Thoughts on WIST?

i like savage. but thats about it. i am not into local talkers. i only listen to wwl for sports.

My fav talk station by far. Like smash I enjoy Savage. I look at him as entertainment and he can really go off sometimes. Like that he does not spout the Republican talking points you hear from Hannity & Limbaugh. I did not care for the Mancow guy right off but he is growing on me. Boortz was a favorite at one time but he is boring to me lately. Didn't care too much for Warner, thought he liked to hear himself talk too much so him being tired of the city was not a big deal to me. I'll be glad when Korre (or Karre) is back, he brings some humor to the table and I was impressed by him at a couple of election forums before the last election. Really like Erics show too. He's not the smoothest guy but he is the only local talker to have any guts to take on the establishment. I don't hear the same passion from anyone else on the air in town.

690 is my favorite station. They seem like normal people, think thats the difference for me. That may not play for everyone but when I send an email to them asking about something, I get a response almost right away. I'm still waiting on a response from Garland that I sent over a year ago. Just depends on what your looking for I guess but they seem to be the most honest talk station in town IMHO.

LL,
I think you get a "quick response" because they get so little in the way of emails. Good for them.
That said, I'm still waiting for a response to a letter I sent Johnny Carson back in '73.
Rude jerk.

Kaare's terrible. I can't believe they're bringing him back. All the hype about his campaign and he got what, 4,500 votes. He's a joke.

You said Warner liked to hear himself, that's Kaare even worse. Talking down to callers who don't agree with him. Telling us over and over and over again until we're ready to vomit that he's the only host from New Orleans. Well, dude, wake up. 40 plus years of living in New Orleans, dragging your daddy's name into your radio and tv ads, all the free air time 690 gave you, and you get 4,500 votes? You need to get over yourself in a big way.

Mancow is different than anything else in New Orleans. Don't know if it will work.

Boortz is Boortz.

Eric needs to realize that the storm was 2 years ago. There's a lot going on and he's missing it. Maybe he should take a break and go back to doing sports. At least there he sounds like he's enjoying himself. Except when he talks about food or drinks. Then he sounds like a person.

Savage is entertaining, but in small bites.

Jerry Doyle - tried to listen, but Levin is more entertaining on 99.5

Who was the guy that was on Thursday and Friday in Kaare's slot? He had a guy on talking about immigration and he talked to Mike Strain yesterday. What slot will he be taking? He had guests on and he let them talk. Didn't have any callers though so, maybe no one was listening.

I agree with Buff on Kaare. I'm so sick of the born in New Orleans rap. Eric's gotta lighten up or he's going to blow a gasket.

Mancow and Savage suck. But they're both better than boring 870 and the pathic bunch over at RNO. Take away Andre and Hannity and you could throw that station away. Why doesn't 690 try to get Hannity back and put someone local in Afternoon Drive? Anybody but Kaare.

Oops, meant "pathetic" for RNO. Where's the spellchecker?????

Thanks Doctor_Technical.

So the guy's a weekender? Sounded pretty good to me.

So Doc, what's the real story on 690 from the inside?

How come Shane left so suddenly? What's the story about Mancow? Shane's in mornings, Kaare campaigns/Shane moves to afternoons/Mancow's on in the morning, Kaare loses (no surprise)/Shane bolts (big surprise).

Will 690 even be around in 08?

Now that Kaare's back, WIST is done except for Mancow and small doses of Eric (and only until Andre starts taking her meds again).

Savage is a screamer who isn't relevant to New Orleans. Kaare is a waste of air. Boortz isn't working.

690 should bring Hannity back. Or Glenn Beck. Or O'Reilly. Or the guy from Jefferson (at least he was funny, and he had on interesting guests).

The Jefferson guy said we haven't learned anything in the 2 years since Katrina, and we haven't learned how to protect ourselves from the next Katrina, Rita, Kathleen, or some other bitch. Classic line! I fell out of my chair.

You knew the writing was on the wall when they replaced Shane (although I like Mancow). When you go backwards and replace local with syndicated, you're losing. They should have dropped Savage and worked with Shane to make him better.

I have to put in my 2 cents about 690. I had a lot of hope for the station as a stand-alone am in a major market. But in the last two months, they've gone down the tubes.

Mancow is different. Maybe too different, but I give them credit for putting on something. But where's the local elements? Where's the news, traffic, information? Why do you think people listen to WWL, to hear Bob D? They could plug anyone in that slot and dominate.

Where's Shane? You blow out a guy for no reason after he's in morning drive for 4 years? And why are they still running Shane's voice on promos and on their web site?

Does Eric ever listen to airchecks? He constantly goes "uh-huh", "yeah", "uh-huh" when others are talking. And speaking of talking, he should have learned how to talk before he went on the air. The guy does work but, listen to yourself on the air. You've been on long enough that you shouldn't sound like some guy off the street.

I can't believe they brought Kaare back. Talk about an ego, how does he even fit his head through the door? Someone else that needs to learn how to talk. How long has Kaare been on the air and he still stutters?

Why Savage? You chuck local morning drive and keep syndicated afternoon drive? That's going to bring in listeners and advertisers.

Even their part-time hosts suck. The Erol Laborde show is awful. He can't put together one sentence, let alone two. The stumbling, bumbling Erol. And they run the same show three times on the weekend! Are they so hard up for programming that they have to work Eric 6 days and run Erol 3 times? "The Thinking Man's Talk" my a__.

I thought Ed Clancy was the worst show on radio. Erol makes Ed sound like a Marconi winner.

690 is bad radio, anyway you slice it. The "Real Talk of New Orleans" needs to start living up to it's slogan or the next stop is Spanish.

Or go back to their former format of oldies... I think a sat fed oldies on the former tix would do some numbers in this town....

I live in Orleans but listened to the Jeff Parish show today. Walt is good, too good maybe. Just goes to show that 690 management has no idea how to manage a station or develop talent.

They toss Shane, bring back stuttering Kaare. Keep really stuttering Eric. Give us the really, really stuttering Errol Laborde show not once, not twice, but three times a week! ("The Thinking Man's Talk Radio Show". 3 weeks and he's repeating guests. Just tell the truth, 690 is selling out to that worthless rag NO Magazine). And 690's management thinks it's so good you can download the stumblebum Laborde Show.

Put Kaare on a permanent vacation. Spend some time working with Eric and a speach thereapist. Toss the Errol Laborde show (trust me, no one will miss it except Errol and the restaurant writer from NO Mag).

Give us Real Talk Radio or like RFLA said, go Oldies, or go Spanish. Just stop wasting the 690 frequency.

Car - I live in Gentilly and I listened today too (Inside Jeff was off last week because of Tulane). I wouldn't say "Walt is too good" but, his interview with John Young was better than Eric's interview with Young yesterday and infinitely better than any interview Kaare could have done.

Errol Laborde is brutal. It's sad how a guy can write but doesn't realize that he can't speak. His show is a train wreck.

I say 690's next slogan is "The Real Hispanic Talk of New Orleans."

Ck14, the C is for Chris, Armentor is my last name so not Car-Mentor, C Armentor.

I was an avid listener of 690. Now I punch around and am usually disappointed. There is so much going on in New Orleans and the Metro and so much that could be done to make New Orleans radio better. 690 and 99.5 should be the alternative. But they're not. 99.5 has too many non-personalities (Rob & Bo, Jim Brown, Garey & Anthony). Nobody cares what these people have to say or their opinions.

The same with 690. Their hosts have no credibility. Nobody in this town or anywhere would hire Kaare Johnson. He has zero credibility as a talk host. The same with Eric. He used to buy time to do sports. Anyone can buy time. Just look at Errol Laborde. Talk about a waste of an hour.

Maybe Kaare and Eric work cheap, but that shouldn't be enough. If cheap is all that matters, sign off or go all sat.

Neither station spends a dollar trying to market themselves, which is a good thing since both of their products are terrible. Fix the product. Then, maybe you'll get some listeners, and some advertisers. They can't survive with a 1.7 and .9. I know it's 12+ but, their demos aren't there either.

Actually I don't have no inside line or anything, but my guess would be another station before 690am for hispanic talk... The station has backers that can weather a little on this one....

My guess is if Crocodile can get the funds together, I'd be looking for him to put a Hispanic talker in this town..

Kaare was off Friday and Today. Why wasn't Walt Benetti on? Why did we get two hours of Tulane Sports with the "Voice of Tulane" (that nobody listens to). It isn't bad enough that Kaare's back but now we get the Tulane Basketball pre-season show, the Bob Toledo show, Tulane Basketball...

It's been a year. The Kaare experiment should be over. Handel on the law draws higher ratings than Eric Asher. Nobody's listening. Nobody cares. Make some more changes or flip.

Do they broadcast Tulane games in Spanish? Well, maybe not. RFLA says someone will beat them there too. What about Spanish Oldies?
