Thoughts On The "Apology Show"

I think RAD are doing an admirable job with this. It's a show that I'm sure everyone involved is very uncomfortable participating in.

Here're a few questions:

1. Is this what KRXQ listeners tune in for?

My immediate thought is that the audience that chooses to listen to RAD, do so to not have to listen to "issue-oriented" shows. I am obviously not the average listener...and I am already at the point of "OK..point made...let's wrap it up now." Perhaps I'm being harsh.

2. Is this show, featuring people from outside the local community, serving Sacramento?

I find it interesting how many advocates that aren't living in the immediate listening area, are being allowed to dictate the content of this show.

I admit to not having heard all the show so far...but

3. Have the children been heard from?

I'm hearing everyone BUT those who are dealing with this first-hand. Adults continuing to speak on behalf of others. One of the primary issues kids have is that nobody's listening to THEM! I know Rob could use the in-studio vocal effector to hide their voice and protect their identity. I'd let them have their voice.

If there were kids speaking, I stand corrected and apologize. There is a girl on air right now talking about her boyfriend.

And most importantly...is it good radio?

I think they're doing great. I guess the question is; who's being served? The audience? Or, the guests?

Just some observations. Things I'm thinking while listening.

The people being served are RAD, themselves. This is their "community service" punishment to make amends with those they have offended, so they can move on and get back to making money. It's all about damage control. They would never dedicate an entire morning to this subject, had they never made the negative remarks in the first place that caused all this uproar.

Water intoxication...transgender bashing...hmmm, who's the next Entercom morning team that will make national headlines for this market??

They caved, plain and simple. I understand why they caved. And I'd do the same. But the fact that they're not admitting to it is insincere. Rob and Arnie want us to believe they discovered this newfound 'sensitivity' and 'maturity' in 2 weeks? After years and years of trashing anything and everything with no regret? Gimme a break.

That being said. The show was a bore. It was a nice and friendly and informational. The calls that did challenge Rob and Arnie were cut off after their initial statement.

I had no problem with their original comments. I'm not stupid enough to think that Arnie was 'inciting violence' against transgender children. To me, that's ridiculous. People should be upset and real child abusers. Oh, but they don't have a radio show that you can easily assault from your computer via email, comments, and facebook groups that you join by clicking a mouse to show just how outraged you really are.

I wonder if Arnie is going to stop his homphobic comments and constant gay bashing? Thuper Duperrrrr!!

Today's show was a total waste of airtime.
RAD were played like a $2 fiddle by the "offended" parties, Entercom and their clueless boycotting advertisers. ::)
This nation has become a bunch of spineless idiots that are offended by ANYTHING.

Here are some of my answers to Neanderpauls's questions:

1. Is this what KRXQ listeners tune in for?

Absolutely not. RAD listeners tune in to be entertained.... not lectured to.

2. Is this show, featuring people from outside the local community, serving Sacramento?

No.... this show is pandering to the people that got their fragile little feelings hurt.

3. Have the children been heard from?

Children should not be on this show nor be allowed to listen to it.

And most importantly...is it good radio?

Not good radio at all... the hosts sound like a bunch of tools that were bullied by a special interest group that worked an effective PR campaign to get their meaningless issue more visibility.

I guess the question is; who's being served? The audience? Or, the guests?

Entercom's wallet.... they can't afford to lose the ad revenue... plus they can't afford to fire RAD and lose even more revenue by cancelling the show.

And trust me... Entercom is smart enough to realize this fiasco was totally blown out of porportion by a few squeaky wheels with an agenda... no one will lose their job over this silly fabricated outrage.

And by the way.... if either Armstrong and/or Getty made the same comments... none of this "outrage" would have happened.

And if this show actually aired in San Francisco rather than Sacramento, like say a KFOG or The Bone, They would have been fired.

I thought it was great and handled perfectly. If it was insencere, it didn't show. I think they did it as well as possible.

I wanna puke reading this psychobabble pander on the boards. Not just this one, but the ones that have landed here of late. I won't mention names but for chr*st sake kids, we're talking about radio. With everyone being fired lately is it any wonder what's going on the air to garner ratings. Wake the friggn hell up!! You're debating the merits of a planned publicity stunt, and the chatter from the resulting tune-in-for-our-pretend-apology show (which coincidentally was shouted to the world to every media outlet that would listen) here is like hearing a bunch of high school 98 rock P1's in the bathroom having a smoke.

Work on the air for awhile and then get back to me newbies and wannabies...

I find it amusing that those who were seriously offended by the inital comments and felt the apology show was great are most likely the very same people who never tuned in to RAD before. That's one point for RAD (got a few more listeners, even if they're only there to monitor your behavior) and negative 2 for their P1s who listen to that show because they find it comical. Surely the dedicated RAD fans were changing stations shortly after the "lesson" began.

Publicity stunt or not... I really don't care because I don't listen to that show. However, the thing that gets me frustrated is when fringe special interest groups get away with silencing or punishing anyone who dissents in the least - even if done in an attempt to be comedic. I'm so tired of the PC preaching and people taking things way too seriously. Do these people really think they are so much more enlightened than the rest of us plebeians that they need to save us with their rhetoric? Thanks... but no thanks.

Curious... do you recall Howard Stern ever apologizing for offending people?

Frequently when I hear adults talk about issues like this, I ask either to myself or to them directly, "Do these adults remember what it is like to be a child?  Were they ever children themselves?"  Sometimes I talk to the kids and they tell me, "These adults have no idea what they're talking about."  It's interesting to hear the thought process and conclusions reached by some of them, as if adults add unnecessary layers of complication.

At 17, I did book reports for a Spanish class covering the works of author Ana Maria Matute.  Her stories are all about children making sense of an adult world.

In some of those stories, the kids themselves grow up and do unto the next generation what was done unto them.

Those stories had a tremendous impact on me.  I remember hating when I was a kid that my input was ignored simply because I was a kid.  I vowed then I wouldn't write off somebody merely because of their age.  (And now that I'm older, that applies to people of all ages, especially in a country that tends to NOT value its elders.)

Incidentally, I was just talking to somebody about a related topic when they were saying the group advertisers covet most is 18 - 34 or 18 - 49.  (I'm within at least one of those, as if age matters on the Internet.)  There's another group out there with spending money too!  (They may not be in high school, yet they're called "seniors.")

For all my past rants, let me make a few points. I don't live in your area, but I learned about it on this Board.

1) For whatever reason, they said what they did.

2) It made the local and national media attracting loads of response.

3) Whether are not RAD are sincere or it garnered a better book, I don't care. The discussion was extremely intelligent to my mind and got the necessary points across. If this gets them a 25 share, I don't mind.

4) As I have said a million times, if they went after adult rock stars for wearing women's clothes on stage, who cares. John Oates and Keith Richards have admitted to wearing women's tops at times because they looked better or Keith said he was so stoned he put on Anita Pallenberg's shirts by mistake.

5) This was like the mess in Largo Fl when the former city manager got fired for announcing he wanted to be a she and run the city after the change.

6) Dude looks like a lady-----------!
