thisTV launches in Phoenix

Quietly, channel 3.2 has begun airing today. The bug consists of the "this" logo, with "phoenix KTVK 3.2" under it.

thisTV was also supposed to start in Dallas today, but technical difficulties have delayed the launch there for a few days.

Very quietly. No schedule on AZFamily.com (just 3.1 and 61.1) or carriage on Cox.

And don't get overly excited. Mostly movies and a handful of 1950s sitcoms.

But zero infomercials unless you'll local affiliate inserts them in. You are right though, the movies run the gambit from really really bad to somewhat watchable. Don't expect a blockbuster to ever be shown. Lately they have been airing a lot of Vincent Price movies to prepare for Halloween.

I was telling someone offline that in general, the folks on this board (not just Phoenix in particular) seem to have an overly high expectation of the programming on thisTV. I see it as more of a poor man's RTV. The channel had humble beginnings in Chicago (WCIU, I believe) and has always been low-budget.

But as Robnoxious aptly pointed out, no infomercials. It's not an infomercial channel, a shopping channel, a Spanish channel, a religious channel or even a Spanish religious channel. It's strictly low-budget, mostly old movies.

When I first discovered thisTV was on 3.2, they were showing Moonraker. Truth be told, I'd never seen it before. Not exactly one of the better Bond movies, but it turned out to be the best thing that was on at the time IMO, so I went back to it. More choices = better TV. Also, because it is low budget, it's most likely low cost, meaning KTVK could roll it out quickly to their 15%-20% OTA audience without having to wait for cable coverage, as KAZT did with RTV.

Now if the .2 Network could only get their act together...

Right now I'd rate ThisTV better than RTV, including programming. The only thing that seems awry is pixilation on 3.2 when it isn't happening on 3.1. I find that very odd.

The movies do tend to be chestnuts but it is interesting, to me anyway, to watch movies with now-famous actors before they became famous.

Yeah, during the commercial breaks. The oddest thing I've ever seen, because when the show comes back on, it's fine.

...thisTV is also expected to be added to a KMSB/11 subchannel (of which there are none currently) in Tucson sometime in the next few weeks...

Makes sense - like KTVK, KMSB is a Belo station and the other Belo station in Tucson, KTTU, already carries Estrella TV on 18.2.

So, I wonder if Belo has plans for their other Phoenix station, KASW?

They seem to have fixed this now. So far, I think thisTV has been a nice addition.

Yeah, I haven't seen any in the last day or two either. Also agree it is a nice addition. Much better, IMHO, than RTV.

Looks like This TV will also be on KYMA 11.2 in Yuma as This TV new website list KYMA 11.2 on the local stations page, here's the link: http://www.thistv.com/station-selector

Can't vouch for their accuracy, as they don't list KTVK in Arizona. When last checked, KYMA 11.2 was running LATV. Given the area's substantial Spanish-speaking population, it doesn't seem a logical choice to switch to thisTV, unless they're considerably cheaper to air than LATV. Assuming, of course, that LATV is still operating. A check of KWBA 58.2 Sierra Vista-Tucson should verify that.

Sunbelt dropped LATV in most of its markets. I think KYMA might be the last Sunbelt station that has not dropped LATV in favor of This TV.

Hi! newbie here.

I was looking for the transmission start date for the This TV network and found this post.

I can confirm that at least as of today, "This TV" is being transmitted from KYMA's 11.2 sub-channel instead of LATV.

amigou,

Welcome to Radio-Info and thank you for the confirmation. Do you get thisTV on cable also or only over-the-air?

Sorry. I can't confirm this since I do not subscribe to cable.
