THIS-TV Editing Standards?

Today, THIS-TV is airing "The Gallant Hours" followed by "Tora, Tora, Tora". Both are movies about WWII and specifically the war in the Pacific.

"The Gallant Hours" has the word "Jap" repeatedly edited out but "Tora, Tora, Tora" does not.

It is very disappointing to me that this type of political correctness editing takes place in a picture of historical importance but the real question is why one movie would be edited and the other not.

???

Well when you think about it, it's a moot point anyway because WHO calls the Japanese "Japs" nowadays anyway?

Cheers :D

Just a guess: This-TV neither requested censored or uncensored versions of the films from the distributor. The distributor of "Tora Tora Tora" did not edit for language, the distributor of "The Gallant Hours" did.

If you took Jap out of circulation, you'd kill off the best episodes of the Burns And Allen and Jack Benny radio shows :)

I'm guessing they use the old TV syndication tapes laying around that the distributors send them. ThisTV ain't exactly TCM as far as quality control of the movies they show. Some of them look rather dog-eared. Criterion Collection they are not!

I've noticed that the movies on THIS-TV seem to be getting better and more current.
When you've got 140 or so affiliates, you should be able to buy some of the better
movies.

Reminds me of when Channel 22 in Pittsburgh used to edit their Saturday afternoon Charlie Chan movies
for political correctness. In one case this meant that the solving of the case ended up on the cutting
room floor.

They've been shopping around lately. I agree, they are improving.

I don't know if it was deliberate or not, but I caught a couple minutes of "Elvira's Movie Macabre" the other night on THIS-TV and the audio was absolutely horrible. It sounded like the characters in the movie were speaking through tin cans.

Most of those flicks Elvira shows haven't been kept in the best condition if they were ever filmed with an ounce of professionalism to begin with. Elvira's fare certainly won't make Coppola lose any sleep.

Elivira's show is not produced by This-TV but is a syndicated show that is also syndicated to other TV Stations that are not affiliated with This-TV. And the movies shown on her show are in the public domain which means they aren't in the most pristine condition.
