Thoughts or predictions on Austin radio in 2012

Im interested in hearing any thoughts on what may happen this year to Austin radio as in stations flipping or tweaks, ect... Any predictions from LOCAL Austin radio enthusiasts on fates of stations or just overall opinions on how Austin radio in general will be in a year from now.

My thoughts, if KVET keeps on going with this new management team they will not be in the top 5. KHFI will continue being close to the top with the morning show. KGSR flip? I doupt it if someone said they are making money still, they probably wont. Comedy radio may go on to a high powered station?

I think KGSR is vulnerable. And ... someone -- not necessarily Emmis -- should take on KHFI. Even stealing just a small fraction of their audience would make someone -- maybe BMP -- some decent coin.

KGSR has the strongest signal in central Texas. Yet they cannot present themselves listenable to the Austin market. It's time for a flip!

They are a rimshot thanks to their roots licensed to Killeen. Their signal is strongest over a lot of empty land as a result. Univision 62 has the same issue... and the same tower near Bertram in rural Burnet County. Bertram is 35 miles from downtown Austin while the West Lake Hills tower farm is ten times closer. Also remember Hays and Bastrop Counties are also in the Austin metro, and they are 60 miles from the Bertram tower.

The original format on the Bertram tower, CHR KBTS "B-93" had some impressive ratings in the late 80's. Didn't last after KHFI version 2.0 launched on 96.7.

It didn't help B-93 any to be bought by K-96.7's owners during the initial consolidation frenzy. Was it Rusk Corporation? (KTRH Houston, et al?) In any case, they didn't need two CHRs.

I wonder if 95.1'll come back with a new format? It could go back to simulcasting KTXZ, who knows?

I would place my bet on KGSR to flip, but as KLBJ-AM's FM sister.

99.7 would have KGSR
and
102.7 would be of course KGSR.

Why? 92.5 ESPN Deportes and 93.3 are close on the dial to each other.

Austin's Biillingual community would listen to both. Austin News in English and ESPN Sports in Spanish get the scoop on the World Cup, and other games from US, Latin, and Central America.

Speaking of, they might try Spanish News on 99.7, move Comedy to 93.3, and move KLBJ-AM simulcast to 102.7

I'm thinking 92.5 will flip to something more mainstream as soon as it moves its tower to West Lake Hills. And 92.5 in Burnet has already moved to 103.9... So it won't be long.

What do you think 92.5 will flip to once the tower moves to West Lake Hills antenna farm?

Will they go after KHFI? Or make it a Jack FM?

Maybe they'll make it KTFM 2 since it's in austin. I don't see Austin getting Jack when it has Bob. Emmis'll get mad.

Then there main compeition would be from KHFI and KPEZ. BMP could go after Emmis' BOB-FM and take some from neighboring KGSR on 93.3 and KLBJ 93.7 Jack has heavy classic rock spins in their playlist.

98.9 has gotten rid of scott shannon's satellite program and going local, saying 60's 70's and more, austin's greatest hits (probably going after bob 103). i think fred is correct about 92.5 changing formats probably going mainstream. pop en espanol or top 40.

From 12am to 6am they still play it according to KXBT's website. They are trying to be more of a local station while keeping costs to a minimum. Seems like they know how to play the game. Everybody knows the third shift costs more than the second and first shift.

As far as pop en espanol it has been tried and failed. If they did a top 40 it would be over saturated due to KHFI and KPEZ. A Jack fm makes more since. Bob has staying power and no competitor. KHFI and KPEZ play simular songs and are owned by the same company which would crush KXXS ratings. Of course it could be a Urban Jack to capture KAZI listeners. They could try a run at Urban AC. The adult African American community is underserved in Austin radio. Not everyone wants to listen to rap or hip hop.

Didn't Houston and Huntsville have Bob 105.3 and Jack 103.7?

Lisiting to 98.9 tonight their playing more a Classic Hits kinda stuff like 98.7 KLUV in DFW plays or KONO in SA

Did they unplug that God-awful satellite feed from Cumulus/Scott Shannon? Scott's a great broadcaster--but 24/7? Or is it now Scott and Tom Kent sharing the dish?
