thoughts for 06

ok here comes a new year and it marks my 10th year since being full time in radio..man time flies :)..some things i've seen change since 96..
1. christian ac has moved beyond the inspo sound of 1988 :)
2. despite that fact christian chr still has not gained any new ground..it still sounds like christian ac..
3. also despite that christian radio still only plays certain artists and will not touch others because of the fact that some 36 year old mom might turn off the radio..

so for 2006 i would like to see.
1. Air 1 come to baton rouge :)
2. point of grace break up :)...
3. an improved sound to the christian ac stations. the demo is changing. and a lot of teenage girls 10 years ago listened to everyrhing from stone temple pilots to marilyn manson to madonna..so why is the demo still stuck on light ac? will the demo ever change? as women get older dont you think their taste change?? do you really know of a 26 year old mom who likes elevator music?? my wife is now 24..just 1 year from the target demo and she doesnt listen to most of the stuff on christian ac..she prefers rap or dance music. yet there is no rap or dane music (christian ) on the radio?? thoughts?? will it ever change?? do you see any changes coming?? will klove get another 200 stations this year??:)

It's really less about artists, but more about songs. (although, in the "Christian format" where lifestyle plays a factor, artists are weighted more in the criteria).

"...because of the fact that some 36 year old mom might turn off the radio..."

That is because the 36 year old mom is in the heart of the AC Target Demo.

"...an improved sound to the christian ac stations."

Improved? Only by the target's standard I hope.

"the demo is changing."

Where? Are you thinking the demo is no longer W 25-54? Because that is still the case, and unlikely to change.

"and a lot of teenage girls 10 years ago listened to everyrhing from stone temple pilots to marilyn manson to madonna..so why is the demo still stuck on light ac?"

Because as women age, so do their preferences in what they want to hear on the radio. Plus, a 19 year old (teenager) would still just be 29 10 years later...which is in the target, but not at the center.

And music that itched my ears as a teenager...well... let's just say, doesn't so much anymore...for a variety of reasons. I'm in the target, but NOT quite the target. And because I'm IN radio, I must be objective...so I only use myself as an example for this thread. But AC radio sounds pretty good to my ears for the way in which I use it. (CDs I buy are not the same as stations I tune).

Again, radio is USED. We can't forget that.

"as women get older dont you think their taste change??"

Yes. Familiar becomes much more important in regards to songs on the radio.

"do you really know of a 26 year old mom who likes elevator music??"

No, but AC is not elevator music.

"my wife is now 24..just 1 year from the target demo and she doesnt listen to most of the stuff on christian ac..she prefers rap or dance music."

She is actually years away from the bullseye though...and so, when she is 35, I'd like to ask her a few questions about what is different than now.

"yet there is no rap or dane music (christian ) on the radio??"

Because rap and dance is NOT AC.

"will it ever change??"

Radio has changed a lot. It evolves through the years when it needs to, and when it wants to. (Rock was a risk back in the day...) Many ACs sound the way they do, because they have been successful. Until the success declines, well... don't fix what isn't broken.

You know, not too long ago, "light AC" was Manilow, Streisand, Diamond, and Bread. There is no "stuck." Heck, you can't even catch much Lionel Richie these days! There's been so much "progress" that there really is no "light AC" anymore...even in Christian AC.

> will the demo ever change?

Probably not...the format is AC!

> as women get older dont you think their taste change??

Given the context of your writing, I don't understand the question.

> do you really know of a 26 year old mom who likes elevator music??

You have XM...you've heard channel 24...that's elevator music! Don't you think that might be a bit of an unfair question?

> will it ever change??

Of course!

> will klove get another 200 stations this year??:)

Are you questioning the authenticity of K-Love's claim of being $5,000,000 short despite writing so many checks left and right for stations and being something like more than $33,000,000 over budget the last three years? How dare you!

meaning dont you think they no longer like what women liked 10 years ago..ok..try this..do you think a 28 year old female who listened to c+ c music factory in high school likes twila paris now??..or point of grace??

ps..i call lionel richie elevator music..even though i know technically its not..but it does put me to sleep :)
______________

First, I think you are comparing two different types of formats. Typical AC/Pop from 10 years ago to current Christian Inspo/AC now.

A better analogy would be:

Would a 28 year old female who liked Wilson Phillips like Point of Grace.

OR

Would a 28 year old female who liked CC & The Music Factory like Rob Thomas.

The answer is Yes.

"i call lionel richie elevator music..even though i know technically its not..but it does put me to sleep :)"

Lionel Richie is a PERFECT example in AC of how music that she is familiar with moves her. YOU may hate it, but if she is 35, she knows every word to every love song he ever did. Solo and with the Commodores. And she is keeping the radio tuned to it. (After all, odds are, that is what was playing during her first kiss...or second...or third...)

i thought wilson phillips WAS point of grace :)..ok..if she liked KISS or BLACK SABBATH in 1985 would she like mercy me now?? :)..and yes i do know females mid 30s that listen to classic rock..
______________

I am one of those females. (and I personally wouldn't call BLACK SABBATH classic rock...but that is another discussion for another format board...) ;)

Again, you pose the wrong analogy. You are crossing formats...and that is inconsistent.

But I will go there with you for the time...

IF she liked Black Sabbath in 85, and she since changed her lifestyle dramatically...then YES. Most definitely. Whatever would have fed her desire to listen to those lyrics then may be dead and gone, or buried far away.

The beauty of Christian radio is that it speaks to a completely different part of who she has become.

Now...if she has not changed her lifestyle, and still likes the sound of artists like Black Sabbath, odds are she is not a P1 or P2 or even a P3...she could be, but it is unlikely. The audience share is just not the same. If she does scan the dial to a Christian AC, it is to hear a song she likes for different reasons.

Again, it's FORMAT & USAGE.

People choose the stations they do for reasons.

Again, not to define myself as the target, but for this thread:

I choose* Mix for LRB/Journey, The Fish for Mercy Me/Bethany Dillon, The Wolf for Eagles/Trisha Yearwood, WAY-FM for Switchfoot/Jeremy Camp, The Rock for Boston/Fleetwood Mac and Jack for...well...just about anything. :)

I don't need them all in one place. I have about 10 presets I can set, and a scan and seek that I can push.

*not necessarily in that order, and not necessarily for just those artists

Exactly....they're just not grasping the idea of "available audience" in these threads. Perhaps this discussion will help them truly understand that adding some number of uncharacteristic songs would result not in more people coming in but in the people who are in heading out! Because of how music and lifestyle flow and weave through so many aspects of life, many people are simply not available to the format because the totality of their lives does not match the totality of the format.

Uh, so...hey, baby...um...so, whattya doin' Friday night? ;)

Other than the Black Sabbath, our tastes in music are almost identical...

LRB...excellent!

If I'm guessing the meaning correctly....

Well, first of all, 28 is a little young for C+C Music Factory, but okay...

No! A typical woman around 30 is not going to like Twila Paris!

Now, get ready for me to blow your mind and maybe even get myself into trouble at the same time....

I would dare say that a typical woman around 50 is not going to like Twila Paris, either!

A lot of the "big name" artists of the past weren't. They didn't really sell that many albums, and, of the albums sold, a number were....shoot, what are the words I'm looking for?...."sympathy" or "guilt" or "default" buys based on a sense of obligation. In addition, the radio stations that played them, when measured against the successful stations of today, had just about no listeners. This is another excellent example of how "low usage" and "no usage" are options that many of you don't seem to really consider -- the stations and the music was "so bad" (a relative term) back then that people would consume them in very low quantities

People would claim to like Sand_ Patt_ (sorry, I never kept up on the spelling changes), Larnelle Harris, and Twila Paris, but their actions told another story. People "felt" they "had to" say that they liked them...peer pressure, guilt, and whatnot. However, real consumption was most likely nowhere near claimed consumption, and it was certainly nowhere what you see today without them. Furthermore, nothing similar (trained-type voices performing art-y songs) existed in the "real" marketplace, and I firmly believe that the marketplace will supply where there is demand. Therefore, I conclude that these artists were not accessible to the general population and never as popular as we were supposed to think they were, and I would even go so far as to assert that stations playing them (including this new Twila "Days Of Elijah") do so at a pretty good risk.

A year ago right now, Christian AC began -- what was it? -- a six-month period in which there was not a single upbeat hit! That scared me to death, but the format seems to have survived it. Today, some of these old-style, trained-voice artists are trying for a comeback, and this scares me even more! Stay away! Leave 'em for the Inspos!

> ps..i call lionel richie elevator music..even though i know
> technically its not..but it does put me to sleep :)

There was a time that his upbeat stuff was the guaranteed "play it, and people will dance" material of the day. Like I said, true soft AC is a relic of the past, and it scares me silly to hear today's light AC -- which isn't! -- being thought of as being "sleepy" or "elevator music!"

Re: n o

> You mean you actually like Black Sabbath?

No! I thought you did! Do you?

Rush, Def Leppard, and Bon Jovi were about as hard as I got, Journey being my all-time fave.

> You MUST be a man.

People in the service industries do call me "sir"...which, regardless of how much my age advances, always makes me wonder is there's someone standing behind me!

Re: n o

no, I like Classic Rock... I wouldn't put them in that catagory. :)

this is the same thing i feel about point of grace..i think people said they liked them because they were suppose too..because christians were suppose to like it. not that they really did. and i seriously hope twila, sandi and evie :) never make it to radio again..zzzzzzzzzzzzz. i remember when third day was too hard for daytime..now they are on all the time..i guess times are changing. i once had a co worker get fired for plaing shine at 9:30 in the morning as filler music..(between programs). there was no music log for non music times..that was 1996.
