I'd put them in a "classic hard rock" based on the years...etc...

But, personally... I'd say Classic Rock...well... Give me the Rolling Stones. ;)

(again...though...whole nother board) (oh, and n o was for neutral_observer, not "no to your taste".) Enjoy that CD!

Sandy Patti, Twila Paris, Evie, Melanie Tunney, etc did skew to women, women 35+ back when they were popular. These singers were sort of the Anne Murray's, Karen Carpenter's of Christian music back then. So the women who were in to Anny Murray or the Carpenter's when they got saved and were looking for Christian music that wasn't hymns probably were the one's who bought these CCM artists records. Today those women are 50+. Those women probably are not as happy with CCM today as it has a "harsher" sound musically than back then, but then again radio be it secular or Christian isn't targeting anyone over 50 so those women will continue to be unhappy and will have to do as others do when left out in the cold by radio and buy CD's of their favorite artists unless one of the satellite radio services (XM or Sirius ) has an oldies CCM station.

I know...we're always looking at tempo issues - BUT the thing that gets me is that the power ballads seem to be be the best performers....

That's almost always the case in *all* female-targeted formats...

Smashed -- I don't think I buy your third premise. I'd be careful about taking your own personal experience in CCM and speaking of it as if it's the norm. From my experience, it's not.

I've been in CCM Radio since 1974, and have seen a lot of changes. AC has never been, nor should it ever be, the same as CHR. It's a format for the masses, and it's targeted toward the largest female radio demo (25-54). But to blithely say what you said in your third premise doesn't take into account all of the stations where that's NOT the case. In fact, from my experience there are more reporting CCM stations that are not programming the way you've proffered than are.

Now, I won't assume that every station does what we do on KSBJ, but I follow the format enough to say with confidence that there are very few stations that are looking at it quite as simplistically as you put it. That may have been your experience in Baton Rouge, but it's NOT for most of us.

AC (and other good programmers) look for what our audience tells us they want to hear. Isn't that what we should be doing? Granted, some of us are more sophisticated in our methodology than others, but this post, and others, comparing today's Christian AC to "elevator music" are speaking in such generalities that they really don't hold much water.

In the past hour, I played the following Artists on KSBJ/Houston: Kutless,
Delirious, Third Day, Delirious, Shawn McDonald, Newsboys & Jars of Clay. I consider that straight ahead AC for 2005.

I also played songs from AC's core artists, Mercy Me, Chapman, Chris Rice, Casting Crowns, & Joy Williams. There are a lot of reporting AC's that are hotter than us, and some that are lighter. But we're pretty much doing what 75% of the reporting stations are doing. And our ratings continue to rise.

So, I think the "norm" today for AC isn't what you're assuming it to be. I once heard Mike McVay say "AC...the format nobody likes -- except the listeners." I think he's right.
