"THIS TV" Coming In November

From Broadcasting and Cable:

Viewers in Chicago, Milwaukee and several other markets will have some fresh entertainment options this weekend, as the digital channel This TV launches Nov. 1.

Two and a half years in the making, This TV is a joint venture between MGM and Weigel Broadcasting that taps MGM's 4,000-plus film library to program a 24/7, ad-supported digital network....

...While some might wonder about the wisdom of launching a channel amidst a chilly economic climate, others believe the timing might just be ideal...

...This TV launches on Weigel's WCIU Chicago and WDJT Milwaukee, among others, this Saturday, though some of MGM's 115-odd horror films may pop up a day early in a Halloween soft launch....

...Station partners will have the option to “time shift” the schedule, the This execs say, to slot in local programming like news...

...Weigel has had success with quirky niche channels airing aging programming, such as its independent “The U,” “Me-TV” and “Me-Too” channels in Chicago...

I put this in National rather than Chicago as "THIS TV" will eventually be nationwide. Well that is the goal anyway.

Any thoughts?

I hear it'll be on KDOC 56-3 in Los Angeles...

Where did you hear that? i hear KDOC 56.3 been broadcasting a sd simulcast of KDOC 56.1 since July after Bohemia Visual Music stopped airing on KDOC 56.3

Any word on the network coming on in Dallas-Fort Worth? We could sure use something like that hear along with Retro Television Network.

Tripinva is correct. I'm watching 56.3 right now and the EPG is indeed identifying the subchannel as This-TV. It's still just an SD simulcast of KDOC 56.1 as of right this second but not more than a week ago 56.3 was identifying as KDOC-SD2. I've kept 56.3 in my channel list in the off chance that BVM made a reappearance. 56.2 is still KDOC-SD1. Ever since Bohemia Visual Music quit airing back in July it struck me as odd that they would continue to air anything on 56.3 when it's exactly the same as 56.1 and 56.2. To my knowledge KDOC does not have anything on their schedule that even airs in HD (including Anaheim Ducks games). Talk about redundant overkill of a multicast. Then again, anything KDOC has done ever followed any form of logic.

Anyways, this is exciting to get a new subchannel that isn't another religious broadcaster or another Asian language sub. Classic monster movies just in time for Halloween! Yaaay! I hope this paves the way for Los Angeles' bigger independents to start adding content to their subs (KTLA, KCAL & KCOP I'm looking directly at you).

I hope that This TV will come to a market near me. I heard something about the original Outer Limits airing on it, and I hope I'm right, because I LOVE the original Outer Limits!

Supposedly they have a deal with 30 stations. We know of 3. Just a few more days til we know for sure! (Any thoughts on whether or not the Weigel sale to Schurz involved putting This TV on some of Schurz's subchannels?)

It's on WCWN-DT 45.2 in Albany...

Add another one, WRLH-DT 35-2 Richmond is going to air ThisTV 1a-7p, and air syndication, local news, and MyNetworkTV 7p-1a.

Interesting, you'd think they'd throw it on a subchannel

Yes.

Add WSYX-DT 6-2 and WRGT 45-2 to the list. Both are doing the same My/This arrangement that WRLH is doing.

Man, y'all are getting all these new sub channels. Down here in Mobile the only sub channels are 5 extra PBS stations (Good!) and about 8 extra religious stations (geeze!) They announced that RTN was coming here a few months back, but it never happened. Still showing weather radar on WKRG-2. I hope things start to pick up around here in the next few months.

WRGT, WSYX, and WRLH are all owned by Sinclair, so I wouldn't be suprised if more Sinclair-owned stations join This TV. The Sinclair-owned FOX station here in Madison hasn't had a subchannel since they dropped The Tube a couple of years ago, so This TV would be a perfect addition.

The eyes are instantly drawn to the filmstrip that forms the "i", which looks rather apropos for such a movie-intensive channel as This TV.
