This town needs an enema.....

Seriously. Have you ever heard a market more in need of some staff changes (all groups, all stations) than Portland, Maine?

Isn't the problem that the best talent has been permanently chased out of the business by consolidation and voice tracking?

I have to agree, i'm currently here visiting family, such a cool city, great people, awesome food, beautiful parks, waterfront etc., but the radio is horrible...

i'm listening to "The Coast", "Billy Bush", "Rick Dees"..I know, weeknights, weekends, Sundays, Labor Day, you can't pay for Part Timers..but it's bad...imaging blows chunks too...

Can't disagree with the overall critique. That's what you get in a market where the number one requisite is to hire people on the cheap. But all things considered, the WJBQ morning show is quite good. The music sucks, but you can't have everything.

Ugh. It all sucks. Saying the JBQ morning show is the best of the bunch ain't saying much. The worst? The inexplicably award-winning Wolf morning show. Cliched and 2 boring people laughing at each other's inane banter. 4 hours of sheer tedium. Robin'zzzzzz Zzzzzzzzzzodiac ZZZZZzzzzzzzzone is a close second. How she got a job in radio (other than being formally married to the PD) is truly beyond me. Everything else? Tied for 3rd. Or tied for turd. Take your pick.

Underminer, what have you done today to create compelling local radio?

Cheers,

Wow...sounds like a lot of Portland radio haters. How about some educated solutions??? But like most of typical know-it-alls on these boards...it's just "bitch, bitch, bitch".

Most of these people are lucky to have jobs and are doing the best they can under the terrible corporate umbrellas they have looming over them.

Until corporate radio starts paying better (or selling to local owners who believe in treating people well) you won't hear much change.

If ANY of you were in that situation, you would be doing JUST what you are hearing. They can only do what they are told by the lousy consultants.

What's compelling to one listener is white noise to another.

Agreed, why sit there and throw stink bombs to people trying to do the best they can.
You feel you can do better? Do it!

WBLM did Beatles A to Z today, which was a decent listen! Except for the part where there was about 5 minutes of dead air in the afternoon. 100,000 watts of dead air! Herb would probably just tell you the silence was part of the end of the song. It was probably "The Gu" multitasking, though. You go, Gu!

Of course if you didn't like the Beatles, you listened to Frank, who has loosened up their playlist a bit lately. At least that's the way it sounds to this drunk! Mike Roberts still tells us who he is each time he cracks the mic though, so don't worry, they haven't completely forgotten the Frank formula!

One station that needs to be scrapped and started from scratch is WCLZ. Yes, AAA stations are supposed to be dryer than the driest martinis, but the airstaff has zero passion for the music they're playing. At least they come across that way. They sound bored. Maybe Randi K. doesn't want anyone else showing her up! An "eclectic" city like Portland deserves better! Hate to say it but the station was more in its element when Farid owned it.

That's all from the Beer-Nut Gallery for now...

Cheers,
OldPort Wino

Gotta agree with most comments on this thread. CLZ is awful, so are The Wolf and CYY mornings. BLM afternoon and evenings is well done for the most part and don't forget Steelzy on the Q. He's pretty damn good.

I'm pretty sure CLZ let all their station-specific talent go back in March. No Danielle, no random mid-day guy (one of several they've had since the big take over). It's not that the current on-air folks don't care about the product--it's just that they don't have time (well, except maybe Randi. I'm not really sure how clued into the music she is)! For a station that pushes local music, I can't think of the last time I saw one of their current on-air folks out and about at a local, non-station sponsored music event. Not exactly living the lifestyle (On the contrary I've often seen Citadel folks 'round town).

Despite this, I've heard rumors that their numbers keep going up. Of course, Coast's numbers keep dropping, so it's possible all those listeners just transitioned over to 98.9 from 93.1. Either way, I think it proves one of two things: Arbs are completely inaccurate OR only people on this message board care about "personalities." (It may also prove that you can never play enough Spin Doctors)

I think the folks at Saga plaza would tell you the second one. They might be right. I've accepted it.
