Those who say "..I don't watch TV !!"....

Today I was checking out the TV section on the www.city-data.com and there is a very active thread on there about those who make the claim "..I don't watch TV". One woman claimed that she not only does not watch TV ( or listen to the radio ) but makes an effort to actually stay away from both such as calling up hotels before she arrives and have them disconnected. Another poster claimed that he will NOT shop at any business that plays the TV and radio ( well there goes Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Lowes, HH Gregg and Sears right there ).

OK is it really possible to totally avoid 100% TV and radio in this day and ago? Not talking about the rich & famous but average people. Myself I just don't think its possible.

Internet? Well to go online one does have to look at a monitor and monitors do come with speakers..to me that is the same as watching TV only minus the channel selector and remote control.

I wonder if the MUZAK systems that grocery stores and restaurants use qualifies as radio.
There goes restaurants that have a sports bar like Applebees and Red Robin.

Sure it's possible to do it, but if it's one of the priorities by which you order your life, there ain't much else going on outside of that "avoiding broadcasting" thing. It sounds like it would be a pretty all-consuming effort to do "100%."
Even the Amish I've known come into contact with tv's and monitors, they just don't use them for background noise in their homes or workplaces.

The Amish somehow avoid TV and radio completely. So it can be done...with great sacrifice.

Yes but then how would any of those people make it to an internet site to report that they don't watch tv or listen to the radio? ??? :D

Except that Red Robin's on DMX and they have been for years. I know this for fact.

The restaurant I worked at in the 80s and early 90s,SIZZLER, uses MUZAK, I would switch from current hits to oldies and back then 80s hits.
as for the person mention in the thread that stays away from all radio and TV, must live like a hermit with ear plugs.

And you guys had it good back then, in the all-analogue days! Worst thing you had to worry about is the sound would get a bit more staticky than usual if the weather turned nasty, or if your reception site was in a less than optimal location. Nowdays, in the all-DVB era, the big burning query I often get is "will our signal come in today, or won't it?" ;o)

Of course, if/once they decide to go the all-disc or all-TCP/IP route, that too will likely become a moot point.....

I can't go without radio, but for 7 years, I went without TV about 95% of the time. I can't afford cable or satellite TV, nor can I afford to get the equipment for FTA satellite. Even if I could afford to get the equipment for FTA satellite, I'm not allowed to have a B.U.D. (Big Ugly Dish) where I live. I rely solely on OTA TV, and only in the last year, have I watched more TV. Since trying out DTV during the pre-transitional digital period, I found a little bit more to watch on TV. Living in the Chicago market, I watch subchannels:
Livewell HD on WLS-TV 7.2,
WTTW Prime on WTTW 11.2 (all primetime PBS programming), Create on WTTW 11.3 (DIY, craft, cooking, & travel lifestyle channel)
Mhz Worldview on WYCC 20.3
WWME-LD on both 23.2 (mapped from RF 39) & from WCIU 23.1/26.2 (the WCIU double mapping of WWME-LD on 23.1 & 26.2 is unnecessary, but Weigel Broadcasting claims they have a valid reason for it) (classic comedy)
WCIU on 26.1
WMEU-CA on WCIU 26.3/48.1 (again, the double mapping is unnecessary, and WMEU-CA hasn't gone digital yet on their low power station) (classic drama)
Ion Life on WCPX 38.3 (watch it from time to time, but the selection of shows are narrow, due to the station not spending money on the entire series of most shows)

As for regular channels, I watch CBS on WBBM-TV, and received this channel on channel 3, and now get them on channel 12 (mapped to 2.1).
NBC on WMAQ 5.1
ABC on WLS-TV 7.1
CW on WGN-TV 9.1 (this station will add Antenna TV in January on 9.2 (a cross between This TV & Chicago's MeTV & MeToo)
PBS on WTTW 11.1
PBS on WYCC 20.1 (this station also simulcasts an SD 4:3 version on 20.2)
Fox on WFLD 32.1
PBS on WYIN 56.1 (this station also simulcasts on 56.2 & 56.4, plus 56.2 is also a 720p HD channel, like 56.1, while 56.3 & 56.4 are widescreen SD channels, & 56.3 is a locally programmed PBS Kids Go channel)

"Even if I could afford to get the equipment for FTA satellite, I'm not allowed to have a B.U.D. (Big Ugly Dish) where I live."

Do you live in an apartment, or a housing area with an overzealous neighbourhood association?

I wonder if these people ever go to the movies. There's a picture and sound like TV. Also, if they can stomach the cinema what's stopping them from tolerating TV with a DVD or HBO?

I call it "Swiss Theory" as it's full of holes. ;)

This is how I believe the stars can get away by bragging that "..hey I dont watch the damn TV"..like the cast of HBO's True Blood telling some magazine not too long ago ( In Touch ) not only that they do NOT have HBO but they don't even watch TV at all, not even their own show.

Ah it doesnt wash with me. Seems strange for a cast member to say they don't even watch their own show from any source.

I'd say it's a generational thing. People 25 and younger seem to rely almost wholly on the internet and
mobile devices for their entertainment. Those of us in our 40's on the other hand cannot imagine life
without radio and television.

Aside from that the only time I've ever heard of hotels being asked to disconnect them was either for
sequestered juries, or marriage encounter weekends where the spouses are supposed to be focuses
on each other.
