"This Week" Ratings Weak With Amanpour So Far

After two months, Christiane Amanpour's reign as host of ABC's "This Week" is off to a slow start. Last week, the show got 608,000 viewers, far behind "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation." Far enough, in fact, that it was the worst ratings for "This Week" in seven years. Not even newsworthy guests like Hillary Clinton and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could help a ratings spark.

I hate to say it, because I've always been an admirer of Amanpour's reporting. But IMO, those news specials and reports are her strength. Sitting behind a desk and interviewing...not so much.

And Jake Tapper was doing just fine.

The ABC-TV affiliate in Boston moved "This Week" from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, evidently to add an hour of news on a day when there is usually NO news. Even during the week, subsequent newscasts on most stations consist of repetitions of the same material as before. And on Sundays, there are no traffic reports, except for the bridges to and from Cape Cod. As far as the talking head shows are concerned, WCVB-TV previously had that hour to itself; now the Fox broadcast station has moved "Fox News Sunday" to 9:00 am.

No news in Boston on Sunday mornings? No overnight shootings, car wrecks, building fires, etc.??? And who can forget the all-important weather forecast for the next possible storm of the century (well, it LOOKED just like the blizzard of 78...) :D

OK, silly question time. Since I haven't followed the state of things going on with "The Week" what was the reason for the change in anchors?

Can you tell I watch very little ABC programming?

Amanpour even had her own self-titled weekly show on CNN on Sundays before the ABC deal.

The same reason the programming geniuses at ABC decided to replace Charlie Gibson with Diane Sawyer. Celebrity status.
Amanpour did make a reputation for herself at CNN as a tough investigative reporter. ABC thought she might be the perfect one to fill the anchor slot for "This Week." I am sure there were some ABC News veterans who were quite upset that the network went outside to hire an anchor for that show instead of promoting from within house.
