Thoughts on the Loop

I was in town for an extended weekend and was pretty pleased with the way the Loop sounds... reminded me a lot of the good old days when I was in high school in the NW burbs. Johnny B sounded a little toned down... 15 years since his hey-day that's to be expected... but he still puts on an entertaining show. I also liked Pete McMurray in afternoons... a huge improvement over Zakk... is Pete there permanently or just on an interim? Musically I enjoyed most of what I heard, though some of the currents (Rush, Scorpions) were awful. Otherwise a good mix of hard-classics mixed with the best of the 90s stuff. My biggest gripe: the imaging was pretty flat... very little attitude/humor/content... just Corley growling "Chicago's Rock Station", and the same lifeless promo every hour... gotta say that was disappointing.

Only checked out Q-101 and Mix briefly and was extremely underwhelmed by both... the past 5 years have not been kind to Chicago radio.
 
The last five years of Emmis bumbling rock radio in Chicago have not been kind.
Both Q101 and The Loop have been under their leadership and direction.
The resulting poor ratings and uninspired sound are the results.
It would take two hands to count the number of PDs hired and fired since 2001.
The cash cows are very ill.

That's because Creative Services guys, Production Directors, Image Providers are undervalued and their importance under-rated. If more value were put into these things, stations would sound better, and Time Spent Listening would improve!
 
The Loop has made a lot of changes lately that have made the station much more exciting. They have amped up their appearances at concerts and other events which helps build listener loyalty. While they support Johnny B's show with lots of promotion, Loop management is silent on the rest of their line-up which doesn't help ratings the rest of the day.
 
The reason those numbers are not sticking the rest of the day is because of what happens at 10:01am every morning. One of the greatest broadcasters of all time segue's into one of the worst. That girl on middays should be on overnights (in fact their current overnight jock is incredibly talented and should not be in that daypart - though I don't know about immediately following Brandmeier). I have heard better female talent is much smaller markets. I thought when they fired the PD that hired her she would also be let go. Maybe her contract is prohibitive of making a change so soon. Granted, the midday slot would be a tough one to fill correctly because of the stellar morning show. But frankly having no jock and just playing music would be a better way to go than what they have now. Sorry to rant but I am quite sick of having to change the dial to 97.1 (though it is a great station) at 10 every morning!

The loop used to be known for the great music but their execution right now is completely off. Their pick of music is decent but their branding of it on air is very flat. Very non-exciting.
 
It would be nice if the Loop moved both Byrd and Crazy Ray into better time slots and gave them more visibility. Either one would be great on the afternoon drive.

You sir are correct! Back in the day (15-20 years ago) Brandy would segue into Bob Stroud (FM) or Kevin Matthews (AM). While the numbers did drop both were in the top 10 in 18-35. At 2:30 Skafish (FM) and Dahl (FM) were on and both were great with 18-35 numbers. Your switching to 97.1 shows how used to that segue you are. Heck, even in my mind I think Jimmy Shorts is coming on after Brandy. Is it wrong?

While The Loop doesn't need a great mid day presence, they need a good afternoon presence to keep people listening through the lull.
