I know that some of this has probably been discussed in earlier threads, but I thought it merited its own topic.
I think that the debut of Hot 101.5 has livened a lethargic Tampa radio scene. Although to many of us - especially those of us that grew up on The Power Pig - FM radio is not what it used to be, it is refreshing to have an old-fashioned "CHR War." Even better, I love that Hot 101.5 is going after WFLZ - and MJ in particular - in some of its voiceovers. The other day, I heard one taking a shot at MJ's syndication, stating that unlike WFLZ, Hot 101.5 caters to Tampa Bay, not to St. Louis. These types of voiceovers harken back to the shots that The Power Pig used to take at some of its early competition. I hope that Hot takes it further: They should go after all of the Clear Channel syndication, as well as the canned Ryan Seacrest crap. They should also note the fact that Kane is not broadcasting in Tampa; he is broadcasting from Washington, D.C. They can also note that Rat Boy and Stay Puff are broadcasting from Chicago.
But most importantly, Hot has done what good capitalism does: It has forced 'FLZ to find ways to improve. Scaling back MJ might be a good thing. The longer music hours on 'FLZ might also help.
