I noticed in today's trends that WRBQ is down to #16 25-54 persons. Anybody willing to shed any light on what's up with them? Have they made major changes in the last 6 months? They seemed on a very solid roll there for a good lone while.
We can do better than that. A comment like that is nothing but radio people bitching about radio (the same comments all radio people make).
How about some constructive comments? Has the music changed, did a major talent leave, are they too cluttered with commercials and Imaging? Did they make any major changes?
I don't work in radio. When I am in the office I like to hear music. I cannot play the radio loud enough to listen to the chatter, nor do I need the distraction. I put it on the Q for a while and I always end up changing the station. Note that I am not referring to the morning program, I do expect a lot of talk during that daypart.
I listen to the streams, example:
Today, I ended up listening to WCBS out of New York, after getting fed up with Q105. Monday, I listened to the Q but then switched to LA's KRTH. Tuesday to Thursday, I listened to KFOG in San Francisco.

Is this a big change, though (repetition & clutter)? That complaint is very generic and typical. Gotta admit, to go from top 5 to #16 is a big drop in such a short time. Or, I suppose it could be they just aren't getting the diaries (yes, Arbitron, this DOES happen ;D)

In my opinion, The Eagle has probably successfully eroded Q105's numbers the most. They seem to have had a few good trends. However, Cox will probably screw it up somehow in the next year. When 102.5 and 107.3 had finally won the battle over Thunder, what did they do? Nothing. 102.5 still sucks and 107.3 and 101.5 are boring to listen too. Q105 has personality and that's what makes it different. I'd simply attribute the trends to diary placement. Even The Dove is down the last few trends which is not typical. Besides, I've seen a few Q105 billboards around so maybe it'll pick back up in the next trend.

I'm not stupid Oldies Cat. I saw you said IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS.
You also say "in the latest trends". Trends are 30 DAY PERIODS.
Then later you said they dropped from #5 to #16.
Did you mean in the latest BOOK (90 day period) and not TREND?
A lot of stations in this market play the same songs - eagle, q105, the point, the bone - i like Q105 because it's not automated all the time. Among that list, how many stations can actually call on the phone, get a live person at the other end and possibly even get a request played? That said, in regards to repetition, could the Q cut down on the number of journey, billy joel and phil collins songs?
Trends are trends! They go up and down. Now if Q-105 stays on a dive for 6 more months, then they have problems and will have to re-evaluate things. Mason Dixon is pretty good about keeping things fresh -(certainly more than Cox stations), so I would think Q-105 bounces back by the end of the Summer. You also just never know what the heck is going on with Arbitron sampling whether it be Diary or PPM. Gotta love this business!
Do you think that these stations are losing share because they keep pushing the music into the 70's. When they do that, they get competition from WDUV, or the Eagle or similar stations. I know we have talked here before, but especially here in Florida, (heaven's waiting room), you would think you would want to program to the old farts. Right now there is a big hole in formats to programming aging baby boomers. I see CBS has a similar problem with their superpower WOMC in Detroit with the same format. Even though I'm sure it's a fluke, but look at the numbers the real old oldies are getting on CC's Sarasota's AM's 1450 and 1320
First, as previously mentioned in this topic, there is a ton of crossover between Q-105 and 102.5, 107.3, 101.5, 106.3, even 100.7 and 94.9 in some ways. The one thing Q-105 has in its favor is different and mostly live and local personalities. Since most of those personalities have been in the market for decades is also a plus.
My main problem with Q-105's music though is you never really know what you're going to get from one daypart to another. On hour they're playing "Tampa Bay's greatest hits" (whatever that is), and the next hour it's all 70s music. On Saturday night it's a 70s/80s/90s dance party, and the next morning its 80s Back Trax, only to have an all-60s show that night. A trend is just a trend, but I would think Q-105 should find a decade or sound and focus on it. Variety is good but sometimes it's all over the map.
Take a listen to wgrr from Cincinnati http://wgrr.com This is how q105 should sound but with the 80's music Q105 plays. Wgrr plays some 80's muisc not alot they focus on the late 60's and 70's.

In essence, I agree with what you say. But the ad reps and the agencies would take issue. Most everyone targets the 25-54 demo, because they seem to be the "big spenders." Yes, some of the "old farts" have money tucked away but that would be considered "the exception". You COULD argue, a well-programmed 50's/60's music format would help fill a void, IF that format earned large numbers, it couldn't be ignored. Question is, could someone pull it off in Tampa, and do it in such a way, to still secure lucrative national contracts?
