This may sound silly, but ... pre-sets

You've heard the old adage, "60 (or whatever number of) channels and nothing to watch." This could be called, "18 pre-sets and nothing to fill them" on the car radio.
Actually, one easily finds enough pre-sets for FM. I'm looking for comment there, too, but my beef is not finding enough pre-sets for AM these days.
I'm old enough to remember when a radio might have five pre-sets and your choice probably was WWSW, KDKA, WCAE/WRYT/WTAE, WJAS and KQV, unless you were a Porky Chedwick fan and had WHOD/WAMO as an alternative.
I can fill three these days easily enough, as my work requires an ear on occasion to KDKA and KQV and my taste in music runs to WJAS when I can't find anything on a bunch of FM choices.
The other three are another matter. I've even plugged in KYW but that means I have a useless daytime pre-set.
For those who say "satellite, HD or CDs," I have a limited budget for (A), I'm looking for a portable (B) and there is a CD player I use on occasion.
Your thoughts?

I still have WWVA as a preset which goes back to when I was CE down there. Of course, until they get new towers I can't get much of a signal from them.

I also have 740 as a preset for when I drive up to the Finger Lakes to visit my daughter. That's the Toronto station. One would be able to hear them here in the daytime if WPIT wasn't on 730.

I've got

570 WKBN (comes in really well down here, and carries Cleveland Indians games
for whenever I get tired of laughing at the Buccos). Gives me a starting off point
at the high end of the dial, since I'm way out of Radio Disney's demo.

770 KFB - Frankie Day et. al.

1020 KDKA - rarely listen to them but is a convenient midpoint for a quick twist
of the dial to 970, 1110, etc.

1250 WEAE - probably the AM station I have on the most

1410 KQV - again, mainly because it is a convenient jumping off point at the far
end of the dial. Was 1360 in the days of Hoerth & Co. till I reached the point I
could not stand one more minute of Moneytalk.

I actually find I spend more time manually twisting the dial to sample. The digital signals
have pretty much rendered my scan button useless. Other than 770 and 1250 there is
really nothing other than proximity that draws me to that spot on the dial though.

My pickup's radio has six banks of six stations each. Fortunately, I can mix AM, FM, and XM in the same bank, so I can have one bank, for example, dedicated to sports, one to oldies, one for stations when I visit West Virginia, etc.

860 is a holdover from the WAMO-AM "Classic R&B" days. I find WAOB sufficiently entertaining that I've
never changed it.

970 Still tune in Jim Rome some days
1020 Not sure why, I guess I keep hoping they'll put something interesting on
1250 Occasional listens to Stan & Guy or the Drive (but not anymore)
1410 Was mostly for Notre Dame and WWI NFL games. Get those from XM as well.

Here are my AM presets. I didn't move anything around after 860 had their come to Jesus moment.

1 - 540
2 - 1020
3 - 1410
4 - 1320
5 - 620
6 - 770

FM, dial one:

1 - 95.3
2 - 96.9
3 - 102.5
4 - 103.1 (DVE has been at this preset ever since I've had a car. KVE knocked them out. Good job dudes.)
5 - 103.9
6 - 107.1

FM, dial two:

1 - 88.3
2 - 89.3
3 - 90.5
4 - 91.3
5 - 92.1
6 - 99.7

I also flip to 92.9 and 99.7 from presets 5 & 6. They're easier to pick up so they don't get a button.

In 1962 my presets were

770-----WABC
860-----WAMO
1020----KDKA
1360----WMCK
1410----KQV

Mine were simple on the old Pontiac Bonneville (a great car, BTW):

1-WWSW
2-KDKA
3-WTAE
4-WJAS
5-KQV

...just the five fulltimers of the era (the mid-60's). WMCK didn't make the cut because it was a goner once the night pattern kicked in.

In the early 70's my pre sets were
640 WHLO
800 CKLW
890 WLF
1000 Super CFL
1260 WIXY

Yes I lived in Cleveland and I only listened at night

I'm intrigued by all the choices, past and present. Thank you.

Since WAVL flipped to talk but did so with ABC News, AM 910 is a new choice on my pre-sets on two cars, one that programs up to 21 stations (but the way it is built it's better to go with four on each of three bands).

Four of my stations always are going to be governed by others' choices. My wife likes KDKA-1020, WSHH-99.7 and WORD-101.5, while a handicapped relative I drive with at times likes WWSW-94.5.

In the early Seventies my presets were:

910 WRNL
1140 WRVA
1380 WTVR
1480 WLEE "Big LEE"
1590 WGOE

I was living in Richmond VA. Later I added Q94 WRVQ and XL102 WRXL and dumped 1380 and 1590
