This was odd

I was listening to the stream of True Oldies 850 WREF this afternoon and they aired a commercial for FAIRFIELDCOUNTYHELPWANTRED.COM what I found odd about the commercial is that it was the same exact commercial we were running for their sister site HARTFORDHELPWANTED.COM on WXCT more than 5 years ago. The only difference in the two commercial obviously was the fact when the job interviewer said "Where you from?" he said "New York" for the Fairfield County one and "Connecticut" for the "Hartford" one. I think it's odd to be running a commercial that's more than 5 years old.

I pick up on that sort of thing when it happens too.

I think it's odd to be reaching for disjointed links to an obscure radio station that's been as good as off the air for 5 years.

You're right! WREF has been on the bird since they were sold many years ago. The last time they were anything is when they were in Ridgefield when Bob Losprogato was there. Now it's owned by Berkshire and might as well be a computer locked in a closet.

WREF has averaged a 2.3 share 12-plus over the last year and a half - higher than a competing FM, WDBY, and much higher than WINE with a .4. Market dominator? No. Something? Yes, when you add it into what WLAD & WDAQ get.

It still doesn't excuse the fact that it's a computer in a closet. Piping in syndicated shows doesn't impress me. Local programming with live hosts who care about what's happening in the community is very important. Not some satellite feed from across the country.

As a live, local standalone it probably would have gone dark in this environment. I'm sure they'll be crushed to hear you're not impressed.

I did some engineering for WREF back in the day and it's a shadow of it's former self, for sure. Some years ago I was invited up to the Superjock party as a former co-worker was on 98Q. While I was walking around I came across a door with a WREF bumper sticker. I thought it was a joke so I opened the door. Well, there was a tiny studio running the bird-fed programming. Sort of sad, especially to someone who remembered the station as being a "real" station and not a satellator.

I too lament the loss of localization, but times are tight. Berkshire Broadcasting has tried as much as anyone to keep local AM viable with a local morning show and local newspeople throughout the day on WLAD. Some local independent broadcasters may make it through this recession better than the heavy hitters who couldn't stop partying like it was still 1999.

I know they couldn't care less about what anyone thinks. That's the corporate mindset. We wear suits so therefore we must know everything. It's this thought process that will eventually ruin radio.

Hey now! It hasn't been quite THAT long. Although it may as well be... :)

5 years ago this May DMG took ownership and it went Spanish AC when it was LMA'd to Hippolito Cuevas and Paul Nunez. Then they asked you to come back and relaunched the talk format in October 05. And then you signed a TBA in July 06. Then in May 07 is when Radio Cantico Nuevo took over. So it's been 2 years that it's been off. BTW isn't it time for the station to flip formats again? Most things on that station don't last longer than 2 years. The longest format on the station in the past 10 years was the talk format that Charlie launched in February 2002. It lasted until May 2004 when the station was sold. So It lasted 26 months.

If WXCT flipped to a business talk format (in English), would you have the frequency locked on all your radios once again?

MarcB: Learn to speak Spanish so we can put The Jay Clark Show on Radio Cantico Nuevo. If you don't, I'll have Cockroach put your first ever Jay Clark Show back on his web stream. ;D

Cockroach: Be at the ready! ;D You can be Cockroach. He can be Roach Clip or Rodent. ;D :p

Radio Cantico Nuevo isn't long for this world here in Hartford. A little birdie told me that Antonio and Helen Gois (owners of WLAT/WNEZ/WKND in Hartford along with WORC in Worcester) have put in a bid with DMG to buy WXCT.

Like we really need more radio Espanola in CT. What's next Portuguese radio stations? Then Asian, etc, etc. Heck, let every ethnic group have their own radio station. Bust open that AM band.
