This year's 'How does Dick Clark look and when will he retire?' thread

Well, Dick Clark will come by later on for the 11:30pm to midnight eastern time portion of the program. So we'll find out later how he looks and how he's doing.

For now, Ryan Seacrest continues his world dominance by adding his name to Dick Clark's show. This year, it's 'Dick Clark's Primetime New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2010' for the 10pm to 11pm portion of the festivities. And he's done nothing more than talk about the weather, give us some 2009 tidbits, introduce a couple of musical numbers, and chat with streetside roving reporter Melissa Rycroff of 'Bachelor' and 'Dancing With The Stars' fame.

Melissa is certainly a pretty girl and seems comfortable in front of the camera. I can't imagine why they chose her, though, aside from capitalizing on her ABC/Bachelor/Dancing/rejection-on-tv moments.

Tonight marks Melisssa's 11th through 14th minutes of her fame. ;D

Melissa replaces country singer/former American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler as streetside reporter. Kellie is also pretty and did a good job last year. Kellie yelled alot last year. Melissa doesn't yell. But I'd rather have Kellie back.

Even without Kellie, we still get a healthy dose of Fox's American Idol on ABC. Kellie's season 5 co-contestant, Chris Daughtry, is performing live in cold Times Square with his band Daughtry. Nothing like promoting the hell out of tv's number one show on another network. ;D

Stay tuned after your late local news and Dick Clark will be here and we get to see Seacrest drop his bal....I mean....we get to see the big ball drop in Times Square. ::)

I agree, he actually sounds a bit rougher than last year.

But Jennifer Lopez isn't wearing much right now so it's ok. But she's not doing a great lipsynching job. Daughtry sounded more live than Jennifer although I don't know if he was or not.

Radio-Info, I realize this LOOKS like it's blogging but it's not. We're just discussing things. Happy New Year to all Radio-Info editors, moderators, techs, owners, board members and columnists. ;D

I didn't see it, but I heard his countdown was pretty messed up. He said the numbers out of order or something.

That happens nearly every year. Dick forgets a number as he is counting down but quickly corrects himself. A couple of years ago, there was a story that Dick's portion of the program including the countdown was taped earllier in the evening. If that's the case, it could also be a case of tape not matching live action. But, again, Dick manages to mix up his numbers every year since the stroke.

Overall, he was ok and he's really only on-air for maybe a total of 15 minutes up until 12:15. At that point, Seacrest moves into the studio, they talk about how cold (or rainy) it is, blah blah blah, Ryan and Dick complement each other, and then Dick disappears for another year.

Seacrest carries the show and Dick will be allowed to stick around for as many years as he wants. He and Seacrest co-executive produce the show.

I fired up the ole tele to catch Dick Clark tonight,To me he seemed to be ok,but some of his speech was slur, but he was alittle faster this time.I have to give him credit to keep it up.The music of corse to keep up with the times,is to much to be desire.Jennifer Lopez,Fergie, looks hot, but the tunes are not my taste,Colbie Caillat, was good and cute too.as I'm typing this post there is a 15 year old kid on the show, i did not catch his name. Selena Gomez ,the name is new to me,I DVR'd Fox,MTV and Carson Daley show, which I will check them out later.

yeah i set my dvr to record this show and guess what it did not record it im so mad oh its not the end of the world it will be up on youtube

Yes, he mixed up some of the numbers around 10-13. I know he's had a stroke, but doesn't he practice/have a card/something to help him with this? There HAS to be a way he can do this flawlessly, even on live TV.

But the little banter he and Seacrest did together in the studio booth was actually kind of funny. :D

That's OK. I don't think Fergie is lipsynching. But perhaps she should.

Its been quite a few years since I've watched the ball actually drop live on TV I'm usually at a club or bar much like I was tonight. I suspect that Clark's viewers are aging with him if not already older.

TV gets it. Understands it's viewers do watch other networks entertainment and sports programs. Heck, the night Charlie Gibson retired, Katie and Brian were part of the farewell piece. Never got the whole radio paranoia thing.

Assuming he's got a lot of viewers past 80; that's how old he turned on Nov. 30.

It's not so easy as you think for Dick being able to do the countdown. I too am a stroke survivor. I suffered basically the same kind of stroke that Dick suffered back in 1991. 19 years later, though my speech and motor skills are now pretty much up to snuff, word-finding and certain feeling (numbness) on my right side have been impaired. I know what Dick is going through. I do the weather forecast every morning for my non-comm FM in Dudley, MA (WXRB-FM). If you think I'm able to read the weather copy "el-perfecto", that's not a given. I make many mistakes in recording my voice (somedays are better than others). I record my voice on CoolEdit 2.0 several times. I make a few cuts a few deletions and then smooth it out to where it sounds like I'm reading it verbatum. Then I add a little small amount of reverb to make it sound a little more lively. Total time, about 15 minutes from start to finish, for a 25-30 second blurb. But I don't mind because I'm doing something I love, just like Dick loves doing what he's doing.

I hope Dick continues his New Year's Eve bash for many more years. For those of us who've had life changing illnesses, he is a inspiration to all of us. It takes a lot of guts to get in front of a worldwide television audience and do the best he can, in spite of his stroke. Happy New Year, Dick!

Happy New Year, everyone,

What was amusiong was the last couple minutes of the prime time telecast when Seacrest seemed to end up a couple minutes long on time and had to ad lib ALOT for the last minute or two before the credits rolled: "It's raining. It's cold." "Check out the crowds." "Let's see the ball. It's bright, it's shiny, it's big, just how I like my balls." I'm KIDDING, he didn't actually say that last part. :D

Also, around midnight, when Seacrest, JLo, her husband, and all of Daughtry were standing on the outdoor stage, JLo's hairstylist suddenly appeared onscreen to fix her hair when he didn't know the camera was on them. When he realized it, he ducked out quickly. ;D

Well to sum up after all of these postings and getting back to the thread Subject: The concensus seems to be that Dick Clark looked good and there is no estimate of retirement.
