Quote: Chill with Chris Botti is the perfect addition to our Saturday evening line up.

Dave Kosh, WJZZ, Atlanta DMA 9/ Metro 11 , Sat 10-12mid

You can't argue with success, the numbers speak for themselves. Chill with Chris Botti has become more than just a show WJZZ airs from 10pm until 12 midnight on Saturday nights. It's become a lifestyle event. Listeners have emailed me to invite me to their "Chill" parties (Martinis & Tapas) on Saturday night, while they listen to "Chill with Chris Botti". I've attended 4 so far and had a great time hanging out with our listeners. They're usually P1's with a high degree of appreciation for the opportunity to hear something new and hip. Congratulations to Chris, he's tapped into the very thing that brought listeners to this format to begin with, fresh new music they can't hear anywhere else.

WJZZ

A25-54 went from a x.x AQH share (4,100 AQH) in the Fall 04 book to a x.x share (x,xxx AQH) in the Spring 05 book.

A35-64 went from a x.x AQH share in the Fall 04 book to a x.x share in Spring 05.

During the time slot of Saturday 10p -12 mid, WJZZ moved up from #12 to #7 in the market.

Mike Vasquez , KIFM, San Diego– DMA 26, Sat 10-12Mid

A35-64 looks awesome! Chill with Chris Botti pulled a x.x and is in 2nd place behind N/T KOGO – we’re the #1 music station Saturday nights from 10-12Mid.

Michael Joseph. Program Director, KOAS, Las Vegas, DMA 51/Metro 38, Sun 10-12 mid

All I can say is 'We knew that Sundays were a good time for us but wanted to offer 'Chill' to a larger audience. Since moving the show to Saturdays 10-Mid the response from our audience has been overwhelming. They love it! Thanks for providing us with such a great show!
KOAS

A25-54 went from a x.x share Sun 10-12mid in Fall 04 to a x.x share during Chill with Chris Botti Sun 10-12p in the Spring 05 book.

SANDY COLLINS,WLQT/WDSJ, Dayton, DMA 56/ Metro 58, Sat 8-10p

We're thrilled with Chris' success. We’re considering running the show all 5 hours!

Chill is so unique, so fresh... like the format, it's kinda hard to explain!

It's a perfect Saturday night show... great for everything from relaxing

at home with a good book to setting the mood at a get-together.

Very hip! Congrats!

A18-49 went from a x.x AQH share in Fall 2004 to a x.x AQH Share in the Spring 05 Book.

Yawn.......

I think the 1 thing we can all agree on is that things in other markets don't always work in Phoenix

Hey guys, as CHILL already knows, I am a proponent of this. But I thought that I would fire the warning shot of the wet blankets that will swarm this post:

A specialty show does not make a format!

There I said it. Others will pile on, but at least we got it out of the way. With that being said, these daypart rating sucesses are promising. I hope it continues to grow and make it's way to Phoenix. Thanks for sharing.

> CHILL FORMAT IS A SUCCESS !!

Sounds more to me like one "Chill" program is a success. One program doth not a format make. This show would probably work as a Saturday night show on KYOT but I don't think Phoenix has the demographics for a "Chill" format 24/7, at least not yet.

Wet blankets? Here at Chill-Info.com, we really enoy the updates.

Actually, with the numbers it is pulling in other markets, it probably wouldn't be too much of a risk for KYOT to plug it in Sun 10p-12a.

I don't see why it would be a risk. If a AAA in Tucson could plug in chill every night from 11pm, to 1am, why couldn't a jazz station in PHX?

Are we splitting hairs or riding the short bus?

please let me clarify..."it probably wouldn't be too much of a risk for KYOT to
plug it in Sun 10p-12a" - To me it means that slot isn't sacred and putting "CHILL" on for a few hours wouldn't be a radical decision.

For goodness sakes. When you ask your mom if it's ok to play Nintendo and she says, "It probably wouldn't hurt if you played for a while", do you tell her "Ma, video games don't hurt me. Can you get me some Capri Sun and a Ding Dong?"

Considering the overall 6a-midnight numbers at WQCD in New York, I don't think the audience digs a steady diet of New York Chill.

I've heard the Botti show, and it's not bad for a Sunday night kinda thing.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: THIS JUST IN...NO MORE CHILL @ CD101.9

WQCD 101.9 in New York has just dropped ALL CHILL MUSIC and is back to its Smooth Jazz format. Even though they were up slightly in 12+, they were down 25-54.

> > CHILL FORMAT IS A SUCCESS !!

You are posting about a Chill program, generally on the air in the daypart when the fewest number of people are listening of the entire week. PUR on Saturday night is around a 3.0.

IMO - WQCD SHOULD HAVE DROPPED THE SMOOTH JAZZ FORMAT COMPLETLY AND GONE ALL CHILL. LIKE MOST RADIO PROGRAMMERS, THEY'RE AFRAID TO TRY ANYTHING NEW AND COULDN'T GO ALL THE WAY. I WOULDN'T WANT TO TUNE-IN IF I KNEW I'D STILL HEAR THE KENNY G TYPES IN MY CHILL MIX. ALL OR NOTHING. ..THERE'S GOT TO BE A SEPERATION. THERE'S PLENTY OF NEW MUSIC OUT THERE THAT CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS 'CHILL'.

Emmis is one of the best companies insofar as programming is concerned. Th4ey invented sports talk on a 50 kw station in NY, which took gots and money. They have innovated within the realm of possibility often, and their radio president is a programmer.

There is plenty of music. There is plenty of music to do an all-tango station in NY, too. But there are not plenty of listeners.

If that's the case then the format is appealing more to either (1) kids or (2) older listeneres. I suspect the latter.

If the ratings are down in ages 25-54, then I don't blame WQCD for dumping the format. I don't know the circumstances since I'm not in NYC, but my guess is that if 25-54 numbers are down, then ad sales will follow, if they haven't already.

And who cares if there's plenty of music for the format? There's plenty of Blues music out there as well. I'd love a 24/7 Blues station but I know better. It just won't draw advertisers and wouldn't work on a non-comm either. It's a niche format that I like but most people don't. Therefore it won't happen.

"Chill" might work in the future, but it'll probably have to start either as a late-Saturday or Sunday night show on KYOT or on a low-rated rimshot. Don't hold your breath in either case. I'd love to check it out and judge for myself how good it is but it sounds like a niche format for the time being. If it didn't make it in NYC, then how could it work in Phoenix?

Timing is everything. I am truly amazed at how these things work out. Case in point: How come 96.9 K-Hits, Eagle and early Mix were not huge ratings successes, but The Peak is essentially doing the same exact format, with a bit of change in imaging, 5-8 years later and it is blowing up? Timing is everything and perhaps now is not the time for this format, but who says 5 years from now this might be what Smooth Jazz evolves into or a new format is born.

Also, it will take the right programmer and imaging (much like the Peak example) for this to work. Also, I would gather that the shareholders did not give it enough time to take hold in NY. To quote my friend mr_carlson, welcome to Consolidation Radio. Good day!

THIS IS WHY FM MUSIC RADIO IS DYING A QUICK DEATH. ..AND I'VE GOT SATELLITE RADIO. HAVING WORKED FM FOR YEARS, I HATE TO SEE IT KILLED-OFF WITH DINOSAUR MENTALITY. IT'S FUNNY TO SEE Y'ALL COME UP WITH THE SAME EXCUSES FOR NOT TRYING SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING; OUTSIDE OF THE CROSS-OVER FORMATS.

HIP HOP IS THE ONLY PROGRESSIVE FORMAT OUT THERE, IMO. THE CLASSIC HITS FORMAT, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS JACK (WHICH IS NOT THE FORMAT NAME - WE DON'T CALL IT THE EDGE FORMAT), IS GETTING ALL THIS ATTENTION; BUT IT'S NOTHING NEW. ..IT'S THE SAME MUSIC WE'VE HEARD OVER AND OVER; ONLY IN A MORE ECLECTIC MIX.

A MAJORITY OF THE STATIONS ARE PLAYING THE SAME ARTISTS. THERE'S A TOP 40 VERSION OF A RECORD, A COUNTRY VERSION, HIP HOP, ROCK, ALTERNATIVE, DANCE, SMOOTH JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL, ETC. I WANT STATION THAT OWNS THE FORMAT. ..A STATION THAT PLAYS EXCLUSIVE MUSIC THAT I WON'T HEAR ON ANY OTHER STATION IN TOWN.

OH WELL, TIME TO POWER-UP MY IPOD AND DOWNLOAD FROM MY FAVORITE INTERNET STREAM.

ENJOY YOUR BRITNEY SPEARS ROCKAPELLA MIX - BABY, ONE MORE TIME.

AMEN! That was exactly my beef with CHILL!
You should post that on the smooth jazz board. QCD tends to monitor these boards from time to time!

Re: THIS JUST IN...NO MORE CHILL @ CD101.9

PHOENIX, I totally agree with you. I was not making excuses, but only stating a fact of the current market. But, you and I are the minority. We GET satellite radio, we GET the iPod, we GET online streaming. And I don't mean GET in that we receive it, but that we understand it and are early adopters.

Realize that most of the general public are pretty much clueless when it comes to electronics. And realize that they don't care as much as you or I. If you have seen any of my earlier posts, I think that a format of Chill/Smooth Electronica music will work. But for most of the DUH General Public to get it, you will have to mix in a number of big name artists (Coldplay, Norah Jones, etc. remixed) to get the idea and understand it to be a success. Otherwise, the cynics will remind you that it is a niche.

I also agree with the posters who have said that you can't do it halfway. You have to include artists that are Alternative, not Smooth Jazz. The people that like Kenny G and Dave Koz (the only smooth jazz artists I know by name) like it and they like the same type of music. They don't like this new stuff, so don't mix and match it.

Read through all of the posts and understand, radio IS of the dinosaur mentality. That's what we are all saying. Also, I was just saying that today might not be the day for this format, but I believe that Average Joe will get it eventually.

I hate to see terrestrial radio go bad this way too! Take a chance.

Be remarkable. Be a Purple Cow.
