"This Week In Baseball" E/I??

Watching today's (October 1st) edition of "This Week In Baseball", I noted that Fox was labeling the show "E/I".

Sure, there are sometimes segments on that show that provide young players with instructional tips on how to play baseball, but I don't think the show should get an E/I designation!

On the other hand, with the market for children's shows on over-the-air commercial television rapidly disappearing, networks may try to slap E/I labels on shows that are really "grownup" programs and have very little with which to give them an E/I label.

I also think some broadcast networks may eventually go to court to try to get the E/I regulations ruled unconstitutional. If they are struck down, I think ABC, CBS and NBC will quickly and completely exit the children's TV field, reduce their Saturday-morning TV schedule to two hours each, perhaps from 8 to 10 A.M. (for Saturday editions of their morning news shows), and strongly urge affiliates to produce local newscasts before (7-8 A.M.) and after (10 A.M.-12 Noon) the network morning shows. I think ABC, CBS, NBC and many of their affiliates would prefer to see their Saturday-morning schedules be wall-to-wall news, both network and local.

Are you kidding me?? Even TWIB in its Mel Allen halcyon days was hardly "educational", never mind the current half-hour Pepsi infomercial.

The current excuse for TWIB has always been E/I, at least here on WBRC-6 . . . And I'd argue that it isn't really an adult-geared show now, but MLB's attempt to copy what the NBA has done with Inside Stuff. They haven't succeeded, IMO.

Since Fox doesn't have a children's cable network partner to promote as ABC/CBS/NBC/WB do, they couldn't give a rat's butt about children's programming. To them, it's just 3 hours on Saturday morning that could be better used for infomercials.

Of course, Fox is probably only making money by "renting" the space to 4Kids. And, in my opinion, shows like "Mew Mew Power" and "One Piece" very hardly qualifies for E/I. As a result, Fox stations often make up for it on weekdays and Sunday with syndicated E/I fare of their own.

Where are those shows even on? Not in most Fox O&O markets, I know. Which begs the question: Why does the 4Kids deal even exist, as opposed to a deal involving the (mostly) live-action wildlife shows the O&Os run?

In the Tampa Bay area, WTVT ch.13, a Fox O&O, shows news and syndied E/I programming on Saturday, passing 4Kids to Hearst-Argyle's WMOR ch.32, which shows it on Sunday mornings, as they have their own E/I shows on saturday.

I don't think that This Week In Baseball is educational.
Why do they even force stations to do it if they make a joke of it?
What does the "I" stand for?

Supposed to mean "informational". That aspect probably fits TWIB, but it's in no ways educational.

Unless you're teaching kids how to enhanced their bodies, if you know what I mean ;)
