Do any of you have, or have had, a pet that would watch
something with fascination even though he/she had no idea
what was going on? I've had it five times.
My first dog, a Chihuahua named Nick, was crazy about football,
especially the Miami Dolphins when we lived in Florida (the Buccaneers
came along just as we were moving to Texas).
My second dog, another Chihuahua named Mikey, loved horse racing.
It's my tradition to watch the Triple Crown (especially the Kentucky Derby)
and he loved to watch those horses run (he saw two win the Triple Crown,
Seattle Slew and Affirmed). He was also fascinated with "The Bugs Bunny/
Road Runner Show." We would watch it on Saturday mornings; all I had to
say was "Hey, Mike, you want to watch Bugs?" And over to the TV he'd go,
waiting for me to turn it on. I remember one Saturday I had left the room
for some reason, and when I came back he was hypnotized by the Road Runner
and Wile E. Coyote. He also seemed hypnotized by the primetime Bugs Bunny,
Charlie Brown, and Garfield specials on CBS (which I wish they still had--and
I'm speaking for myself now).
I had a female cat, Alli (nicknamed Sissy), who was fascinated with University
of Kentucky basketball; her biological brother, Bart (named for Bart Simpson because
when he was a kitten he stayed in trouble), loved to try to catch footballs
and golf balls and I swear he knew who I was talking about when I'd mention Tiger
Woods. He also liked to watch the crawls on the morning local news shows. My dad
used to watch "The Young And The Restless" while he ate lunch, and they'd climb
up on a table in our sun room to watch it, too. What really stuck out was that, when
I was able to get it on live streaming, I'd watch WHAS Louisville's news; Sissy would
sit on the edge of the bed as if she understood every word, while Bart would sleep
through the whole thing. Yet they knew when it was time for it and would invariably
beat me to the computer.
My current cat, Dustin, will watch about anything I do; he, too, likes golf, although
he hasn't picked up on any of the names (he's named partially for his color and partially
for Dustin Johnson). He's also tried to catch the golfers' drives but has about given up.
I know this is crazy but I'd swear on a stack of Bibles that I'm not making any of this up,
and I don't think I'm alone. Do any of you have any similar stories? (I'm waiting to hear
if somebody's dog or cat watches "Jeopardy!".)
