Three Montgomery Market TV Stations Merge

Even though its not radio - its definitely media significant.

Bahakel Broadcasting, owner of WAKA CBS 8 Selma/Montgomery, has negotiated a purchase of WBMM CW 22 Tuskegee/Montgomery. These two stations will operate a sales agreement with WNCF ABC 32 and all three stations will co-locate in a new HD facility on Harrison Road at the ABC 32 studios.

Here is the CBS 8 news report and the details of the transactions and transitiion.

How shameless and pathetic does your news/TV organization have to be make this your leading news story? I'm sure this 'huge media merger' was the the only thing secretaries and desk clerks all over town dished about over lunch. ::)

It's significant news, of course. But not lead story significant, nor it it particularly 'exciting' for anyone not employed by a TV station. It would have been much classier for them to make this announcement for a segment near the end of the broadcast--they could have teased it even: "Stay tuned for a very special announcement concerning the future of WAKA and two other Montgomery TV stations you may enjoy."

Halbrooks and Hicks were/are hard enough to tolerate, and now they've been made corporate shills. Blech.

Combining local TV stations is not really good for broadcasting. I have witnessed the consequences in the designated market area of Mobile-Pensacola. If the three groups of combined stations (WALA-TV and WFNA-TV, WPMI-TV and WJTC-TV, WEAR-TV and WFGX-TV) were separated, they would be a greater variety of programming around here.

I'm tired of WJTC-TV broadcasting promotions for programs broadcast by WPMI-TV, the terms "sister station" used during local newscasts, and the stations sharing the same programs occasionally (especially special weather reports interrupting regular programming on two separate channels). They make the stations boring.

They make the stations boring.

Seriously?

I don't watch the local news, I read it online. I don't watch the cute weather babes, I stalk them on Facebook. I don't watch the morning shows, I listen to the radio. I don't really watch TV for any reason except for quality shows coming down the network. (take that back...MPD is pretty entertaining)

I've never thought: "Wow! That channel is exciting!".............instead I think: "Wow! That SHOW is exciting!"

It's very boring and bland indeed.

Which is exactly why these three stations combined. With competion from several hundred channel satellite or cable systems, small market local TV is in trouble. Last year Bahakel sold it's origional TV station in Greenwood, MS (WABG-TV) for 5 million which wouldn't cover the replacement cost of the transmitter and 2000 ft tower. Smaller market stations, many times, don't have the resources to compete in the one area they provide unique content, local news. You may not like that one company owns multiple local stations but it may be the only way they can survive.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the irony of Bahakel buying back the station (channel 32, WKAB) it kicked to the curb back in the 80s when it put WAKA on the air and stole the CBS affil from WCOV.

They not actually buying WNCF (in the legal sense), but merging/overtaking its operations.

I'm not sure of the current rules, but the ones in effect are probably what's dictating Bahakel's purchase of WBMM/CW22 over WNCF.

Could there be a "failing station waiver" in the near future for a Montgomery TV station?

Don't bet any money on something I typed.
