their analog signal. In WXLV's case, the HD channel duplicates the analog channel 100%, so TWC has no interest in giving it any of their precious bandwidth.

We can all wish the local cable management was a bit more receptive to the needs of their viewers, but we have to live with what we have.

Interesting, and thanks for that tidbit of info...I've seen battles in other areas on the vs HDTV deal as well...even though nobody at our rather packed home complained about it not being in HD, they did complain about the video and audio being out of sync,..most notably at the beginning when stevie wonder was doing his thing...my real gripe was the a/v sync...which all viewers would have noticed (unsure about the HD viewers) especially during one of the most watched sport events of the year

I don't know much about HDTV, but couldn't you have just plugged in some rabbit ears and gotten signal enough to watch it in HD?<P ID="signature">______________

I was surprised to see the comments posted above. Unless I really got off track on this one, the truth is that Time-Warner *wants* to carry the HD signal. The problem is that Sinclair Broadcasting is trying to get cable companies to *pay them* to carry their HD signals. The "crawl" is a deliberate scam to put pressure on T-W, totally failing to disclose that T-W would love to open a channel to the ABC HD.

What scares me is to see that people don't know it!

Yes---TMC certainly has nothing against carrying the HD signals of UHF stations such as WXLV. In the Charlotte DMA, TWC has the HD signals of WCNC (36), WCCB (18), WJZY (46), WWWB (55), WTVI (42), and WUNG (58). They also carry WCNCs "Weather Plus" subchannel and multiple subchannels of WTVI and WUNG. The problem is SINclair who has had problems with cable systems all over the nation because they insist that the cable companies pay extra for their HD programing.

Sinclair is one of the worst licensees I've seen. It's pretty sad when they leave up a crawl for an expired weather watch 15 minutes after the fact, blocking the network's lower third graphics. What's even worse is when you can look up the station's number in the phone book, choose the menu option to page though the company directory, look up the number for Master Control, then call the op and complain.

At least it got the damned crawl off the screen.

And what's with their HD arrangement? They make the first HD subchannel an SD version of the analog programming, and then on the second cubchannel, they put the HD, or a (very nice) upconversion of the analog. Only problem is, you have to remember to turn to 45-2 if you want to watch something in HD. Plus, their upconversion at the local level cuts off a good portion of the top and bottom of the frame to make the picture wider. It looks terrible.

I have to say, the best executed HD signal I've seen is still WDBJ-DT from Roanoke. Local upconversion is amazing, network HD programming is given a good amount of bandwidth, and the second HD channel has alternate entertainment programming during the day and primetime, with reruns of the 11p newscast overnight. Plus, a home-brew weather channel (just their slides and NOAA weather radio).
