Thoughts on Mark Madden's first few days on the X

I'm the exact opposite: I want a DJ who actually spins tunes on an "alternative rock" station. Grim used to drive me nuts with political garbage. Now, there is another person yelling at me over the radio. Of course, I also wish that WDUQ would dump NPR and continue to play music in the afternoon ;D. Why do radio programmers seem so hell-bent on shooting themselves in the foot in regards to playing new music? As if the formulaic and repetitive, "focus group friendly", music selection hadn't turned-off an entire generation, we now run further away from credibility by adding talkers to scare-off what's left of the young audience. Needless to say, I don't get it... ::)

The calls are not on the air live. He's doing that during the songs and spot breaks and they are being edited. And he's better playing off of callers than when doing a monologue.

It keeps up the pace of the show and maybe also allows them more of a safety net with Madden than they'd have with just a 7-second delay. I just think they need to clean up the formatics a little bit, drop in some imaging in spots.... instead of a segue from a caller's voice to a song there should be a quick "Madden on the X" sounder or something like that as a transition.

He will also stay on longer on nights with Pens games, tonight doing "pregame to the pregame" from 6-7p. I wouldn't be surprised if that takes on more of a traditional sports talk format without the music.

And as for listeners who just want to hear new music on the radio, there are some of you (there's a guy on the Tampa board who drives everyone absolutely nuts on that topic). But not enough of you... terrstrial radio is going back to strong personalities to combat the iPod mentality of satellite radio.
