Thoughts on Dr. Laura leaving radio?

I'm not sure how I feel...certainly she was wrong, but to give up a career?

Don't know what station is now carrying her (till the end?) in Boston, maybe WROL 950. She is
syndie by Premiere I think but I don't think Rush Radio had her. WRKO had her on for awhile. I
think she was overtaken in a 10 or 11 pm slot back around 2002 with "VB's Pleasure Pit" which ran
for a little less than a yr, then VB left RKO for Ch 25.

by the way she may be seen as conservative but had few defenders on Free Republic, a conservative messageboard

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2572665/posts

>>"Good. She is intolerably obnoxious, overbearing, boring, and she obviously needs a shrink."
"Good riddance....had a run-in with that hags producer years ago."

Someone said she gave good advice but "her show was slllooooooww, duuuuulllll, and boooooorrring." She is called "mean and obnoxious" on that board though someone says
she must have had a following--supp. #5 highest rated nationwide?

I remember the "posing nude" scandal and I revised her theme song "I got A New Attitude"
to..."...I like to pose in the nude!" :)

Weird--I was pretty sure her show was syndie by Premiere, and indeed it says this on
premiereradio.com:

>> The Dr. Laura Program
Morals, ethics, and values... Dr. Laura helps millions steer a path through difficult life decisions by insisting that they do the right thing.

But radio-info is saying she's on Talk Radio Network and I thought, maybe she is somehow
affiliated with them, too. Sure enough on talkradionetwork.com there's some blurb about her
getting a Marconi award. Maybe it's done by both services, kind of like how Hannity IIRC
is done by a combo of Citadel and Premiere. Maybe one service produces the show while
the other syndies it?

Good riddance. I understand that listeners want to hear her chastise people who call in already knowing they are wrong, but it's just not good radio. Plus she is a hypocrite. She has the right to proselytise, which she does - And others have the right to critizise her for what she says. I don't understand where she thinks her 1st Ammendment rights are being challlenged. Sounds like she just doesn't like being criticised. She just likes to bully people. Oh, and Laura, here's an idea - Try generating just the least bit of warmth once in a while. She is one cold broad. Cold only works if you're funny. And she's definitely not funny.

Tom Taylor's column today (subscribe here at radio-info) says that Dr L left Premiere. Still on their website though!

>>When Dr. Laura left Premiere she wanted to control her fate and she formed Take On The Day with veteran Geoff Rich.

I'd be curious how many stations actually carried her live..its got to be a handful at best..towards the end she was pretty much an overnight filler choice in plenty of markets..

I suspect her affiliate list was shrinking, at least in terms of live coverage (getting call-ins), so she followed the #1 rule of talk radio: Manipulate the events to your advantage, and don't let the truth get in the way. She probably knew she was on her way out, so why not create some publicity in order to "resign under fire" and help set up your next move. I'm sorry, but I believe very little of what these people say.

what station is now carrying her
I suppose the answer is I didn't know she was still in radio. I've heard Dr. Joy a few times in the last 10 years or so but I can't say I've heard Laura.

Could this be a calculated end: to go out with a free speech bang?
Could she have chosen another ethnic slur to use as an example? Maybe one used to describle her own background?

How did that death of her mother ever play out? She had been dead for a month or so --without Dr.L noticing-- and Laura said she was murdered. It was suggested that maybe Laura was embarrassed and just went with a homicide scenario.

I noticed that the Boston Globe-Democrat used this as an opportunity to resurrect every negative story about conservative miscues on the radio that they could find. That paper is as transparent as Barry O. said he was going to be.

She's the Sonny Bloch of personal advice. She's never had a shred of compassion for any caller and deserves no sympathy now.

She's like Michael Savage, but stuck on the same ridged format every hour. Then again, I think the one interview I heard her do was boring as all hell.

Wasn't she on middays on RKO for a year or two?

VB's show The Pit had potential too!

Like I said I found her to be very abrasive. That's why I prefer Dr. Joy Browne. She's much nicer.
Her show is a cancer infesting every 4th-rate A.M. station. Both radio shrinks but Joy Browne makes my skin crawl. It's fine if you're 75 or 80 & have the radio on for companionship.

Fine, more listeners for Dave Ramsey! :D
