Thoughts on WCBS newsradio 880

Kudos for continuing news online during Yankees games!
That's not choice. That's contractual.

I enjoy the CBS Network news at the top of the hour. It is well written and in five minutes gives you a comprehensive summary of world and national news. I don't like how WCBS only carries the first two minutes of the newscast. They should carry the full 5 min. I don't think PPM would be too compromised if the local news began at :05 instead of :03. Both KCBS and WBBM carry the full cast and look at their numbers.

If you look at a small AM station which is WKNY, they carries TOH newscast from CBS News. It runs a good 5 minutes of world and national events as well as local stuff. That is one in the morning with Warren Lawrence and some people and then the first 3 minutes of CBS TOH News with local on weekdays and weather on weekends with satellite syndicated music. That might be a good thing.

The Yankees can also be heard on WKXP/WZAD's "The Wolf" during the baseball season when it is still a country music station which is also Cumulus' flagship to Yankee baseball where they simulcasting the games from WCBS-AM which is on FM, but it sounded a lot clearer when it is heard on CBS-FM's HD3 channel.

@radio124... WCBS does run the full CBS newscast sometimes, when there isn't too much local news. I think their concern is to get a few local stories in before they have to go to Traffic & Weather Together at :08. If you take the national news till :05 and the format calls for a one-minute commercial just before the traffic, that leaves only a two minute window for the first segment of local news.

At least WCBS is better than other nearby CBS-owned stations: WPHT Philadelphia and WTIC Hartford. Those stations are so concerned with getting their local news on, and plenty of commercials before going to a syndicated show at :08, they omit CBS Network News except late nights and some weekend hours. During their all-news format, CBS-owned WBZ Boston also omits CBS News at the top of the hour. WBZ only runs it overnights.

I suppose stations like WPHT and WTIC don't have the luxury of being an all-news station like WCBS-AM is - as you said, a lot of 'PHT and 'TIC's time is spoken for.

WPHT was a CBS all-news station for a number of years under the calls of WCAU.

Why should WPHT focus on news? CBS already owns KYW.
