Thrift Shop on Alternative Radio

hearing it on many alternative stations, great song, just doesn't sound like a song that would cross over but it has big time.
Is WRDA playing it yet? Macklemore like it.

Macklemore/Ryan Lewis is actually an alternative duo (similar to how Gorillaz was a few years back). Their hit "Thrift Shop" crossed over to CHR because it gained in popularity so much. But, no. Radio 105.7 isn't playing it, and I don't think they will. The audience they're going for- northern suburban people, isn't exactly the audience you'd expect to be listening to Thrift Shop. As Atlantaboy has correctly alluded to, in the beginning, they're going the AC-leaning Alt route, which given location is a smart thing to do.

Thrift Shop started out on Alternative 5-6 months ago, and then crossed over to pop - if you're hearing it now it's a recurrent

Agree that it definitely would not be a good move for Radio 105.7 to add it

There's a thread in the Alternative forum about this. And, yes, it started out on Alternative a while back and I questioned whether it belonged. I don't think it ever belonged on Alternative.

I really think most Alternative stations have been somewhat desperate for high-testing currents - if there had been as many popular currents as there were a year ago, I don't think most stations would've touched Macklemore

105.7 doesn't have to worry about that yet, though, cause they can play songs that a year old (or more) and they sound like currents in Atlanta, since most of those songs haven't ever been played on a full FM signal

That was also true of X98.5 in Greenville when this song came out. They played the song a few times -- got a little backlash -- and stopped playing it. But they were in the same situation as 105.7 where most of the currents in their playlist (save a few active rock crossovers) were completely new to the area. So they had the luxury of avoiding songs like "Thriftshop" because they had plenty of material that was "new" -- at least to the area.

I bet 99X would have played it!!

Which is why they're no longer on the air...

Lmfao....Whomp whomp....99X played some urban music and I think its awesome that one song can crossover so many genres.

Whomp Whomp okay then let's hear some Mumford & Sons on V103!! = awesome!! whomp whomp

I know you were just joking as far as it being on V103, but it has been interesting watching Mumford & Sons. Probably the first band ever to cross from Alternative to CHR to Country. Even with all the"alt country" bands like Son Volt and Wilco, don't think there's been one that crossed all the way to mainstream country. But I do feel like Mumford & Sons was/is a band that belonged on Alternative to start with. It's another one of those instances where I don't think it was mainstream enough that "I Will Wait" would have been picked up by CHR or Country stations immediately.

Thrift Shop is a different breed entirely. Like I've mentioned before, aside from being a parody, it does have a more urban sound than most Alternative stations would normally play.

It is interesting how this song has crossed over. Considering V-103 toyed with spinning it back in February, but dropped it after 2 weeks of marginal spins in the late night. Now it's getting the full treatment.
